I'm planning to do some back packing with my son this fall and I'm trying to come up with a method of hanging our rifles from our packs. Something that I can loop the sling over that leaves the rifle readily accessible for when the need arises. Does anyone know of either a commercially made or home made method they would like to pass on?

This might help you out ,I put a 1/2 copper pip with a copper tee and a 90 with 2 inch long pieces of pip on the 90 and tee. I used the top pack hole tube with the copper tube inside to hold the copper tube ,I then used the top pin in the back pack frame for my height I need drilled a hole trough the copper tube for the height I need it to be ,It worked great for me last year when I was bow hunting.http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/100_0854.JPG (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=5200&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=941)

Looks like H47 has a picture of Newhunterette in his garage! Does his wife know that?

What kind of pack do you have gone hunting? I use the Cabela's gun hanger set on my Freighter pack and it works like a hot damn for about $14.

external frame pack, drill a hole in side at the top for a hook, hang rifle by the sling on the hook. take a pouch like an ammo bag or similar, put the butt of the rifle in it and attach it to the bottom of the pack or the belt. or you can use a velcro strap at the bottom to keep it butt from swinging.

Exactly! This setup can be bought for some pacs, but it is sooo simple to setup yourself.

I just read some revues on cabela's rifle hanger. Some guys say your rifle is readily available, just lift and it's in your hands, ready to go. Others say you have to take off your pack to get at your rifle. It looks like it could be improved by taking a hacksaw to the last part of the hook.

I've played with a few rifle holstering systems and they all sucked... I just use the side straps on my pack and cinch it down tight... You have to take the pack off to get at it but it works.

I use a Boonie Packer sling (the one that goes over you neck, and hods your rifle horizontally in front of you), it works good with a pack but it might not work for everyone. I have read a lot of glowing reviews about the Kifaru Gunbearer from guys that seem like they know their stuff, but I haven't seen one in action.

Hey 1947, I like the look of that. Only problem is that I like the top bar on my freighter, for tying stuff like caribou quarters. That looks perfect for being able to get at your rifle when needed.

You can still tie the rope around just below the tee ,thats what I do http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif .

The Trapper Nelson board (if you can still find one) has the perfect setup, as it's vertical frames have 3 inches of wood to hang your sling on,on either side and allow you to access your gun without untying anything.

My friend uses a Kifaru as well and he likes it, but balance/weight-bearing seems to favour the Eberlestock. Besides, it gives you an excuse to buy a new toy

At $2xx directly ordered from Glen Eberle, it is truly a quality pack. I endorse it to no end.

I second the BooniePacker Sling. It works slick. Easy access to the rifle and doesn't get in the way of the backpack.

I've got two of them. I used to do that very thing with them

Here's what I do with my freighter pack:
Take a 6 inch long bolt and use baling wire to wire (open thread end up) it on the side you want to hang your rifle on. Make sure that it is the same thread as your spotting scope base or camera base. Then wrap it with duct tape(cammo of course) leaving the desired amount exposed. Then take a wing nut and thread it upside down to the bottom. The wing nut will be used to tighten your spotting scope base to the bolt when you need a quick and easy spotting scope mount or stand for you camera without packing one more thing. CHEERS!!

x3, easy and comfortable. I bought one for my dad after spending a week watching him suffer with a conventional strap on a moose trip. I should underline suffer, there was a ton of hiking.

Anybody in Canada sell Eberlestock backpacks? Wholesale sports? They sound like the way to go for the price range.

You can buy it straight from their website, http://www.eberlestock.com/

IIRC it was shipped to me in about 1 week, shipping charges were very reasonable, and you don't have to leave the comfort of your own home

Just picked up one of these on Wednesday, only tested it around the house but it seems to work as advertised, going to field test it on monday. I like that I can wear it with or without a pack or riding a bike...

I just picked up a Badlands Superday Ltd edition that has a nice rifle holding feature (same as any other BL Superday). A butt pouch hides in a bottom zipper, you can take it out, drop in the butt of the rifle and secure rifle with two straps on the back of the pack.

here it is with my 700 Ti

I have the Kifaru gunbearer. I wanted it because I can shoulder my gun in a split second, just pull the release strap and up she goes. Wish I had ordered 2 to give to a hunting partner. Some may find it a little bothersome with the gun hanging out in the right corner of your eye sight. I see they raised the price from last year. They gave a big discount on 2.
