I have put a few mulies on the ground.I have shot 3 that I call 300 pounders. You know the kind that are hard to roll around on a hillside. The biggest one was standing amongst a group of other deer when first spotted. His backline was alot higher than every other deer within the herd. When loading him in the truck the 5/16 strandboard used to load broke in half.He really added to the group sausage pot that year.RB

Put a imm moose beside the largest mule deer around and the moose will still dwarf the deer (any of the moose/deer I've seen in the interior/caribou anyway)

I've shot a few imm moose and they have all been in the 325 to 400lb range. Unless I saw it with my own eyes, I would call B.S on any mule deer DRESSING in the 300 to 350lb range.... standing weight O.K but not dressed.

Even the few pictures of these "300lb" deer are still considerably smaller than a imm moose. Just my opinion!

Agreed. I've seen immies at 325 - 360, and raghorn 5 pt elk at 375 on the hook. My 323" elk was 430 lbs to the butcher, and he could have swallowed a muley buck whole!

The largest of the male deer of The Rocky Mountain Mule Deer variety would be 310 lbs. dressed and estimated live weight could be a possible 475 lbs. Only two percent of deer are over 250 lbs and 1 percent over 300 lbs according to studies, that percentage shows it's low for over 250 lbs. Does average way lighter 150 lbs this info according to The Deer of North America. Jelly Bean.

In region 8 where I hunt, every year we see at least 2-4 bucks well over 325 pounds live.... the 3 point my son got in November was 131 pounds, legless, headless and hideless at the butcher.... I would call him small for a lot of the bucks we see in this area....we also see lots of does that push the 200+ mark, in fact, in the same cut block we got his buck, the day before we saw a buck that went at least 100-150 pounds more and he had 2 does that I swear were as big if not bigger that the buck we got....

Lots of small/nornal size deer around, but there is a lot of bruisers showing up....we even see it in our moose area....a large bull had a rack of 36-40 inches and might go 8-900 pounds live weight, 15+ plus years ago.... we now see or hear of bulls 48-58 inches and pushing 1100+ pounds....my Dad started hunting this area in '64 and started taking me in'70.... new feed due to fires, logging etc. has opened up the country for critters to grow!!!

my $0.02 worth......;)

Maybe I'm confused or others are...not sure. My definition of "dressed" is head off, hide off, gutted and legs bucked at the knee's. That being said, if people still claim that they have shot bucks that "dress" over 300lbs, I'd call B.S (not having seen it for myself.) Standing weight? I'm sure there are bucks out there that are in the 350lb range (which would put them in the 225 - 250 range, maybe even 275 and I would consider that HUGE but 300+ come on!

Weight like shoulder height tend to be exaggerated, a Rocky Mountain muledeer stands 39 inches at the shoulder. about belt high on a person. Hunters are fisherman at heart when it comes to size of their deer. Few people know how to estimate weight of animals simply by looking at it. Most people over estimate by 25 per cent. The longer you drag it and lift it it gets heavier by the minute.lol Field dressed split from throat to pelvis everything out feet on and blood drained. You must have proper scales to get the proper weight. Multiply field dressed weight by 1.275 to get live weight. Deers blood and entrails account for a 5th of it's total weight. heart liver lungs 10 lbs skin 12 lbs feet six to 8 lbs bones 20 lbs, head 8 lbs. Estimate about 50 per cent deboned meat of the total deers weight when field dressed. Leonard Lee Rue 111

Fisher-Dude
01-25-2008, 10:19 AM
Whities tend to be a lot smaller in body size. My biggest is a 162" buck - to the butcher, 145 lbs. Average basket 4 point whities tend to be from 95 - 110 lbs to the butcher, while 3 and 4 year olds tend to go 115 - 125 lbs. A good mature (130" - 140" class) buck gets you 125 - 140 lbs.

Dakota whities will be heavier on average (Peace region bucks).

My largest mulie weighed 202 lbs at the butcher. No head hide, guts, or legs. We packed it out in 2 pieces. The hinds were 92 lbs and the fronts 110lbs. He was a very fat deer but only a 3 point. I have had 2 4x5 elk - one at 278 dressed and one at 418 dressed. The lighter one was young and the heavier one seemed to be regressing in antlers. I am very skeptical of mulies field dressing over 300 lbs but I would love to see one in hunting season.

You have to weigh on a proper scale to get the correct weight, if a person is guessing then not accurate. Also how much meat is lost from the bullet expanding. Bone in or bone out, that's the question too? It's all fun anyway when hunters talk how big the deer was. By the time you lift it in the back of the truck it gained at least fifty lbs.

Do you have those same numbers for rocky mountain mule deer Jelvis? Reading back through the thread it seems like there are a lot of 160 lbs. class bucks taken. Just wondering what age class my buck was?If the 58% calculation was correct my deer would have weighed 280 lbs. on the hoof which is believable. How old do you think he was? I was thinking maybe 4.5 years...???

To start off with ,you loose 40% from all bone on an animal and then there is waist that a butcher doesent bother trimming off that might be 10%. that leaves you with 50% take home meat ,thats if it is all boned out. When you take a moose that is 600 pounds hanging in the cooler ready to butcher ,then go pick up your meat ,you think to yourself is this all i get back ,you think you have been shafted out of a pill of meat. You have to sit down and figure out what the weight of the meat you got back and compare it to the waist from the animal ,i have and it almost works out perfect at the end.

Whether or not a hunter is after a trophy, he or she is likely to be interested in how handsome a pair of antlers a buck has. Next, the hunter is most interested in how big it is. The Rocky Mountain Mule Deer is the largest of it's species. Jel

My biggest bodied buck was about 170 lbs carcass only (no skin, head, legs, guts, etc) after hanging for 10 days - might have been a few pounds more before hanging. Not sure what he would have been live weight, but he was a bit of a brute. My skinny butt couldn't drag him the 200 metres downhill to the truck, I had to cut him in half just to drag him. He was pretty old, teeth very worn down and regressed antlers.

Dragging a deer out from the bush whether it's a blacktail, whitetail or a mule deer is hard when your by your self but even harder when theres no snow. I can pull good but when it's dry ground it's cut it up and pack or get a buddy or two to help pull. If there is snow what a difference, even then I got one buck high on a ridge in snow, a nice four point muley with a muscular body, even in the snow I could hardly move it around to gut him out. I know there are big heavy bucks here in nor river area but with no scale I could only guess. Thats why I like having other hunting partners with me when I hunt. Jelly Bean
