How long have you hunted moose and how many have you shot....?

My first moose was in 1974, I have taken roughly 20+ since, most in the GOS in region 7......

Been buying moose tags for about 16 years, probably shot about 10 -12 moose in that time, most in GOS or immy season, or mature. Only 1 on draw

Shot a few moose, only 1 immature, this year. 4 LEH's though, filled every LEH except the last one. I have been lucky in the moose draw dept. Not so lucky in the GOS. This year was the first. Been in on lots of moose kills though. Moosin

Tried Moose hunting in 1991.. 17 since then.. No immatures.. No cow/calf. Some really interesting hunts on really long journeys. Every one, except one, has been an equipment adventure.. funny now but not funny when you are 1500 kms from home.

Funny you should ask. I just found this old photo of my first moose shot in 1974. IIRC, he went 50". The location was at Mile 168 of the Alaska Highway and near where the Buckinghorse River joins the Sikanni River. I shot him with a .270 Win. Of course, I can't use that caliber these days because it's no longer powerful enough.:lol:

That's not me in the picture.

Had to get out the photo albums, hunted moose for 27 years, taken 21 moose with the rifle and 2 bulls with a bow.

Altogether with the ones I have been in on, calling for someone etc, there is 34 of which 2 were cows, 2 were calfs and 30 bulls. Only hunt moose now if LEH, love to hunt Muley's.

I lived in PG for a year once. I bought a calf moose tag and hunted about 3 times before I filled it. Very very tender and not too much flavor. Seemed a waste. Now (when I go again) I'll be looking for something with some taste to it.

Been hunting them 35+ years.....missed out one year after they started the LEH and couldn't find a spike fork...passed on all the moose the year I hunted elk on the Tuchodi..didn't need the meat.

1966 was my first .Since,I've been on many hunts with many different people but have lost count on how many I have shot.I don't think it really matters. It's the hunting that counts.Elk? now there it matters.

I've been moose chasing since 1981. Harvested around 20 moose give or take a few..Got my son hunting a few years ago when he was 11. Two years ago he got his own hunter number and drew a Moose LEH. He harvested a nice bull that first draw. He still grins when talking about it...My daughter is taking Core next month ,then she will be in on the moose action too..

One of my favorite animals to hunt!! The first moose I shot was a calf with my dad when I was a kid and I think I've shot 9 or so since. Three of the largest have been 44", 46" and my largest...."the muskwa boot" was 62 1/4" green (shrunk to 59ish I think)

First hunted moose in 1980.

Shot my first one, a calf, in 1981, in Chetwynd...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Staggerino/firstmoose.jpg

Shot a young bull in 1982, also near Chetwynd

Haven't shot one since!! 25 seasons without scratching that itch again. Mainly due to the fact that I haven't been able to buy or steal an LEH in close to 20 years....save for one in 1994, but I burnt my first elk tag that year before the moose season, so that was that...

Have passed on a couple dandy bulls while stone sheep hunting....they were safe from me...without horsepower I wasn't packing them out!!

Cheers,
4Ster

Been hunting moose since I was 10 years old with my Dad. Shot my first one at the top end of Nevis Creek where it drops down to the Besa. It was a spike bull and an incredible experience. My last one was a 53 inch bull up near Trutch. Love hunting up in that area. Have been skunked a number of times but always love the hunt.

Started hunting with my dad, added in a brother-in-law and now my son. We have had our fair share of hunts and success stories, from big bulls, cows, calf, spikes, and bullwinkle average. Had one of the last 3 LEH Cow tags for 5.3... and passed that year given we had two bulls already in camp. Hunting moose in the high alpine and back valley meadows are something to behold... We still haul by hand the old fashion way -- but might need to break down and invest in a quad as dad's a sprite 75 this year. We cover region 8, 5, 7, and 6 depending on the season and LEH lottery. I'm hoping to put my dad on this little fella as he has only had one big one in his 50 years of having fun in the BC outback.

I have shot upwards of 8 moose (last three with bow) myself and have guided 20 moose in four years of guiding. It is hard to beat moose hunting in the rut. Something every hunter should experience hearing a bull coming into a cow call. Wish you guys luck and success. If your looking for advice " Get out of your truck and off your quad and you'll see and hear much more"

And if that big bull is running on the tracks I find it hard to believe he'll be alive to hunt next year.

First two-point moose in '03 and have followed up with a bull every year except '07...I believe that makes 5. Helped out with 3 other kills over that time. Biggest for me was 44'' on an LEH. All in region 7A so far and have passed on some brutes in 7B because they were just to big for a back pack hunt!

Since we are counting. My first moose was when I was 16, way back in 69, on the Blackwater rd. Just got my drivers licence and had drove up from the coast. My Dad took the Cow and I got the Calf. Since then I have 36 down and been in on over 125+.

Holy, pretty impressive numbers there Stresd. Personally, I've drawn one LEH for 7-25...was never able to fill it. I guess the stars just didnt align. I've been out on a few other hunts, one kill. I was out with my dad in the 2003 season (again 7-25) when he missed a 300 yard standing shot at a monster. Must have been at least 50-55". I wouldn't hesitate to say maybe even larger. Sure makes for some awesome times.

Shot my first in 1979, near McKenzie, Blasted some in Reg 3 for a while, then got the Hwy bug up north and hammered several up there, back down to southern part of the province a few more, darn things are every where almost in BC. From swamp moose to high country all terrain moose. Turned down to many to count on pack trips for sheep and elk. Shot a few I wish I didn't, man they are BIG ! biggest is 2 bulls at 52 inches and every thing down to the Barley Bullwinkle in my gallery. Now thats the smallest legal bull I've ever harvested or seen for that matter... to funny, compared to how big they can get. Total 18 I figure, I'm due for the Hwy thing one of these years, man I miss that.

I have had the oportunity to hunt most of the big game in our province. The Moose holds a special spot, They are so huge and magestic, calling them in is such a rush they are not afraid of anything while in the rut. I was able to take my first Bull this year 49" with my bow, the range was less than eight yards, double lunged him and he traveled 120 yrds before tipping over. At one point I thought I was going to release at 5 feet and dive behind a tree trunk. Great read the stories, keep them coming,

Started moosin' in the early '70's. Shot 10 since then and been there for the work on 7 or 8 more. Hunted and scored in Fort St. James, Princeton, and quite afew years in the Chilcotin when it was GOS and antlerless. Biggest bull was near Nimpo as well as the youngest calf on the next years trip.

Shot my first moose in '81, and another in '82 and haven't shot one since. Have only drawn one moose tag since moving to the Koots in '88 (well, '91 if you exclude the university years) and burned it by shooting an elk instead...so haven't had much opportunity to moose hunt in 20 years. Did pass on a bull one time while stone sheep hunting that was 60" if he was an inch...got some good video of it though.

Have been thinking about moose hunting a fair bit lately though, might have to go up north for moose specifically.

Been hunting since 1979. Personally have taken around 20+ moose over that time. Get them just still hunting as well as calling.

Been charged by moose half a dozen times when in thick willows and bull grunting from their pissholes. They tend come to a screeching halt as they round the corner to take a look at you.

Our moose hunting group usually averages half a moose per person on our trips. Some occasional luckless hunts but not many. We don't try to take more than half a moose each unless there is someone with a big extended family that can use the meat.

Moose got to be one of the best animals to hunt with a couple go hunting partners,They are heavy and hard to transport (at least where we hunt) so once you get them back to camp you really feel like you have accomplished something.I still think skinning out a big bull around the fire, after a long day of quartering and transporting, while having a pull of the fireball is one of my best memories of hunting. It seems when we go elk hunting we do so much hiking and scouting by the time I get back to camp I am beat and ready for a meal and bed ,but moose hunting is a lot more relaxing for me anyways.

Lets me see I shot my first moose in the late eighties and have harvested maybe 20 or so. 5 have been LEH opening day, and all the rest have been GOS, only one immy in the bunch. I have been fortunate enough to be in on maybe 20 more. Lots of work but well worth the sweat when your eating roast in December.
