View Full Version : Anyone Else Get "That" Feeling??
Stone Sheep Steve

Is it only "freaky" me but does anyone else get a weird feeling from looking at "some" high country pictures?? It's hard to explain but I'd describe it as something similar to "butterflies" or an "ache" . I don't get it from every high country picture but looking at that one of BHB packing out his caribou sure set this feeling off. I had an immediate urge to head back there and feel the cool air in my lungs and fresh air in my nostrils 8). I also get it from looking at other people's pictures but not all high country pics.
So am I "freak" :-?or are there others out there that get the same rush??

You're not the only 'freak'. You can include me!!
The only problem is, I have those pangs year around. I just want to be up there on a high ridge laying down and glassing.
I hear you both. Even just driving and seeing it off in the distance makes me wanna head up.

So are you a Big Mountain freak, a Mountain Hunting freak, a Hunting freak (or do you just like BHB ?)
I think I am a Big Mountain freak. Summer time laying around glassing sheep, goats, marmots, eagles (cool when you are above them!), lots of vertical.........
Winter sledding up to a peak, wondering where the edge is under the snow, seeing the smoke from a stack 30 miles away, brilliant blue that will burn your eyeballs with out shades, distant peaks always look more defined with snow on them (and infinite)
Best of all is realizing it is all downhill from here....

You're not alone, I call it a longing! I am itching to get out of this city and breath the fresh air of nature. There's no place like the wild, whether it's the high country or the low, it's better than where I am now!

Thank God no-one has used the term Brokeback Mt yet. ;)
SSS, BCRams, et al.... I get the same feelings. Kinda like a mini anxiety attack but in a good way. Its adrenalin. Some pictures just take me back to those moments I loved so much, and gives me the itch to get out there again. You guys captured a bunch of it...the clean moist air in your lungs, the feeling of your legs pumped up from a long climb, the smell of the red mountain heather and lichen on that ridge where you are laying glassing, the sound of the Whisperlite stove as it boils water for your freeze dried meal that only tastes good in that situation, the feeling of your boots crunching the gravel under the weight of you and that sheep on your back..... Heck, I even miss the mornings where you wake up and your tent is pressing on your face because it snowed a foot overnight. :D
If I get a chance, I'll share some of my pics too. Just gotta get a new scanner....

No ,your not the only one out there. I get that feeling every year when I am on top of a mountain looking down . One year there was a fog blanket below me ,I was sitting down having lunch . I said to myself I wonder if I could walk out onto the fog blanket ,it looked to me like I could . It was a weird feeling to me ,mind played games sometimes when your hi up into GODS country. Maybe it was the lack of oxygen that triggered that feeling.

Here's a picture of a nice bull moose above timberline - We passed on him - about 8 points a side and 48" wide- two cows just out of sight as well as a mountain goat just up the slope.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u260/tvaida/TimberlineBull.jpg
Now we're looking over 5 Stone rams about 200 yards out. the biggest was about 39", only 7 years old, and the horns just about reached the top of the nose, but did not go over. Damn he was a fine looking ram and bigger than the one I got later.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u260/tvaida/Glassing5Rams.jpg
After we spooked the 5 rams I took this picture as they were going up and over the ridge to the right. They can climb a heck of a lot faster than a 50 year old!.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u260/tvaida/Overthemountain.jpg
this one was taken as we glassed the moose, the goat and a caribou. I finally got my sheep on that backside of that mountain in the distance. Of course it was just below the summit mid way along the mountain.

Porcupine- I believe it was another one of your photos that elicited "those" feelings in me(or maybe it wasn't yours?). It was a pic of a sheep loaded up on a horse looking up another valley. I can't explain why some pics do this too me and other one don't. Some pictures just make you feel like your standing there on the mtn while others are "just" pictures of beautiful country. Not 100% sure though??
Keep them coming!

You'd think so. :D
One night...actually the first of a two week solo trip, just me and the dog...I was camped in a high pass and a thunder/lightning storm rolled in at about midnight. The winds were strong enough that it wanted to blow my little 2-man tent over, so I had to hold on to the poles with my hands and feet. Meanwhile, lightning was going off all around me and I was getting just a little nervous holding on to those aluminum poles! The storm last 4 full hours, and the whole time my dog (who is bombproof) just snored away....
He didn't seem to get too wound up about bears either, so I was pretty much on my own with them too. :)
Great dog otherwise. LOL
Cheers

:smile:Being in the mountains must appeal to every normal male. Its untouched quite and always thowing something new at you. Bring on the the rosie cheeks, sniffeling nose and that breeze which feels us with drive.
Long live the mountains and those creatures that call it home, or unless their caught between the cross hairs.
Weird or not its a awesome place.

SSS
I enjoy that feeling every day of the year. archery allows me to bowhunt all during the "open" season (including GOS) and target/3D archery allows me to enjoy that feeling all during the "off" season.
There ain't nothin' quite like it...

Quick enough for what I was about to cross. what you dont see is the huge crag/shoot infront of me, and there was no way I was gonna try crossing with my hands loaded!
Besides, I never feel so pressured that I have to harvest game, take I it for the enjoyment as much as the harvest. Had I not been able to shoot a legal ram that popped up on me I would not have been disapointed, more in awe of how quick things happen. I always find it just as exciting to be "busted" as it is to do the "busting" ;)

Not sure what you mean by that, but after looking at the other pics its pretty easy to tell . Nice country up there eh? Have you gone right up the Hess to Misty yet? If you head to the far end of the lake and follow the main creek that flows into the lake you should find a pretty wicked moose shed right on the trail. I wanted to pack it out with me but my fingers were frozen and there was a foot of snow on the ground....And i just wanted to get to camp and warm up!

I tell you what, there is no other feeling like being up in the alpine with no one else around, just mountains and animals. You feel really insignificant up there and realize how little room for injury/error you have up there if things go sideways but the vast open area and fresh are are overwhelming.

You're not the only 'freak'. You can include me!!
The only problem is, I have those pangs year around. I just want to be up there on a high ridge laying down and glassing.
Yes me to,everytime I see high mountain pictures or beautiful alpine basin pictures I just start dreaming about sitting having a coffee glassing Mule Deer as the sun comes up.........something about the peacefulness of it ! Whenever my older brother and I get together thats all we talk about this basin or that one hunting in the alpine !

When your up there your mind and body are almost absorbed by the landscape...and the more often you experience it the greater the pangs when you are back dealing with the 'day to day' career...finances...responsibilities. Things are simple up there....Simple in that your purpose and your choices....and the consequences....are always crystal clear. Its a high that can not be beat!

Well, not as breathtaking as the pictures posted in this thread, here are a few from a goat hunt my wife and I went on. She wants to tag a goat and although we didn't tag one on this trip we sure had a blast and did see a few goats. Our pup was just 4 months old at the time and has since accompanied us on many great hikes and now carries his own pack :-)

Some spectacular photos in this thread, you guys are lucky to have such beautiful hunting grounds at your door step. I'm in the process of organising a goat hunt in BC this year & I must say, the size of the mountains sure dwarf our highest peaks here in Australia. I'm looking forward to seeing this spectacular place in person, it looks like I'll have to step it up a notch with my training :-)

Not quite the calibre of mountain I'd expect to encounter in BC though some nice country our deer inhabit here in Australia & as close as it gets for us here when it comes to getting 'that feeling'. This is a late Summer shot though these mountains are covered in snow come winter. Altitude is around 6500 -7300ft.

Time for a bump. I really missed chasing sheep this year and am aching for the alpine. Lots of new guys on here in the last year plus. Get posting!

SSS
I get these pangs whenever I see something beautiful, whether it's the sunrise, an animal, pictures of the alpine, art or a person...Beauty pains...so beautiful it "hurts"...

When me and my buddy were out goat hunting he asked me
"do you know why I love coming up into the mountains?"
I answered "why"
he said "imagine all the people that will never get to see country like this in real life"
just hunt
