Benny was 13 when he got his ram draw. It had to be 3/4 or better, and this one made the grade. Only ram we encountered on the hunt as well. Lucky kid, he had a LEH moose tag the year before and filled it too.

Some great pics in this thread!

Here are some of my personal favorites... Sorry if you've seen them before. They are old time cranker photos.

Three years chasing this specific ram with some funny mishaps along the way and with patience and Perseverence they finally connected after jumping him along with two other crankers in the buck brush.
http://www.bchuntingblog.com/mypics/sheep4.jpg

Hows this for symmetry... a perfect 44" on each side. On a hunt that was given to him by his boss. Not a bad gift!

http://www.bchuntingblog.com/mypics/bookram1.jpg

Two book rams at the same time... They spent 2 years in a row chasing these specific rams. They were in a group of 27 other rams when taken.

Happy Hunting!

Here's a map of the "secret spot".

http://www.bchuntingblog.com/mypics/secretbasin.jpg

The arrow points to some nice black shale cliffs with lots of lush green grass. I've been told big Rams like this stuff. It's also really F***ing steep so be careful . I still haven't managed to find one of the big ones yet but there is always next season and the next, and the next, and the next until one day physically I am unable or they go leh and I don't get drawn. Then I'll start a map business. ;)

"nice ram porcupine, was that a guided hunt, I thinck I recognize Doug From big 9 outfitters."

Yes, it was a guided hunt with Big Nine Outfitters. For my 50th, I bought myself a 10 day, one on one, hunt with them, where I could shoot all nine species that they have. I wanted a sheep the most and got it on the 9th day. They charged me less than a third of their going rate as a BC resident and got me the 2nd biggest ram of the 6 taken by then. I hunted Sept 1 to 10. Saw a MONSTER mulie that was easy book, but the season was closed on them. When we were changing locations after 4 days of hunting one spot, I shot this Elk for meat, but must admit it makes a nice European mount in my computer room.

Yeh porcupine , I have hunted Barry's area Quite a bit over the years, never with him but we always stop in at his lodge for a visit. Great people.
The elk you shot is a very good meat bull!!!!! gotta be getting close to 300? 280 for sure thanks for sharing

Just looked at the elk again I don't think 280 is high enough, points are all good length, gotta be closer to 300.

Sure love this pics from Kitimat Killer! Those of the Cali's are pretty nice two. I've applied for Cali LEH fro 25 years and never had a draw. It's only about 15 years of skunks on Rocky LEH

The elk green scored just over 320 and netted just over 310. After the 60 days it grossed 310 4/8 and netted 305 6/8

Took a buddy from Vancouver Island Sheep hunting in the Cassiars a couple years back! Went in the area not knowing what to expect! Well long story short we seen 39 stone rams in five days got two out of one band. Camped beside a father/son team from east kootenays and they also got two stone rams. Was a good area! Ramshot.

Me and my cousin were watching a band of rams all summer and figured we had a crack at them for opening day in September. Come opening day we were pretty pumped as we put to bed 12 rams and three were over the nose and exceptional rams! We got to our area opening morning and it was solid fog:icon_frow. We sat there for half the day and the fog finally lifted! We glassed for about twenty minutes and found the rams bedded in the timber! We threw our packs on and took off. When we got on the same level as the rams we split up and started still hunting! Lots of timber and small openings and all of a sudden I spotted rams. They were alert and moving out going up hill when I heard a shot! I chased them right to my cousin:smile:. He nailed this ram @ fifty yards as they singled filed by him with his sako 30-06. He said that it was the smallest out of the three over the nose rams as it was the first one he seen then the rest followed. Oh well, still was a nice sheep and a great hunt to share with my cousin!Ramshot. My pentax camera had a dead battery so unfortunatly no field photos.

Stone Sheep Steve
02-11-2008, 06:55 PM
Most guys have heard this story before:roll:.......but for those that haven't I cut and pasted it.....probably my most memorable hunting moment............so far;).

We packed in on July 28th and bumped into 4 rams just before we made it to our first camp spot. There were 2 legal sheep in the group with one decent ram along with one of those "non-typical" freaks with a big heavy banana one one side and the other horn flared right out almost growing back into his face. We were able to get a good look and video them at less than 100yds before the one good ram fed out and pinned us down. We froze but then a huge hail storm hit and soaked us so we had to stand up and get into our rain gear spooking the rams out of the country. We spent a couple of days in the front range but then packed further to another camp.
After 11 days of hard hunting we headed back towards our first camp. My partner was wiped and stayed in camp but after bailing out early last year I knew that there was no way in hell that I was giving up yet. I pounded the ridges peaking into adjacent basins only finding small rams for my efforts.
There was one last area that I had to look over in hopes of catching up to the ram from day one. So after the morning rains subsided I headed out solo on Aug 7th. I got two hours away from camp when I looked back to where I had just came down a large rock slide and soon spotted something dark. It turned out to be a grizzly that was following me. He was still 700yds behind me so I got out the video camera for a quick clip before I got ready for an encounter. I scurried up to a ridge top to have a good vantage spot. A rain storm quickly approached so I put on my rain gear and hunkered down. I wasn't moving from my perch no matter what.
The storm came and passed with no sign of the grizzly. He must have turned around and gone the other way. Fine by me!!!
I soon began to climb what my partner has deemed "The Tower"-a hunk of granite that is the highest point around. It is "almost" impossible to climb but there are two leg-burning routes to the top. I made it to the top without incident but quickly had to put my rain gear on again as another "skin-ripping" storm approached. I had no refuge to hide from the storm on top of this ridge so I just had to tough it out. Many times I thought "Just head back to camp" but I couldn't cave to the weather. Not this year...........
After the storm, the weather wasn't too bad so I snuck over the backside of the Tower onto a huge pinnacle that dropped straight down 500 verticle feet. When I got close to the edge I spotted two rams bedded 500 yds down to the left. Yes, I thought. My persistance paid off!! I got out the spotter only to discover that they were both small rams. Dejected, I put the spotting scope away and got up to leave. I was about to put on my pack when I figured I had better look closer. I walked out to the edge of the drop and leaned over as far as I dared. There tucked back against the edge of the granite I could see a larger ram bedded down!
I took off my rain gear and started looking for a route to get to a closer pinnacle above the rams. Many times I got to the edge only to discover I couldn't see them all the while trying not to knock rocks down. Finally, I picked the right hunk of grainte and spotted the rams(now feeding) directly below me. I got out the spotting scope and had to hang on to it tightly. There he was!!!! It was the ram from day one!! There was no question as he had a uniquely splintered left horn. It was a good thing I knew he was legal because from this angle there was no way I could tell for sure that he broke the bridge of his nose.
The range finder said 210 yards and almost all of it was verticle!!!!!
I slowly chambered a round and eased closed to the edge. I peeked at my barrell only to discover that it was not clear of the granite. I slowly eased closer hanging on tightly with my toes. It was close to 500 feet straight down!!!! . When the ram was quartering away I slowly sqeezed the trigger and the rams scattered at the shot. The big ram took off on 3 legs but soon stopped offering me his other shoulder. I squeezed off another round and he began to tumble down the steep hill eventually stopping in a clump of buck brush!!!!!! Yes!!!
I backtracked to retrieve my pack but soon discovered that every chute I tried to go down I got cliffed out. Up and down the mtn I went over and over but to no avail!! I couldn't get to my Ram!! Finally, I decided I had to make a dash for camp before I got caught up there in the dark.
I arrived back at camp before dark but found my partner nervously pacing with his rifle shouldered(and a little bit looped!). The grizzly that was following me decided to pay him a visit in the afternoon after the storm. My partner, Jann, was reading in the tent and fell asleep. Upon awakening, he climbed out of the tent and was slowly waking up when he noticed a dark object on a small hill across the meadow near camp. He grabbed his binos and saw the bear standing on his hind legs looking at him. He quickly grabbed his rifle from the tent and bolted over to his pack to get extra ammo(he only had 4 rounds in a holder on his stock of his SINGLE SHOT Ruger #1 (7mm mag). He climbed a small hill behind the tent and watched the bear quickly jogging towards him. He yelled at the bear and got his att'n but he only came faster......full speed!! When he was ~150 yds out he fired a warning shot but this was ignored by the bear still coming full speed!!! As quickly as he could he reloaded(single shot remember) but this time the warnings were over and a well placed shot brought the bear down!!!
The next day we headed out to retrieve my ram. We were able to get to him but there was no way we could go back up the same way(we had a couple of 8 foot drops). Finally, after 3 1/2 hours, I was able to touch him and what a feeling it was!!!

Just a rumour even though I have never heard about it. The world record shot a few years ago was from there.

I dont know why anyone would think they woul not be allowed into the record book. They are not some sort of streroid or scientific experiment. They are just sheep with awesome genetics that live in a non-hunting area that may migrate to a hunting area in the late part of the season.

This is no different then when they open up a new draw area in the states where the sheep probably have alberta blood in them and they have never been hunted.

BHB

whitetailsheds

Awesome to see what happens when that gene pool is left alone, freaks from what one is not normally accustomed to seeing. Might occasionally see a ram or bull elk/ moose, whitetail or whatever, that has eluded hunting pressure to grow into a monster. But down in that Luscar minesite there is GROUPS of monsters. Rancher up here has the same thought, "Just leave 'em alone....see what they grow into". He has had results too. Permission to hunt, NOT!

BHBThe other key to these big guys is the feed available and minerals. The mine reclaimation work has seeded in some of the best possible food . It is no secret, also, that the minerals found in association with coal are desirable for horn growth, and to a lesser extent antler growth. Sulphur salts are deemed to be the big agent.
Coal fields = big horn.

These are Cadomin rams. Don't ask me where I was or how I got them. But in this bach herd (upwards of 75 rams) was the 206 record that got taken last fall. These were the only ones that allowed me to get close enough for 'quality' pictures.

not sure but i know cadomin is open thats where he took those pics of bighorns that i posted a few pages back there was one shooter thats for sure and looks like easy area to hunt.

Walking in and setting up on the boundary of the closed area is the easy part!!! The hard part is getting a ram and it is pure luck harvesting one. The trick is to set up where you think one will cross (if they do). Otherwise anything outside of a couple hundred yards and someone else will likely shoot the ram.

Cadomin rams are essentially off limits and the area is closed to hunting except outside the boundaries of Cadomin. Its pretty rare having the big rams leave the closed area into the open area but it does happen.

Its a guarantee there will many other hunters sitting on the boundary waiting and hoping a ram leaves the closed area.

A sheep hunter actually has a better chance of success hunting the GOS areas elsewhere in AB than trying to get a ram outside the Cadomin boundary.

Tinney
03-07-2008, 11:56 AM
The trick I've been told with those rams is to wait until peak rut, when they will follow the ewes off the boundary. Almost all the ewes I saw were off mine property. BCrams is right, there are a lot better areas to hunt, with rams that are almost as big.

Unfortunately for us is that the peak rut is well after the season closes. Thats why the special premiers permit there is so good as it lest you hunt the rut when the rams may leave the mine. Even then some of the big boys dont leave as there are always some ewes on the mine to keep them busy.

The peak of the rut is when the GOS is closed. At this time, its usually just the American who has paid big money for the Ministers permit and a very lucky resident who drew the permit.

I never did say there are other areas that have bigger rams, only your chance of success is higher than trying to catch a Cadomin ram in the GOS area.
