I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how many Black Bear are shot and killed on average per year in BC because of NON-hunting related events, such as they were in a residential neighbourhood, at a school etc....a friend gave me a number when we were chatting and it seemed way off so I wanted to check.

Thanks

On average about approximately just under 400 a year are killed because of citizens complaints and other black bears kill and eat bear cubs and some sows, some years up to 750 are shot by ministry workers. Jelly old stats

Found this on an MoE website:

From 1992 to 1996, approximately 245 grizzlies and 4,246 black bears were shot in British Columbia because of perceived and actual threats to human safety.

And this from another:

The number of bears handled in control actions also increased. Public complaints resulted in an average of 995 black bears being destroyed and 214 black bears translocated annually. This reached a peak in 1998 when 1,728 bears were handled by Conservation Officers in control actions

I couldn't find anything more recent, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

Lots.... i know of dairy farmers and ranchers that practice the SSS on bears . I would think orchard owners a vineyards logging camps wilderness campgrounds . all do the same so probely a big no.

A couple years back.....over 30 Bears just from this area alone.
I'd bet whatever the posted numbers are....the real numbers are much higher.;-)

During really dry summers, the numbers used to be very high in the Okanagan(particularily in 1998 . That's one of the reasons they opened the season on Aug1(on private land) . That way orchard and vineyard land owners could take care of their own problems(or at least recruit some help to do so) and avoid CO intervention.

On this note, I think the bag limit for black bears should be increased. Most hunters dont' even hunt them, but those that do enjoy it.:-D

Thanks guys, I didn't post what I was told so as not to influenece the posts, I was told 900 per year on average in BC and 5 to 6 thousand accross Canada.

Not sure on the accross Canada part but the BC part I was given seems to be accurate. Thanks
