Mine is for Dease Lake, I will be in there the last week of the season for about ten days. I hope the snow is not going to be an issue, but I'll deal with it if it is...

Good hunting in the Valemount area. You didn't say what management unit, so being specific is hard. We often see them right along Hwy 5 in the spring south of town near the Albreda summit, and south to Blue River or along Hwy 16 north of Tete Jeune. If you can find them down near the highway, you know that they are back in the drainages as well.

PM me if you want more specific info such as ortho photo maps.

I have never hunted griz in 7-38, but from fall moose hunting, I know there is a big one that runs west of the Messilinka River between 20 & 30 km. His front paw tracks are nearly 10 inches wide in fresh snow. There are a couple of sows with cubs in that area as well most falls that I have hunted or worked in that area.

The mountains west of Chase Park are good too if you cross the river at 32 km. Terrain is flat from the river to Carina Lake, less than an hour walk along good trail and you might even catch a good bear down along the lake edge in the spring.

PM me if you want to know more.

Hey Bud!
Thanks for the info... the funny thing is that I've heard of this grizzly from a few other members. I want to go for that one! I am so pumped, I'll post pics and the story as soon as I come back! Happy hunting everyone, don't forget the pictures!

Snow won't be an issue in mid June. Finding a bear could be tricky.;-)

I will be flying in and hunting at about 5000 ft elevation on the plateau; that is why I am waiting for June.

I hope I can find a bear...

I didn't measure its pad width, because in the soft snow they didn't show well. But its front paws leave tracks about ten inches wide in the snow. Measured with a tape measure several years in a row, just because they are SO BIG.

We have seen its tracks going down the road after the first heavy snow every year that I have hunted moose in that area. I'm not the only one either, because there are other camps in the area and we always discuss that bear seeing that bears tracks when we talk to each other. Nobody that I have talked to has ever had it bother a camp, but nobody wants to follow its tracks into the alders when it gets off the road either.

Would you believe me if I told you that there are blue (glacier) phase black bears in that part of the country as well?

You don't have to believe me, but I know what I see.

Are you sure they are 10"? Alaskan Brownies leaving 10" tracks would cause quite a stir....An interior Grizz leaving a track like that would be.....well, unbelievable.

Not saying they aren't as I do not have first hand knowledge of said tracks, just seems to be a little on the large side. A 7" track is pretty impressive.

I got my third draw in a row. (and not the second choice, get it everytime draw either) i should start buying lotto tickets with this kind of a run!! my draw is in region 6 once again. i'm hoping to find a bear that leaves tracks like this!! (shells are from a 300wm) pic is from this fall's hunt. it's an eery feeling seeing decently fresh tracks like that and being surrounded by thick bush!

I got a draw for 7-02, heading up there this Thursday. Can't find much info on grizzly hunting in that region but I'm thinking anywhere around Kinabasket lake might be good- here's hoping. If anyone knows about the area please send me some tips ;)
