hey folks,
i'm plannign on hunting black bear this spring. if i get a nice one, i'd like to have it made into a rug, without the head. anyone know how much this costs on average?

Hi

Ok 2 schools of thought.

A full rug with head is roughly $185 dollars per foot at Heads above the rest- a sponsor and member of this site.

However I have heard that you can ask for a simple tanning of the headless hide and that may range around $150 to $200 dollars for a bear.

Check with Ray and he'll give you some ideas.

Just my 2 cents here: if you get a real nice one, you may really want to consider the head mount alternative. After all, its a lifetime trophy:smile:

The cost for a bear rug with the head is about $125. per linear foot of hide from nose to tail. Don't know about the cost without the head. I would imagine that the cost to do the head is quite expensive. Tanning the hide is probably the less of the two costs.

thanks for the info. i'll fire head above the rest a pm. it won't be the only bear i shoot, so i'll start with the basic rug. if somehow i fluke out and manage a very nice bear, i'll consider getting the head mount. how long is the average black bear? 6-8 ft?

edit: can't seem to find heads above the rest in the member list. anyone have his email/contact info?

If you just get the hide tanned it will cost you $50-60/ft of the head to tail measurement when tanned. Depending on the tanning method a 7' ft bear can shrink to about 6'.

I shot a 6' bear two years ago. I cut the head and paws off and sent it down to Chilcotin Fur Tannery in 150 mile. If I had taken more time and done a better job of fleshing and tanning it would have only cost me about $175. As it was, Jason did the job, and did a great job at that, for under $225. His turn around time is about 60 days. I would recommend him to anyone for tanning. Look him up at http://www.cftannery.com/.

Why even take the head off??

I have few wolves and bears just tanned with the head on and the cost was no different. besides if it is a really big one, one day you might find the funds to have ahead rug made, then you can. Just another thing to think about.

the price on tanning sounds about right 250ish but from what ive heard when doing a aqtual rug the taxis do it per ft and it is measured from the nose to the hind feet not the tail. at least thats what they are doing up north. also if you get a 7 ft blackie you have your self a monster.

7 ft nose to tail is a big! bear. average is probably closer to 5 1/2 to 6 ft. A 400 lb bear probaly squares close to 6 1/2 ft. Mine was fat and I got a 172lbs of quality meat. Don't think it squared much over 6'3" if I remember correctly.

didnt know you could get any quality meat from a black bear unless maybe he was fattening up on a oat field?

Tanning was $250 for a sub 6' bear last year, paws and head on. It would have been another $60 for them to flesh them out. Company was Pacific something on Commercial Drive in Vanc.

Bighornhunter My first spring blackie, but all the chops needed was a little Mtl. steak spice. The hams were excellent. I'll be trying for another one this spring. God knows there's no shortage on Vanc. Island.

Wif wants paws and claws off before it goes on the floor.
