So I was wondering what combo you guys are using to put moose meat in the freezer and how your shooting results have been. For me its been my good old 7mm Weatherby mag loaded with 160 grain Nosler Partitions ,the last moose got it in the lungs at about 150 yards ,he walked about 20 feet and went down like a sack of potatos.I hear about guys using 243 ,25/06 and smaller calibres ,I would not hunt moose with these rifles because I believe you can not have to much rifle for moose but you can have two little.my 2 cents.

I have used a 30-06 with 165 grain Hornady SST and havn't had one go more than 5 yards. Lately I am using my 7mm mag in browning a-bolt with 162 gr hornady BTSP. Dropped my last one at a little over 300 yards with one shot through the lungs and heart. Now I have bought a thompson center pro-hunter .338 and am trying some different loads with 225 gr SST's. Seems to shoot good so far but haven't had a season to use it in yet. Maybe ill get a tag next year.

.300 win mag with 180 ballistic silvertips have worked well for me. I shot a big bull the other year at around twenty yards through the ribs then offside shoulder, bangflop. I recovered the bullet on the skin on the farside and it still weighed 147 grains. Not too bad for that distance. I have a .450 marlin that I wanna try really bad on a moose this year with 325 leverevolutions.

I have used the 308 Model 70 for 40 years--with 180 grain sabre tip or Super X. The moose don't walk away from a well-placed shot. I hear laughing out there so I confess to Bells and Noslers just for fun.

Currently use 300WSM 180gr TSX bullet for everything, but I'd liek to use my 375 Ruger and a 270gr TSX on a moose...

Well this past year we took out our moose with one shot from the 45/70 that was a kill shot just not ideal and then 2 lung shots with the 300wsm 180 tsx, it did the job but im thinkin this year its gunna have to be the 45/70 325 leverrevoulution's that ive now got shooting 1'' groups at 108yards.

300RUM spitting out 180gr Hornady Interbonds does the trick. Although dont think the moose like this combination too much.

Started huntin moose during the mid 80's with a Rem 760 in .270 back then factory loads. Didn't like the gun that much so, gave moved to a 7 mag, loading 150 gr. partitions with 4350 one grain over. flopped a few moose over with it. Then decided it was no fun, so hung it up and tried out musket loading, TC .58 cal. round ball over 120 gr. ffg, put my moose on the ground every year, until I moved away from Prince George. Now since the moose are not just out my back door any more, I have returned to the 7 mag. It has done itself justice. But by far my fave. is the musket.

Ive shot four moose.

7mm Rem Mag w/ 175 gr X bullet, approx 150 yards, lung shot he made it maybe 20 yards

7mm Rem Mag w/ 160 gr CT Partition Gold moly, around 75 yards, high shot into the spine on a trot, dropped him and put another into his chest for a finisher

416 Rem Mag w/ 350 gr Speer MagTip, @ 125 yards. quartering away through the lungs and breaking off-side shoulder. He wobbled 15 yards before toppling over

last one was with 30-06, 168 gr Barnes TSX, 250 yard high lung shot, dropped him in his tracks. a few kicks and he was stone dead.

Next one I shoot will probably be with a 338 Federal

Hmmm last 30 years...small calibers....and lost track of how many moose I have harvested or guided for..most of those years being the .270 with 150 grain pills...mostly nosler or other premium bullets.I have seen many calibers used on moose..2 years ago my 1600 pound moose I shot on the TESLIN river was the largest/heaviest moose I have shot..again with.270..it did fine..one shot anchored the behemoth and the second one put him down had i waited the first would have done the job as moose are BIG and have large chests that hold huge amounts of blood..it takes one minute and 29 seconds approx. for that chest to fill with blood and the moose tip over..

I am still waiting for that 60" bull... 58" is the largest I have harvested with lots of 55" racks..however while I am searching for a wall hanger we still harvest all the meat..and enjoy it all.

I am going for a .338 for moose and grizzly mostly because I need a grizzly rifle and i need to justify it on more than one game animal..so moose will suffer at its hands..

I will soon need some loads for the new .338...

I've killed 'em with:

308 Win with 180gr Core-Lokts
7mm Rem Mag with 175gr Core-Lokts
300 Win Mag with 180gr Core-Lokts

Next one I shoot will be with whichever of those guns I happen to be carrying that day.

However, dumbass 2 point moose rules and 35:1 LEH means I'll likely be using my HP Photosmart M425 camera for moose again this year, like this fine 3x4 taken in 2007 at 300 yards with a single shot through the Swarovski spotter. :???:

I'd go with shmaus, .300 win mag or WSM with a 180 grain nolser or barnes tripple shock. Thats if you dont have the balls to bow hunt them

That was my choice for 40years till just 2 months ago I got myself a 300 and will shot 180 noslers with it. Just needed a new rifle not caliber.

Sadly the only Moose I've shot I did so at 200 meters across a swamp...7mm-08 with a little itty bitty 129 grain hornady interlock

the last moose got it in the lungs at about 150 yards ,he walked about 20 feet and went down like a sack of potatos.
Punched the lungs and heart...same results except mine never took a step !
If it's good for a Deer it'll Kill a Bullwinkle just fine too;)

300 win mag, 180 grain federals. Switching to a 190 grain hornady this year, hand loads. Seen moose fall dead in thier tracks with a 303 brit., and 30-30. 30 06 is a good choice with 165-180 grainers. moosin

My last two(one moose, one elk) were taken with a 9.3X62 using 286 gr Nosler Partitions.

I use my 35 Whelen for moose with 225 or 250 gr bullets. I am always trying different bullets but use mostly RL 15 for all loads. Like the 9.3x62 mentioned above it kills well without making a big mess of the animal.

With that bullet all you'd need is to have it pass the moose within 10 ft and the concussion would knock it down! Holy crap that's a big bullet!

It sounds like almost any cartridge properly placed will work.

But for those times when that crunching in the bush turns into a bear and you have to do the leaving, wouldn't you feel better backing into the bush packing a gun that spits out a lot of energy?

How about if you get your animal, and you can't get it out right away? If I have to come back to an animal that has been unattended, I always want to have the shotguns loaded with slugs. I ain't hunting then and I just feel better about it.

The one time that I had a stand off with a sow griz and three cubs about who was going to get the moose carcass left me feeling a little "inadequate".

Just my 2 cents.

.338 win mag with 200gr, 210gr, 225gr, 230gr, 250gr, what ever I have loaded and sighted in for.
I have an uncle who uses 45/70 with 350gr hornadys ( I think ) and Yongfella is right pretty impressive knock downs.

Last two moose were both .270. The first with 150gr. Federal Classic and the last with 140gr. Accubond handloads. In both cases the moose walked about fifteen feet and lay down. Game over. Take your time and put the shot in the right place and there won't be any grief.
