Well we had a great day! But came home empty handed. We saw 25+ elk including to bulls with last year's head gear. One had onlt one side the other had both. We saw 7-8 deer and 2 bears. One little guy in the morning and a good one in the afternoon. We spooted him from way up a hill and went down to put on a stalk. As we were looking for him where he was last seen I spotted him on the other side of the old road he was feeding on. We got down into a ditch to see what he would do next. He was coming towards us so I set up for him to pass by. Half way to us he stopped to eat some grass...broadside. We ranged him and it showed 67 yrds. I got up out of the ditch and ranged him again as it seemed a lot closer than that. We must have hit something behind him when we lasered him the first time as he was only 45 yrds away. As I got ready to draw he turned to face us. Now I'm out in the open. He looked for a bit and then raised his nose for a sniff...nothing wind was in our favour. Still staring at me he was moving his head sideways to get a better look....GONE! down over the bank in a heartbeat. I went up to where he went over and he was there on a log. No Shot. I watched for a while waiting to see if he would turn. Nope He buggered off. A great chance but not to be that day. I thought in hind sight that I should have been more patient and waited for him to pass by. But in retrospect just as he buugered off the last time a pick up lumbered up this road. He would have been scared off. It was also really close to last light. I will definitley be headed out again.
I would wait a couple of weeks as most of the hills are socked in with Snow..2feet. We got snowed on and rained on most of the day. I had a great time hunting with 444 marlin as well.
