With all the debate and discussion about elk hunting that is going on. Does anybody know if the regs are going to change? I know there are proposals, but are any of them moving forward? Or is it still wait and see?

Nothing is for sure till its written in stone, but obviously the MOE is always looking at what will work and throwing out proposal's. Fisheries is the same, especiallyu this year, expect considerable change to sl;at water.

My understanding is that the proposal that was sent off this year does not have any proposed changes in the elk season in it at all. So no, nothing is going to change this coming year. It was put out for public input, and the die-hard 6-point fans did the best job of getting their constituency motivated enough to write in against the proposal.

The world is run by those that show up. :)

If the "6pt or better guys" are outnumbered 3 to 1, one would think that it wouldn't be that hard to rally a significant letter writing campaign to counter it.

6616 made some good points earlier about the composition (and bent) of most of the R&G clubs, but still, despite the fact we living in a democracy there has to be some credit given to those groups passionate about a topic to dedicate that kind of time and effort to something. If the meat hunters were as passionate about it, one would expect they'd be even better represented at the table.

Morale of story: if you feel strongly about something, make your opinion known to the people that make the decisions.

Hence a poll to show nearly 75% supporting the change to a 3pt elk season.

A small step to show those hunters in favour of a change that the numbers are strong, now what needs to be done is to throw the support behind it by communicating those views to the Regional Bio via letter writing.

My only advice (as one who solicits public opinion) is to make your poll as bomb-proof as possible, so its results are not easily refuted. As an example, I, and am I sure others, never bothered to vote in any of the polls, as my opinion wasn't represented by any of the available answers.

But, a good plan nonetheless.

Provided a position held by a majority can be accomodated by sound conservation practices, it is very difficult for the managers to not take steps to do so. Its a public resource afterall.

hold the phone BCrams, I like the direction you are working in, BUT you can't glean hard results out of an online poll like this!

A considerable percentage of hunters in this province wouldn't know what button to push to turn a computer on, nevermind use this website.

You do a province wide poll showing similar results and you have something to go on.

I knew you were going to do that

cheers!

Its not bomb proof and I will be the first to say it. That said, there is no denying the general direction / movement most hunters want to go. Even if you flipped the poll questions around and added a few - the general census will likely still point in the same direction !!

I believe things will be in the works to ensure we get the hunter demographic which do not show up on line or use a computer.

I still believe the direction isn't going to change at all! Even if we added a poll question that favours your answer SSSSter !! The movement will still move towards changes from the 6pt only season.

One thing I have noticed, the ones who voted no, have a shown to be very closed minded and the me me me me attitudes prevail. I am sure more than one avid member on here will be able to see that connection as well. Even for the out of region naysayers. Husky being one example.

BCram you said the pole supports 75% to have a 3 point season . Does this mean for the entire year ????. My vote would have been for a 3 point season or better for LEH for two weeks ,not an open season on them ,shorten the season two a 5 week season ,leaving the elk 6 point season in place ,have the season moved out of the rut. You all would be surprised on how the elk numbers would develop over the years by doing this. Rutting and shooting in my books don't work as good as for if you had the season opened after the rut ,or at the tail end of the rut. This way the bull will be able to pregnant all the cows that go into estrus and not be shot or interfered with when breeding.

3 extremely valid points.

I think a lot of it is a lack of education and understanding.

Democracy certainly has major flaws. Until somebody builds something better we're stuck with it.

Mark, it was a somewhat sarcastic attempt at humor and to feed the fears/rumors we've all hear about people impersonating dead relatives to inflate their chances of getting LEH endorsements as well as the idea that changing the 6 point rule would lead to slaughter.

I'm sorry if it didn't come off well, but I couldn't help myself after the long tedious posts, although many brought good points, the last few days about prospective changes to the 6 point elk rule. Consider this is a mis-guided attempt to bring off beat humor to the topic.
