He is the King of Neon, my good friend Mr Hilbaloney.

That's his lucky cat huntin' coat, and always makes for interesting conversation while we're looking for lost dogs or stomping out tracks. You should see the rest of his wardrobe!

Orangethunder

In order to post them you need to upload them to photobucket or another hosting site and then post the link.

If that doesn't work you can email them to me if you want and I can throw a couple on for you.

Here is a Tom from a couple years ago...I knew about this Tom for at least 4 years prior to having a dog and did have a friend up with hounds one year to try on him but conditions and timing were not what was needed.
This cat crossed a road on rare intervals. Actually in November a deer hunter had followed his track a while and then left it only mere meters from his day bed in the birch..funny deal this Tom always took a real big shit prior to bedding...anyway a regular check of this crossing point had me finally finding him move on a snowy night. The track was covered in but because I had been by here the day before and knew his pattern I was fairly certain he would be close...the two dogs in the truck could sense the excitement and were an absolute pain to collar and get out on track my crossed up dog took off on the backtrack which is always a good sign for it means it is pretty fresh(least with her) the Walker dog of my friends was eager to go but I kept her leashed she was prone to trash on off game and ruin your day when Spinny got a good length down the track she was pulling hard on the lead...Libby the back tracker had turned it around I could hear her coming so I let spin loose...race was on.
Too pattern, the Tom had took his big shit...the dogs jumped him off of his day bed in exactly the same place he had used two months prior and the Walker dog must have got real excited for just before the jump she stopped to do the same . A stinking dog shit.LOL
They treed him in a big old birch tree. He is not the biggest Tom I have treed but definitely a very good day when things came together because I had learned something about him...this same Tom in November had caught and eaten the guts out of a mouse.....I had a history with him. This cougar had treed along a deer trail I have hunted for years..I had walked under this tree I has also road my horses under it.
One of the best day's ever spent in the mountains.

Nice cats boys! Cat hunting is a blast! The kill is usually a bit anti-climactic, but the chase and workin' with the dogs is good fun... I recommend you to try it, if you get a chance.

A bud of mine has hounds and is a mad-man when it comes to cats. I've been out with him on ~6 cats. I hope to get my Elkhound on one next year...

My hardest day in the mountains in my life was on this big Tom ~10 hours through nut deep snow. Finally caught up to him in one of his dens in the cliffs. All of the dogs were bleeding by the end... Here are some (steamy) pics - it was dark in the cave, except for the glowing green eyes and I never knew exactly what was in there until the flash went off...

wow. some beautiful cats there folks. i'd love to get in on a cat hunt someday. problem is, i don't own dogs let alone know how to run them , where to go or how the whole thing works. maybe in a few years i'll be able to book a guided cat hunt. i find the cougar to be the most beautiful animal out there. i only want to shoot one, ad have it mounted so i can look at it for a very long time. after that, i'll settle for pictures. i'd love to see any more pics you folks have, dead or alive cats. :)

Anyone that knows wild cats good and can give pictorial and or a small report on the cycle of the 12 months of the year in a cougars life for instance.
Something like what does an adult mountain lion do all year, where does it stray to and why, what elevation variance and does it follow the deer when deer migration happens in winter and spring.
It could help in the deer hunting part of it for deer hunter's other than cats.
Jel -- looking forward to a short essay or short story -- thanks hunter --

Jelvis knows his cat$.

He has been seen hunting the local "couger" population in town.

Be um young or be um old, Jelly loves his cat$ thats the fact.

Jel puts his nose to the ground, he runs fast he runs slow.

Chases them day chases them nite. Always on the prowl.

Look'n to bag a big fat one, doesn't have to be purddy, just has to be.

Thinning out the weak ones, making the herd strong.

Some day "I'll grow up" and be just about like you. Some day.

Jelly-cat you da man.

Whoaah!!!, thats a huge cat there Hillbilly.:-D. What did that big boy weigh??. By the way, Congrats again....

I don't know for sure as I brought him out hole just to weigh him and found my scale broken. My best guess would be around the 190 lb mark as he had hard slabs of fat inside and out plus a full belly of moose meat. Although he had the girth, he did not have the length to make the 200lb mark.

Quick question re: cat hunting (more specifically to those who post the pics of live cats in trees)...

Once you have the cougar treed then what? Are you shooting them or is it a "tree and release" kind of thing?

Just curious?

Most of the cats I tree are left to run another day this goes for bear as well. The hunt is in the chase not so much the kill.

Hey Doug
My cell went crazy once I turned it on this morning reaching Williams Lake.

That cat deserved the quick death it got and the full mount it's going to get.

I will get the story out once I come back to earth and unpack.

Mean while, for those whiners about the cost of a cat hunt keep on dreaming.
Its not about parting with the $ but as I said a year ago after a disappionted cat hunt...I looked at it as paying my dues and always looked to learn and improve.

It wasn't if my guide was good enough to do his job but if I was ready, experienced, trained hard enough to have the form and head space to deserve to take a cat.

This was more than just your average cat hunt...from damaging a new bow 6wks before the hunt, getting told I might be flying back to Egypt for work while enroute to your place and my favorite.....playing road racer on your skidoo and crashing hard enough to crack a top of the line Arai m/c helmet and ending up with a partial shoulder seperation.....Yep..my buddies wife next door is an RN and made the call.

For me...being involved with the great "team" we had and making that perfect shot on that cat with those dogs....I'd paid a damn site more.

Lets not forget those incredible creatures that make hunting cats cast possible not to mention Houndsmen like you Doug.

Never think I took it for granted you kept your dogs in there at such a intense encounter just after loosing Burger this month. What I saw was a proffessional at work ....always ready to pull out but educating the ranks and confirming the team Burger left behind still goes on.

I dedicate this cat to Burger and all your dogs...Tank included....I couldn't knock back that b/h fast enough as you saw....when I saw those dog engaging........"FIRE IN THE HOLE"

Will post the story ASAP.

OK, so here is a noob question for you all:

I know a lot of people use the fur from all of these cats as well as having them mounted. Does any body eat the meat? Just wondering if it is palatable, and if so, how does it taste? Is the meat usually eaten?

Marco is a good friend of mine..and was in Sugar Creek Taxidermy this past November while he had 6 or seven cougars out for Photographic work for his website..AWESOME..some of his cougars have glass eyes FILLED with fluid..now THAT makes the eyes come alive..

Marco makes all the fiberglass rocks and mounts...extreme attention to detail makes em come alive ..no wonder the gentlmen wins so many "masters" at taxidermy work..

exellent choice to send it to Marco in Red Deer Alberta..and you got an amazing mountain lion and a amazing trophy mount to remember the hunt by..

congradulations..

I was at SCI last weekend, and got to see a bunch of Phil Soucy's work. Its pretty impressive! The pictures I took do not do them justice (the flash emphasizes the yellow of the eyes too much, etc), but I thought I'd share a few anyway. I am not a big fan of open mouth/snarling cat mounts, but I really like this guys...he's got it down pat.

Its done...shoot me your e-mail and I'll send you some pics. BTW, where's that barney pack so I can check it out? ;)

I agree with you that the Soucy faces do look a lot alike. When they are all near each other like that its really easy to spot. Presumably by the time its in your house though you'd never notice, and neither would anyone else. :)

Its sitting in the basement, in all honesty I took it out of the box and it set there for a month, I then tried it on for 30 seconds and thats it.
Will be waiting till this fall or maybe this spring.

Great cat Doug..again... congradulations to John on his fine trophy mountain lion...

Jelvis..I have seen Dougs photos from many many past hunts HE IS THE MAN on cougars..his knowlege and experience is second to none..

And yes you are also correct about his 4 legged partners..Zoey, Tank, Cookie,Rudy, Buffy.....all athletes that Doug spends countless hours training and keeping in shape...an incredible amount of time to keep the dogs "up to speed"......

And sometimes the cost is incredibly high...RIP Burger...

I have not had much experience with cats however Doug is a very good teacher..and he has a easy way of passing on his knowlege without being a 'know it all or making those asking the questions feel silly"

I appreciate the fact that Doug DOES seek out the big old toms..and is not in a rush to just harvest any lion..old mature toms..

Thanks for the photo Chilcotin Hillbilly....well done...again

PS what the heck did I break on the sled??

WOW amazing detail!

Didnt say you shot them, I think somewhere on here you mentioned about people not having to be in the best shape to hunt cats for you guys got a rather large client on a cat, and then possibly one that didnt fall outa the tree right away after shooting which was probably mentioned else where.

I heard soucy was making a trip up from the states (if he already hasnt)
just figured you would be sending your guys there.

To me, your statement might lead some to believe I guide for myself, which i don't.
Muckle is my good friend.

I have helped an outfitter in the past and those cats may be what you are thinking of yes, as one of them was a very large man.
He recommends Phil Soucy as he is the best at cats (especially open mouth) in his opinion and based on the limited number of mounts from a wide variety of taxidermists I've seen, I agree.
Kodys is right up there as well.

I would think most people get their game mounted the way they last saw them.
At least thats what I prefer, if it doesnt need to be specifically posed to fit in with other mounts or a specific location in the house.
I imagine many are intrigued/fascinated by the pose because most people who arent fortunate enough to see many cats, are fascinated by that 'look' or maybe the most exciting part of the tree for them was when it did open its mouth and hissed in the tree, which some do.
I've never seen a newbie not get a rise from that.

As for that particular cat, it was mounted exactly the way it was when it was taken, bayed up, pissed off and in a moment of chaotic western frenzy.
Just no vet bills taped to the log

I guess if I were to mount mine, I would have to have him in an 8' wide old growth fir with old mans beard hanging around him while he slept.

i perfer the quiet relaxed look of a lion in the tree as well. as that is how most of them are viewed. although the one i shot a few years ago was in that exact pose just a few seconds before i shot him, bearly three feet off the ground. the only thing you could add to that mount to make it any more realistic would be to have the cat spittin'. lol you may see the open mouth snarl lots, but i have yet to see a more true to life mount. perfect!

Here is a cat shot over here in the west kootenay region. This story has been in the paper and on the radio...One of the hounds had it's head crushed inside the cougars mouth! Jay was able to mouth to mouth the dog and revive it from it's unconcious state...:-| They ended up getting this cat and were able to get the dog the medical attention needed! Nice 4-08 kitty!

Hey CH (or any of you hound guys),

As a complete "know nothing" about using hounds (other than what I've read on here). Why do the dogs have 3 collars? I have read many threads on here over the years about GPS tracking collars, but what is the need for 3 or do the others serve another purpose? I am guessing one is just a normal collar for leashing up the dog, one is GPS....and....?????

Great pics btw!

That cat was taken by whitecourt.
The hunter is from Nanaimo.

I got it a few days again shortly after it was killed in a 'chain email' and it was from Union bay on vancouver Island lol

Skinny tree. I imagine he wasn't happy to be up it.

Nice pics.

I dont post much on this site in way of cats/hounds but heres a skinny tree and the most angry, growly and full on hissing cat I've ever had who put on an unreal display in the tree.

He had every reason to be mad, he was an absolute MESS, completely missing several toes, claws, blind in one eye and ears split to the bases.
His face was tore to shreds and his sides were raked bad from another cat.
His back right foot was chewed badly and his toe bones were exposed.
THe dogs fought the cat at the base of this pecker pole and I'm fortunate he was even able to climb. I could see where he slid down a couple times, the gashes in the small tree were 8-10" long due to him missing a dew claw and index claw on one front foot and index claw on the other foot.
He was an ideal candidate to kill a few dogs but luck was on our side. (especially since this was the second tom of the day !)
Sorry for the poor quality pics, it was getting late and the focus was poor with the amount of branches, even though he was only 15' up.

Two miles of deep wet snow on the snowshoes and the hounds had this female treed. I just was getting within hearing rage and I cut a smoking hot wolf track crossing over the dog tracks. That got my heart racing as I dug deep to plow ahead and close the gap the dogs turned it up a notch, it sounded like a bayup on the ground even though the cat was treed sold. I snapped a couple photos and hiked out finding a fresh wolf kill of a doe 200yards up from the tree. I think a wolf or two came down to check out the dogs hense the action on the ground.
Enjoy the pictures.
