SS-That's what off-season posting is all about. Reflecting back and looking ahead.
I can't remember if you posted pics of your mount (if you got it back yet).

Here's my biggest muley to date(2007). Again, everyone's seen it already.

No I have not got it back, but I am not in a rush as I am on the island right now and would not get to look at it yet, so it can stay at the taxidermist until I am ready to pick it up.

By the way sweet deer there.

(not just for mark but everybody....dana...) once you have a deer like that down , do ones you saw in the past that you thought were big, are still big, do they become smaller ,or do you say man do i wish i got that buck he was huge. another ? do you think you have seen better than your best.

I have seen much better than my best - a few actually! I know a big buck when I see one and I know a small or nice representative buck when I see one! I have passed up many bucks over the years most would consider a buck of a lifetime. The last couple years, I have held out until the last day of my deer hunt to shoot a little one.

When I dumped my big guy, I knew I had the biggest buck myself, or anyone I knew had ever shot! It did make all my other racks and mounts seem smaller, but they were still trophys at the time of their demise!
I have probably seen about 3 other bucks in my life around the 200 inch mark! I got 3 shots off at a buck nearly identical to my big guy at close range, and missed em clean! (BUCKFEVER) Ive also seen a buck I figure about 36 inch wide!!!

Looks like most of these Kongs were taken on their winter range, yet they are hunted in their summer range too. shows how damn cagey they are. Now to take one in their summer range, that would really be impressive. (note, I have neither taken a trophy muley high, low or in the middle and come about 295 days short of Dana's 300 day commandment)

A few average bucks I've taken. I have several other 'average' 4 pt bucks but they're not scanned. I can't get head mounts of them all .. (just 2 for now). I regret selling several good mule antlers to the antler buyer when I was younger and stupid.

Being passionate about mule deer (or sheep or anything else) is the key to being consistently successful.

One boring day, with some time on my hands, I figured the barn wall needed fixing up. The mule deer (kind of dinky compared to many already posted) scored 172 3/8 net and the whitetail to its right netted just over 150. I don't recall the gross scores. Sorry, I know this is a mule deer board:wink: but I run into mostly whitetails.

Some amazing bucks on this post....holy smokes! Our island deer aren't even close to what you guys have access to on the mainland but I enjoy it all the same. I've only been hunting for 2 seasons now so I don't have many pics in my album but I'm working on changing that. Anyways, here's a pic of the biggest island buck I have been a part of...got him with one of my oldest friends this last season on November 12. I saw spotted him and he shot him.

Seems like the non-typical Gene is running wild in your neck of the woods...
I'd say its definetely linked to the wetter country, look at the size of bull moose from Blue river all the way to Revelstoke. There is 60" bulls in that country. Many huge non-typs have come out of the west koots too, i dont think deer densities are as high right now though.

Over here in the dryer climate of the lillooet area the typical deer are in greater abundance .its tough finding a big old non typical.ive seen a few over the yrs but are few and far between.

Thought you might fnd, this whitie interesting. Taken by Dad in the early 80's in the Christian. He thought it was a mulie when it stuck it's head out of the bush, as it crossed the Kettle, but as you can see it realized it was a keeper. Note the antler configuration to the front. The longest tine is 14 14 1/2" long from the beam.1261

Yea, similar to Logan lake. I have seen mainly typicals there, but do find the odd non-typical shed. And look along the fraser, mainly typicals in there but there are some non typs kicking around too...

Brambles,
If you look through the BC Book, you'll see that nontypical gene is very prominent within the Interior Wetbelt of the Monashees, so it reaches all the way to your neck of the woods. ;) IMO, devils club = nontypicals.

I guess I should get a copy of the BC book eh:?: I've never seen a non-typical in all the time I've spent in the bush. Probably shoot the first one I see just because its something new:redface: Normally the non-typicals that get shot around here are giants, not to many smaller non-typicals get shot. Not sure why

Good observation Matt, can't say where I hunt I've ever come across massive amounts of devils club, not as wet where I'm frequenting I guess. Maybe for here its best to hang around the decidous patches in the coniferous forests, as wet as I'm going to get:smile:

Back to the subject, there are sure a lot of dandy bucks posted up on this thread. Congrats to all the lucky hunters.

What do you guys/girls think - are you seeing/hearing of more large bucks taken now compared to 10 or 20 years ago? If you are hearing of more, is it just the effect of the internet making the info available to us, or do you think there are more big guys out there?

My first mulie. Forked brow tines, and a kicker on the right side, gross score (home measured) right at 170. We saw him on the side of the road on the drive home after spending all day climbing mountains looking for anything with 4 points. He obliged and stood still while I jumped out of the truck, and shot him. He ran a little, but fell close to a side road. 10 yard drag to the truck, and home we went. :)

I agree with SSS and RB, the past few years have been glory years for big bucks! The record books have recieved way more entries than usual in the past 4 years! The BC #1 muley typical record held its position for about 13 years, then has been beat twice since 2004! 10 years without a real hard winter in the south half of B.C. Heh - yeah, and this was definitely a "high pressure" area. It was a day or two before the season closed and there were other hunters everywhere up there. There were still two trucks in sight ahead of us (the nearest one no more than 400 yards ahead) who had to have driven right by this guy and never saw him (he was just standing there feeding about 40 yards off the road - it wasn't like he came bounding into the area in the 10 seconds between trucks).

Some days, it's just your turn - that day, it was mine. :)

because of the size and such..it was carefully looked at by a senior biologist..as was the cape..blacktail..it was shot very near the current #2 and a couple of real crankers..T-bone has a AMAZING blacktail from the area..finest I have seen EVER.
The color of the horns has faded somewhat over the years..If ya read the story..a LOT of luck and being in the right place at the right time...and that WAS NOT experience...lol Wwhere my big cali took 3 years to get the one specific ram I was hunting...kept seeing finally got a shot and harvested him..the blacktail was less skillfull

Here is a picture of Dr. Jim hatter with my biggest blacktail. It would have been close to 150 lbs field dressed and was an old two point. I shot it in 1989 on sidney Island. It took a couple of days to get him once I found him. For sidney Island he was huge, the biggest Jim ever saw come off the Island.

I hunted Sidney Island from 1982 through 2002. All hunting was done on the private side of the island. Never did get a draw for the park.

During this period it was a hunters pardise, some, if not the, best deer hunting in BC. Jim Hatter tried to manage it to grow world class trophy Fallow deer. Unfortunately, after about 8 years of intense management, Dr. Peter Pearse accepted an offer to sell the big bucks for $2 a lb to a sausage making company in Montreal, all without Jims knowledge. However, there were always lots of deer and locals could cull and shoot meat deer at a very reasonable cost.

After 2002, waterfront development began and of course with people moving on to the Island hunting was banned for a year. But the deer went out of control, and owners and their friends now do the culling. One owner told me that last year he shot over 100 deer on the Island himself. three friends of mine went there just before Christmas and took home 34 deer. The meat tastes just like veal, fine grained, and tender.

There are properties for sale on the Island, so if you want to shoot lots and lots of deer, live in a rainshadow with a mild climate close to Victoria.....go for it. Just invite me over some time to help with the deer problem.

Hey Porky, I grew up with the Hatter's. Great hunters! Shot a few blacktails with Jim once, not as big as yours though. The provincial park area of the island was sold to the Feds a few years back, so no hunting in the park as it is a fed park.

Well, just for fun, here are pic's of my largest Whitetail, and my first buck. I shot it 11-19-71 in the state of Vermont, a year before I emigrated to Canada. NO, I was not a draft dodger, just fell in love with BC after spending two summers trout guiding on Charlotte Lake in the Chilcotin. It weighted 135 lbs at the game check and was a very good deer for that area and time. I still have the antlers, it's the hair that's gone missing. Later that weekend I got the three geese with two shots from my dad's old Parker, and my brother got the fork buck, and can't remember which one of us shot which of the two black Ducks and the Mallards. Didn't keep a journal back then. Can't believe it was 37 years ago!

Yeah, that was one of the nicest shots I've pulled off. He was bedded at 200 yards behind some deadfall, his girlfriend had me pegged but he was stupid and didn't seem concerned. I knew his stupidity was going to wear off If I tried to move closer. All I had was his head and some neck, I didn't want to split the rack, I had done it to another deer previously that year so put the crosshairs just behind and below his ear and squeezed.

He didn't even move a muscle, when I got to him his legs were still curled under bedded, just his head was laying down. Super clean:cool:

Well, I know I am really late on this one, but I have made a decision to start posting. I have been an observer for over a year, and now I am chomping at the bit to get in some interesting conversations and points of view.

Here are a few deer I have taken around PG and Region 8 the last couple years. I have only gone digital the last 3 years, so I will have to scan some other great pics I have and post later.

This guy was nice and even...he will soon be above my staircase!
