Got my first bear today, was a great day. DeiselDog and I starting scouting around 11am on the west side of harrison. Ended up going about 36km in. Didnt see too much in the way of trace until the end, where I found my bear. Came around the corner and he was right there. He went down over the edge of a ravine and then popped up just long enough for me to get a shot off, dropped him in one shot. He rolled down the hill about 30ft and thats where we found him. I believe he is an average size, he looked freakin huge through the scope. Older bear I think from the size of his claws and the discoloration of his teeth. I am having the hide made into a rug and the meat into pepporoni and corned roast. Can anyone recommend someone to do the pepporoni for me??? A huge thanks goes out to DeiselDog and his dog, "Deisel" (go figure), for not only taking me out there and teachin me a few things, but for helping me skin and clean him and for helping to pack him up that damn ravine he rolled down. Also it should be noted that deisel is a little sore and is having a well deserved sleep tonight after slipping and falling over a 15-20ft cliff while going down to the bear. He is a seasoned hunting dog and did great. I will try to post some pictures........ Managed to post one, dont know how to make it bigger or post more..... Have a couple really good shots of deiseldog's dodge 3500 up to the side mirrors in snow though, you woul have to see to believe....

Sweet hunt! It is so much more than just the shooting that good stories are made of. Congratulations. As far as meat goes, Lapadat and I have been using Weymouth Meats in Matsqui for all our game (moose, deer bear, duck/goose). We have been happy with everything but the duck/goose sausage. The deer and moose sausage (double smoked ukranian) is killer, and the bear salami he did a couple years ago was better than any from a deli I have eaten.

Well done sir! Let us know how it tastes!

We was up at West Harrison yesterday as well. My friend had first dibs since he hadn't popped his big game cherry yet. We spotted a smallish blackie right smack in the middle of the road, and he hesitated (thinking it was too small?); I told him to just shoot the damn thing. By the time he got out of the truck the bear was long gone... and we didn't see another for the rest of the day...

Going out again soon to remedy this situation.

Just curious Mr. Dean and could be a stupid question but why do you want to know what color the bears fat was?

What colour was his fat?

I'm asking all that harvest one. I'm trying to establish a connection b'tween fat colour and table fare.

The next question is goin to be "How'd it taste"?

srupp

White fat tastes less "gamey"...however as much fat as possible should be removed..my experience..

Hey all, thanks for the replies. DeiselDog is laughing at me as I am already asking when we are goin out next..... The fat is white, will let you know how it tastes. Deiseldog is going to make the corned roasts for me and I am going to find somewhere to get the remainder done into pepporoni or simliar. Stroh - the saw cut my ring finger, the opposite side from my trigger finger, does that tell you something, its all in priorities :) The pelt is going to a taxi to be made into a rug...

Ya did a hell of a job on your first bear. It was a pleasure taking you bear hunting. As for Diesel the dog, he is not to well after that tumble off the cliff. He won't eat or come out of his house, so its off to the doc's tomorrow morning if he is no better. Try and post a couple more of the pics. Congrads on a fine bear.

Good job, for the pepperoni you can take the meat to Davies. If you want to bring the bear to one place to get butchered and then sausage made out of it, bring it to sumas meats, they are both in the phone book

Great job on your first bear. Sounds like Diesel got a well deserved rest. Really had to work for it, but it will be memorable for you.

there will be snow, but the road is clear all the way up to Pemberton if you want to make the drive ;)

Sections of the road are bumpy but overall a good pace can be kept with ease. The trick is to air down your tires. I am amazed by the number of people beating on their trucks with 50psi in the tires. Deflate your tires people, not only will your tires be less susceptible to cuts, it will make your ride MUCH softer and your suspension will last longer.

If you don't have on board air, the drive back to the gas station is not that far to air up....15km or so.

Upload your pictures into the gallery above or an online photo storage site like "photobucket" etc. Thumbnails are limiting as you can see.

If you need help posting fire them to steeleco@telus.net and I'll do some for you.

DD hope the pups is back on his feet soon.

Ain't nothing wrong with making ordinary stew cuts, roasts and ground burger out of bear meat too.

It's made to be married with garlic and onion and used in spaghetti sauce!
