One of my fav shows! I wish they would have looked at differences between compound, x-bow and trad bows with broadheads!

Or even just a variety of broadhead types would be good.

We did a version of this once in camp. But it was all broadheads, shot into a cast iron frying pan to determine which head stood up the best.

I would have liked to see a trad and compound go against the crossbow

Anyone ever tested this one? Fire a rifle into 5gal bucket of sand the bullet will not pass through, fire an arrow and it will pass through?
I found it hard to believe but my 300wby (not loaded hot) wouldnt pass through at 30yds. I have yet sacrifice an arrow to the ...myth?

its because a bullet will expand on impact .. an arrow will not

like mikey said. the bullet expands, whereas an arrow does not. Bullets transfer their energy to the target. Also the expansion of the slug causes more friction and a slight loss in mass, which reduces the penetration. An arrow is designed to retain energy, forward momentum, as it passes through a target.

I haven't ever tried it with a broadhead, but in my experience an arrow won't fully penetrate (ie. exit) a bucket of sand.

My 470 Mbogo with 500gr solids does though. :D

At our archery range the back stop is a sand bank. I miss means a berried arrow.

Penetration also has a lot to do with the type of broadhead used, IMHO.

To my way of thinking a Mechanical broadhead wastes too much KE in the act of deploying the cutting blades as there is a lot of penetration robbing friction being built up by the simple act of the blades turning over inside the animal.

The chances of improper deployment are too high - thus either missing the lethal shot that we are all looking for, or worse yet, only wounding the animal from lack of penetration.

I think that "cut on contact" heads increase the penetration by a considerable amount more than mechs, even taking into account the 'trocar' tip on most mech heads.

In Tanzania, my hunting partner and I used a grass-seed bag full of sand as a target butt for practicing with his cape buffalo rig (its hard to find foam 3-D targets in the Selous Game Reserve). This was an 85lb Bowtech Allegience with 900grain arrows. It penetrates on game like you would not believe. The field tipped arrows did not penetrate to the fletching. We also shot it many times into dense sandbanks along the rivers for practice, and the arrows would penetrate only about 12 inches.

Again, a broadhead would probably have penetrated further.

Here's a pic of me shooting Don's bow (along the bank of the Great Ruaha River, for those that might be interested)..

And here's a couple pics of the arrows/BHs...

I am not sure if this will work or not (you may need to be registered at HuntingFootage.com to see it??), but here is a link to some video of the penetration testing we did on Cape buffalo...
