View Full Version : Goat success?

With the goat season closed for a week now I have been hoping to see some goat success pics make their way to the forefront. I haven't seen any yet...with all these other pics being posted I'd love to see some of the goats that have been taken...either this year or in the past. Let's see 'em!

Last year I finally had success on my first goat. I think it was my 7th draw in 15 years. Only had the oportunity to harvest once before, but it was a steep angle shot and my footing wasn't firm, so I missed. I figured this year I better just break the 'no goat' curse and get er done. When I spotted this goat at over 1000m, I knew he wasn't a monster by any means but I was hunting solo and figured if I could get in close I would take him. The stalk was pretty much picture perfect and I ended up killing him under 50m. He certainly was awesome tablefare.

Will try to dig some up from the past, probably not til Monday though...Be patient...

No big billies. Always targetted Dry Nannies, just as pretty as billies when made into rugs, better eating and a lot lower on the mountain.....

Someday I may go for a big billy in late season...or maybe not...

Took this one with my bow. Tumbled and fell from the top of the mtn in the background, broke off both horns, busted up its face and body real bad, couldn't get at it till the day after so lost the meat unfortunately.

There are sure some nice Billies being posted here. Congrats to those that have bagged there quarry, that said, just a note to all that remember to always try to only shoot a Billy. Goats are very sensitive to harvest, the reason that it's any goat in the regs or LEH is because it is so hard to identify billy from nanny. That said, the biologists try to keep us happy by not making it all LEH which may come, if hunters continue to knock down nannies they will not only make the province all LEH but reduce the numbers to be sure to keep a healthy population.
Billies are usually by them selves, although they may be found with nannies and kids from time to time, especially during the rut. They are noticeably larger, some what cream to yellow looking, and are usually found in the ugliest part of the mountain. If you observe the animal with a spotting scope, billies will have a large scent gland behind the horns. I am only posting this to try to help others to ID a billy easier. The efforts a hunter has to put forward to harvesting a GOOD billy can be every bit as tough or tougher than a large Ram, I think they deserve the credibility and recognition given to Mountain sheep. Good luck every one. C/T

They told me 11.5 plus. They could count more rings if they looked closer. He had no front teeth left either, probably his last winter they figured if left alone.

A buddy of mine bagged his 1st billy, only 9" that was aged at 13 by the biologist, this old foggy only had three teeth left in his head. It's a wonder my buddy didn't just knock him over the head rather then shoot him. The biologist showed an area on the annuli where the growth was greatly slowed down from loss of teeth,(likely a fall he said ). Also that he likely would not have survived the next winter so He did him a favor. On the same trip I bagged my first bill, an 8 1/2 incher with 5 7/8 bases, aged 8. Cool back pack trip in the Rockie Mnt. trench, Robson in view.
Hunting billies is right on! well worth the effort!

Excellent advice Curly Top .If I can remember how to post my pic you will see that it is in fact a nanny .There were three visible goats on the hill this day and one was a kid with a nanny and then this was off by itself and higher on the mountain . I looked them over for a long time .I did not see it urinate but I was positive in my mind when I squeezed the trigger that it was a billy .Man ws I disappointed when I rolled her over .

You are entirely correct on what will happen if too many nannies are taken. As hunters we need to do our homework and make sure we only harvest billies .

To all who have posted pics .Nice billies Guys !

It's good to hear some details about the goats being posted. Size, age, score, etc.
Here's my first goat taken on Nov 8th 2003 (i think). 300 yard shot, 300wm, 180g FC. There was very little snow that year and BCbillies and I were able to hunt the alpine late in the fall and look down on these creatures. What a workout!! 9" right on the money. Aged at 5 1/2.

Nice goat TSW,
imagine the size that billy would have gotten too if he was 9" at 5 years. He'd have been a bruiser at 9 or 10.
What region were you hunting? with growth rate like that I'm guessing closer to the coast then more eastern part of the province.
Congrats!

Thanks curly top. Yeah, he would have been a nice one if he would have made it to 10 or 12 years old. There's good growth out here in region 6!

That hunt was a late season fall alpine hunt for around here. I have to mention some good shooting - both shots within an inch or two of each other! Good thing for the small brush as this thing one was about to go for a long ride. Going into this hunt we decided if the horn was 9" or better the plan was to have this first goat on the wall. I had to recalibrate my measuring tool (hand) after this trip as I estimated it at 8.5". Oops... at least we're still friends! Now I always bring out the tape. Looks like we have to keep on trying . This year our theme is 30/40/50 as TSW turns 30, I turn 40 and we want to go deep for a double header with both at 50"+. Better get at it and work off that excess you know what!

I seem a little technically challenged at the moment but will try to posts a few pics of recent hunts and a few older hunts once I dig through the album!

Here's one from fall of 2007. My partner (gerrygoat) was looking at ending a bit of a dry spell for goats and had a hankering for some meat and this young goat fit the bill. 2 1/2 year old billy, 8.5" horn - made for some good sausage. :-D

Here's a double header from late August of 2006. First goat hunt for my 17 year old nephew. Had 4 billies pinned at 40 yards (no cliffs) for over half an hour. Took the two 8 year olds and had one heck of trip out with all the meat, cape, gear not to mention darkness, fog and negotiating a knife ridge in the dark. Didn't and couldn't access the area via the cutblock in the background - was 25 km round trip. Nephew had to take the next year off to rethink this kind of hunting but called last week to say he is ready again!:-D His billy was 9 2/8" by 6 2/8" and scored 49 6/8. He was pretty happy with how it all turned out.

Here's a goat from mid August 2006. First mountain/goat hunt for this 17 year old (father and son from Alberta). Shot this goat at 250 yards just as we were nearing our camping spot (just before dark) at the end of a long day. He had just enough in him to get into position and pull the trigger before this bruiser made it into the cliffs. 12 1/2 year old billy, 10" by 6 2/8" - greened him at 52 2/8 but he wasn't officially measured until 7 months later and dropped to 50 4/8.

The goats in the fog is one of my favourite goat photos which was taken on this hunt. My friend Steve (the father of the 17 year old) took a nice billy (double header) within a couple of hundred yards of this spot 7 years to the day ealier.

Here's a goat from late November 2005. This single day late season hunt turned into a bit of a trek. Given TSW and I had good tags we knew the potential for great goats existed in the area. Longest one day goat hunt for us to date - 26 km round trip and 23 hours in total. Never made it to work the next day! Managed a 3 1/2 year old billy with 9 7/8" horn. All things considered it was a good trip, great partner and not a lot of takers for this kind of hunt!

Although a decent goat and by far the best goat hide we've had, we were somewhat disappointed in the outcome given the potential for billies in the area. What really ruined it was the hunt I was on just 8 days earlier. Thanks to the "Rabbi" goat hunting has never been the same! :-(

First post, long time lurker. Looking at all these sweet billies got me all worked up!

Here's a couple of pics of my Nov 05 Billy.
Spent the first day with TSW but couldn't find a Billy we thought was good enough (or could recover). Rut was in full swing and the billies were all black from kicking up dirt on themselves. ID'ing was easy - we were looking for black goats.

Went out with BCBILLIES a couple days later and found a decent billy and the stalk was on...
We were trying to get everything on video, but when I lined up on the goat my camera started saying "CONDENSATION ERROR" and would shut down!
Luckily because of this delay, the big boy came up from the gorge following a nannie and we both knew right away that was THE ONE!!

Shot was 150yards, but he tumbled into the gorge.Luckily we had 50 feet of rope and were able to lower ourselves down(you can see the rope in the background in one of the pics)
Heavy packs back home!
He was 13 years old and had no lower teeth left. He scored 53 4/8.

Now that a couple of years has past since this hunt we are ready to put in the effort it requires - some of us aren't getting any younger!

If you're from PG or the flatlands your welcome but with two stipulations - you must hike in and out of the spots blindfolded and carry no rifle! Heck I'll even supply the oysters as long as you don't mind if I spill a little juice on you. I'll make sure one of us has a grizz tag!

dschultz - better get the 138 litre Kifaru pack - you're going to need it! :p

Here's a September 1997 goat taken by gerrygoat. Not a bad first goat - 7 1/2 years old billy, 9 1/2" on the horn. Better than most "first" goats, at least mine! :) For a few years this hunt set the standard for gruelling one day goat hunts. Running out of water and 25 km of hiking through a lot of thick brush/stinging nettles seems to stick in my head.

At least we've learnt a few things over the years like deboning the meat, bucking the horns off, and saying goodbye to cotton! Would sure be nice to use a quad one day! 8)

That was a tough trip but I found the trip where you got your biggest one worse.

Here is the August '98 goat from the trip that just about did gerrygoat in (he hiked in and out in one day - I made it a two dayer)! Definitely the biggest bodied goat we've seen to date. Three of us had quite a time manouvering him around for the field photos! Oh ya... we don't have any field photos - enough said. Would honestly say this 10 1/2 year old billy was in the 325 to 350 lb range which is as big as them come! Perhaps this is hard to tell from the photo. Horns were 9 5/8" and carried their mass well and just squeeked into the book. Every trip we learn a thing or two - first and last time we will ever bring a dog on a goat hunt, bring extra film/camera (the nonhunter used all the film on scenery shots), last hunt using my plastic Koflach boots - no good for manouvering on rock/cliffs.

First goat taken with my 270 and first goat hunt for TSW and he almost convinced himself it was going to be his last! Heading down the creek in the dark one of us found ourselves upside down and tangled up in an old log jam. I just can't remember who it was! My memory seems to be failing somewhat as I get ever so close to 40. ;)

A lot of good memories come back on these hunts. Great times, great partners, great sausage and some nice goats - a few close calls but no regrets. If you've had enough of these goat photos just let me know.

It would pull out. Those are nannys, nursing animals sometimes look like that, I think it takes a lot out of them to produce the milk which could also factor in. Those billys got lots of time to clean up. This thread has brought back a lot of good memories. Hopefully a lot more to come.

Gerrygoat is correct. Typically those ratty looking hides are the nursing nannies. Funny thing is as best I can recall there were 3 or 4 single nannies on those outcrops and no kids. The other strange thing I recall is seeing a group of 25 nannies and young billies but no kids. I will have to check my photo arcives to confirm this. In general I have found the hides on a nanny (even dry ones) to lag behind those of the billies until you get later into the season (say October). I shot a nanny once on September 15th and the hide was similar to a billy taken in mid August. As a general rule, if you see a ratty hide during hunting season, pass on it as it's probably a nanny.

Mounts...mmmm...that's a good question. Had the mount (done by my uncle) shown in the photo below on my wall for 7-8 years but not actually mine. Was from a hunt with my buddy back in Oct 1998. First hunt for him and managed a decent 8 1/2 year old billy with horns at 9 3/8". A good size body on this goat. This goat has since left my wall and there is a strong desire to replace it.

After the 1998 billy (in which I eventually decided to not to mount) I had to make a decision on what calibre of goat I wanted. To be honest I have been on some dandy hunts a but haven't connected with what I am looking for. In 1999 I had the coveted tag and put in more days than I care to tell. After the 3rd attempt to the top of the mountain in mid February we got onto the two monsters we had spotted for weeks from the valley bottom. These two monarchs were in the same class as the billy taken by dschultz. If I had one regret in my years of goat hunting it would be that I didn't shoot. If I was placed in the same situation now it would be different but I lacked the experience then.:(

I know we all have different tastes but I am somewhat fond of the half mount billies, if done right! The head mount just doesn't seem do it enough justice.

You guys are taking some fantastic late season billies. The only areas I've hunted these gritters in is out of the question for late season, super steep with Avalanche shoots, playing with my maker is bad enough on firm ground never mind the snow and Ice, I do admire your efforts and you deserve such great Billies with your conditions. On another note, notice that the largest of the Bills throughout this thread are closer to the coast line or in the coastal mnts. then in the rockies where the growing seasons are shorter with harsher winters. We have taken bills in the rockies aged by biologists, only 3 teeth left in the mouth, 13 yrs old and only 9" horns, nice bills none the less but I think I want to try the Coastals more. Another note, the later the season the longer the hair and more silky, impressive they look. Good sausage too!
Good on ya guys.!!

Nice looking goat eastkoot!

culy top , you're right the coast has the right conditions to make em big, that goes for the bears also. A quick look through book will verify it.

While the dschultz hunt had some challenges this 1999 goat hunt rates #1 as far as scaring the crap out of me and my two partners. Late in the day we managed a double header taking two 5 1/2 year old billies - one at 9 4/8" and the other at 9 7/8". The second goat just squeezed into the book. Where the goats ended up wasn't too bad but to get back to base camp with these billies we had to climb up and out of the cliffs to get to the ridgeline. Not an easy task on brutally steep hardpacked shale and cliffs above and below. Almost lost our friend on his first ever goat hunt - not equipped with the proper footware! After this hunt I had to reflect upon how I go about introducing newcomers into the sport.

As an aside, as soon as the two billies dropped two more came out of the cliffs and my eyes opened like saucers. At least one of these two hawgs would have been in trouble if I had a tag. I did the "note to self" for next season, however, they were taken 3 weeks later by others. Scored 51 and 52! We let this area rest for 7 years and the three of us came back including my friend's son and got a dandy! This time we took the billy before he made it down into the cliffs.

Before I head out of town for a while here are a couple more goats. Both first time goats for these guys. First one is a 3 1/2 year old billy taken in early November of 97. 8 1/2" horn (other broke off) and the worst hide I've seen on a goat. Wasn't actually the billy we were after!

This goat taken in late November of 2002. 9 1/2 year old billy with 9 1/2" horns. The only bad tasting goat I've experienced and he stunk right from the get go! After he went down another billy came in and put a bit of a charge on us at 10 feet. First and only time that has happened! Unfortunately I lost the video from this hunt. Nice hide on this goat - he's on the wall.

I went with shoulder mount for a couple reasons...
First, I didn't think I could pack the whole hide out of the gorge without dying in the process, and secondly I don't have the room to give a full/half mount justice!

Get in good shape, practice shooting a lot because goats are really tough especially when poorly hit and can go into some nasty ground where you will never get to them. I personally don't like to shoot at long range because of the above reason, 250 or maybe 300 yards under ideal conditions is about as far as I like but others may disagree with that. Goats can usually be stalked to fairly close range anyway. We have walked away from a lot of goats because they were in really bad terrain and there was a good chance we wouldn't have recovered them. Either we are sure we can get to where they are standing or we are sure that they will fall of the cliff they are on so we can get to them. Make sure you have a good hunting partner that has the same drive that you do. Hunt where there are good numbers of goats.

I guided the one I posted. It was a late August billy (hence the short hair), 11years old, 9 6/8", don't know the score. One of the most interesting things about this goat was that he had no incisors, that is there was non present, they weren't worn off, they didn't exist. He was in great shape as you can see and had a good fat layer. I have never seen this before, anyone else have any experience with that??
We ran into this billy by himself under a small cliff. We were actually hunting sheep but it was too good to pass up and I thought it would lift the hunters spirits as we hadn't seen much for sheep up till then. He was bedded so we circled above onto a small knoll and the guy shot him at 80 yards down through the spine just after he got out of his bed.

Here's my best. 5yr old billy 9 5/8, decent mass taken in Nov a long time ago when frozen waterfalls and cliffs didn't scare me. Notice the tred mill. He's my motivation to get into shape before a hunt.

Here's a goat I guided in 2004 in some of the most beutiful country I have ever had the pleasure to hunt. Somewhere in the Gataga country. The billy was 12yrs old just shy of 10".

Here's a better picture of the unicorn billy. This was our buddy's (Krico's bro) first goat. He poped out onto a low face 299 yds from the bottom of the mountain where we were sitting in wait. Thanks to three lucky half naked pictures of Brittany Speers atached to our rifle stocks, he hammers him and down he comes. However he left one horn on the side of the mountain:shock: After scaling the cliff looking for it we gave up and went to find the billy, who slid all the way down to the bottem. Sweet. Now our bud who is a big strapping young man decides he wants a picture of his Goat draped over his shoulders:roll: connan the barbarian style. So he throws this thing over and the one remaining horn gorges him in the eyeball. So off to doctors office he go's to explain how a one horned goat managed to get the last laugh.

Pitbell - good to see some of those goats. That nanny looks better than any I've taken! You've got that photo mixed in with some billies - not fair! I think I'm out of billies to show with my nannies.:frown: Looks like I'll now have to find a scanner! The old horn in the eye story - can laugh now but ouch!!! Knew a guy that was inches away from having his goat drop right on him - young fellow who wasn't thinking about gravity!

The Nanny was my friends first goat. I promised him if he followed me to the top of the mountain I would get him a goat. We figured 4-5hrs. Well 9 hours of devils club and blueberry brush, and more than our fair share of curses and vows never to hunt goat again, we break into alpine. Lets just say that he was more than happy to take a old dry nanny. I didn't think he would ever put himself through that again. But after a couple of beers the other night it sounds like he wants to go round 2. It really is a sickness.
Here's a young Billy that taught me a valueble lesson in aging goats. Do not judge strickly by length of horn compaired to length of face:(

All right! I'm not one to back down and I've got nothing to hide. ;) It's not all about the horn! As much as I like horn the family appreciates a healthy supply of goat in the freezer. First one is a Sept 2001 Nanny, next is an Oct 1997 Nanny and the last one is my first goat taken in Nov 1996 - I look like a kid! As Seinfeld would say "I'M OUT"!

Thanks gg... I will be going with a guide. I've never been on a guided hunt before (never liked the idea of someone 'holding my hand' so to speak) though I really don't have many options when it comes to hunting BC. Either way I am excited about it, can't wait to see that landscape & those animals in person!

No Choppers aloud like your New Zealand neighbors here ..... you'll love it, the hard work is SOOOOO worth it on a good Billy.

Enjoy the Sausage too, they can make for the hunt of a lifetime, just BE SAFE !

Good luck when you get here. You going with a Guide?? If so, care to share, just wondering.

Good luck on your up coming hunt! We have a beautiful province....especially goat country!!

Alot of your hunt will depend on how well prepared you come physically. Train hard.... you'll be glad you did!

I've been walking our hills around home every second night with a full pack on (around 26kg) & doing about a 6km circuit, the other nights I'm doing boxing (good for cardio)or just getting out there hunting though a few mates of mine that have hunted goats in BC say it doesn't matter how hard you train here, you just can't prepare for it (especially the elevations) though you just have to make sure you are as fit as you can be... Never been afraid of a bit of hard work.. Looking straight down a vertical drop off the side of a cliff however... Well we'll have to see how that goes :-?

Out of curiosity, what sort of climbs in elevation should I expect to do on a goat hunt?! I do understand this could be a 'how long is a piece of string' question but more so wondering if the goats would likely be higher up the mountain in mid-late August as opposed mid-late November or doesn't it differ much?! It may help me better prepare for this trip if I can simulate a couple of good hikes closer to home here.

Very much determined on where in the Province you will be hunting, most likely 5000 to 9000 ft range. And typically earlier in the are they are higher rather then lower. You may be hunting some gentler terrain, or the most wicked dangerous terrain you can imagine. Nasty, dangerous but beautiful and also typically a good goat .... good billy will live in the ugliest part of the mountain ....... as said get ready to challenge yourself. I hold them in higher respect then our selection of Rams, they are tough to hunt period but my most rewardable, and have shot every type of game in BC. Good luck to you !

You are correct about it being a "how long is a piece of string" kind of question, but in August you can expect the goats to be higher on the mountain in general than they are in November when they begin to get pushed to lower elevations by the snow and ice. Early season and late season hunts both have their advantages and challenges. Summer usually has better weather, but the climbs are generally longer and much more devil's club to deal with. In winter the climbs are usually shorter but can be nasty dealing with snow and ice.

Thanks for the replies on this one, I thought it may have been a question with no real accurate answer though it gives me a slightly better idea on what to expect. We have a couple of good, steep, long day walks very close to home here (a 6000ft walk over a distance of 8km) so they will be a good start.

Hunting sambar deer in the high country here is much the same as the snow starts to fall & push the deer to lower grounds which I was thinking may be the same for the mountain goats though we will be there in mid-late August so I wouldn't expect that there would be much snow around then?!

Thanks again lads
