Yup, roasted marmots with an appetizer of spotted owl is a good feed. A little poached:wink: salmon is good too.

Just kidding.

I found a great place in Kamloops, on a rock pile in the south east corner of the Costco parking lot, if you are quiet you can sit there all day on the steps of a motorhome and shoot away all you want, but it better be not any bigger than 35mm or a quiet didgital, the noise of it clicking will scare them away.

Yah, and with only 47 of them it's a real challenging hunt!

That's for sure. Good thing this is Canada too, some other places they would already have tracked down the senders and checked the freezers. LOL.

I dono here in BC, but back in my youth in Switzerland we use to shot them up until the barrels of the .22 were red hot. Come to think of it, farmers would pay kids to shot the darn critters that turned fields and pastures into moon landscapes.

Just FYI if anyone's interested to know - down south in hillbilly country they are considered a staple food item, but here's an interesting item - the hide is tanned and made into a fine grained leather for banjos. "Deliverance".

I believe that all marmots on the island no mater were they are it is illegal to hunt them on the island. Hear on the island they are an endangered species.

We use to shoot them on the mt back of salmon arm . They lay on top of boulders sunning thenselfs . With a 220 swift or the 06. if you hit the rock rite under them it would blow then straight up sometimes 20 feet. We called it pancaking marmots .There is a lot of them around here if you want to shoot some just ask a rancher that has pasture land.

When I was hunt caribou in the Yukon the guide was hoping to find some marmots to shoot he said it was a delecacy and loved to eat it when he was a kid, unfortuantly or fortunatly we didn't find any marmots. On the other hand my daughter got a B&C Caribou

page 14 schedule B of your hunting synopsis lists all animals protected on crown land. i believe most of them are there because they are bear habitat (BEAR FOOD)

The Yellow Bellied marmots at 100 Mile House's "Marmot Ridge" golf course were out of control a few years back. If I recall, the owners at the time were kind enough to allow a local archery club early morning access to help out. ;-)

It was going well until too many anti hunting types found out and started squawking, then the owners decided to trap and release. I had heard at one point there were 40+ "relocated". Within a short time the population was back up. Not sure if a "cull" has been tried again or not.

Is there not a difference between a marmot and a ground squirrel? Either me, or all of you, are confused.

Tanya, I like the pic of the Hoary marmot.
They are a cool animal, but I see fewer every year. Might have something to do with all the grizz that share the sub-alpine habitat with them.
