I've seen comments like the following a few times lately, and I have to admit, I don't really get it.....

I was one of those camped there in the 70s and 80s with all the other guys. Each year we usually took a moose or an elk, or both, in our camp of 4 hunters. The other camps did quite well too. There was always game all over the place despite all the hunters and the level of harvest. There was a LOT of comraderie between the camps, and I made some lifelong friends with those guys. I even remember a couple of fellows throwing on their packboards and helping my brother and I pack a bull elk I'd shot out of a $hithole. They wouldn't take any meat, just drank a couple of rums with us back at camp, and became perennial friends.

It seems different today - fewer hunters (had the whole top end of a valley to ourselves for over a week this year, only other guy I talked with was a mountain biker not a hunter), less comraderie, and a bit of a competitive attitude. Lots of animals around too - but because of antler (and species) restrictions, we weren't allowed to take one for the freezer.

I've been hunting since the late 70's and spent a lot of time in moose and elk camps with my Pa and his buddies. I spent a good chunk of the 90's doing "hardcore" backpack hunts with only a couple other like-minded buddies...not too much emphasis on the camp-life and camraderie, I suppose. But since 2000 I have dedicated some of my hunting season every year to hunting out of camps with family and friends.

A good friend of mine started an annual deer camp back in 2000 because he realized it was something he missed from when he was a kid, and he knew that if some people from his generation didn't pick it up, the kids in the next generation and the ones after would miss out. He was absolutely right. The only reason there isn't more of this, is because the people that miss it and lament about the loss of it don't get off their ass and do anything about it.

This year, I hunted out of four camps...1 for elk in Sept, and 3 for deer in Nov and Dec. The camraderie in these camps was no different than it was back in the 70's and 80's.

This lack of camraderie (percieved anyway) noted by some, however, could be one of the major reasons there is low rates of retention and recruitment of hunters today. We all know that on the whole hunting has traditionally been a social activity. If we are really serious about bringing people into the sport, and keeping those in it that are leaving, I think a lot can be said for providing an environment for newbies to learn and to appreciate all that goes with a hunting camp and a reason for the others to stay.

Here are a few pics I'd like to share that capture some of the good times from my 2007 season, and maybe help encourage others to do the same...(I haven't asked everyone in these pics for their permission to post them on the internet...if anyone sees their face in these and doesn't want it on the www, let me know and I'll delete them!)....

Hopefully others will post some pics of their camps too!

My point in posting this is that it doesn't have to be any different today than it was in the "good old days". We just have to hunt that way and make the effort to involve others. Even with point restrictions there is lots of legal game out there.

Set up a camp next year, and make sure to invite some young hunters, or maybe some hunters you know that haven't been doing it lately for one reason or another.

Very well written. Getting game is just a bonus when you think the way you do. Reminds me of an old friend that just passed on his hunting ground to me and my partner. Thanksgiving was the highlight with the kids and all his family on top of the mountain. Sharing a fire is where it's at.

SSSSter,
I totally agree with you. We are indeed living in the good ol' days as we speak. While everyone seems to long for the glory days, they really miss the opportunity to make today the glory days for themselves. I think Goatguy has been hitting the nail on the head lately. We are our worst enemies. We are so concerned with 'our' secret spots, that we are loosing the grasp of why we truly hunt. We are so worried that 'our' spots are going to get ruined that we keep it all to 'ourselves' and die with the secret tight on our lips.
The last few years, I have really enjoyed our annual camps. The friendship, joking, teasing, story telling, hearty meals and warm tents are much better than the single man trips I've had in the past. The hunting success has seemed to increase too, as more eyes and ears and legs to find the animals can work for you, not against you. But sadly, I must say, there are many many out there who let jealousy rule and I have been slammed by numerous people for the fact I am the single most evilest person on the face of the planet. You see, I hunt with friends and we kill big bucks and I share our success on sites like this. My goal has always been to get the fire and the passion burning in others. It is sad when I get criticized for even posting my kid's first deer on the internet. You see, now that area will be overrun with hunters. But my reply to those that criticize is normally to post even more pics, cause I just love pissing off those who piss green with envy.

Here's to the GLORY DAYS!!!!

Those multi guy camps look great, I am truely envious. Personally I don't know many guys who hunt hard and who can actually plan far enough ahead to organize and commit to something like that.

Lots of guys talk big about hunting like that but when it comes down to crunch time more tend to back out and make excuses than follow through with it. I guess thats what happens when you live in a town infested with hippies.....

Here's my solo camp, it gets kinda boring at camp during those long winter nights but I'd rather be chasing an animal and see nothing than at home kicking my ass for not even trying.

....those pictures speak more words than I could type in an week...!!

to me, THAT is what this game is all about... the times with friends and family. It doesn't take pictures of big horns to get this hunter excited about the future seasons, but more about the great times sharing a passion of the outdoors experience. (won't turn my eye at big horns though!!)

Dana,

You totally got my point, and said it better than I did. Thanks, and thanks for sharing those great pics. (mule deer = !!!)

I agree that there is too much "competition" within the hunting fraternity these days. Being a little more accepting (and encouraging!) of other guys out there would go along way I think. Not that everyone can't still have a "secret spot" or three! :D I have been known to be tight lipped about a few "patches".

But someone needs to make the effort to be more inclusive. Not all hunts have to be for "muy grande" or "twister". And the time spent in camp with friends and family will make you feel a lot better on your rocking chair someday than any horns or antlers.

And there are lots of other reasons why people don't do more of this stuff. We all seem to be busier than ever. Holiday time is at a premium with wives and kids wanting to use the RVs, ATVs, personal watercraft or whatever on some beach in the summer, etc etc. There are no shortage of "excuses".

But if we want this lifestyle to be part of our future, and part of our kids future, I really think it is incumbent on those of us between 30 and ?? (50? 60? +?) to create the kind of environment where others want to participate. (No, I really think its the 30 to 50 yo's...the 50+'ers have been carrying the weight long enough!) And IMHO, hunting camps like those shown are the best way to do it. All the additional hunting opportunity you can make up won't have the same impact.

Cheers,
4Ster

Brambles, love your attitude! You won't see much from the couch!

If you build it, they will come. If you are interested in sharing your camp, despite the good intentions and cancellations, your friends will come. My friends early season deer camp can have a dozen people in it at times. We had 6 wall tents there this year! Its been great. The BS poker, story telling, poetry reading and yes, even singing  in the wall tent in the evenings is totally infectious. And I can't think of a better environment for kids to be exposed to hunting.

Cheers,

I've done an annual trip with my dad and several cousins for the last six years. A buddy of my comes every other year and this year his son tagged along and took his first moose. Some of the faces change from year to year but the atmosphere doesn't. It's a great time. I've given up six turkey dinners at home, but the quality time with family and friends is worth it.

This is a great thread... I couldn't agree more... There is nothing that I look more forward to than hunting camps with good friends and family... Over the past three years I have been very fortunate that friends and mentors have invited me to their camps... During these camps I have gained more experience than I ever could have imagined, and have countless lifelong memories...

Long live the good old days!

Hunting's camps were the only way to hunt, was so good to have 6 or more hunters around camp, we did moose camps, deer camps. was so much fun , lots of laughting, going on, and more fun when someone came into camp with a moose or deer down, then the work started, had to go out and get it in, and many times in the dark, with the old white gas lantren, thoes days are now long gone, trying to get some new one started with friends is tough when everone works so mant diffrents shifts to get the same time off, since some of the old timers (DAD) have passed away, it's up to us the younger old guy's and gals now a days. trying to show are kids how things were back then, day's well missed,, this was a great thread to be part of, thanks,

Never had a father which hunted (passed away 20 years ago) BUT my step dad which is 74 this month has taken me on as his underling, and the past 3 seasons weve spent a week each year out and about. Those have been some of the best times spent with family i can remember(my mom just got her hunting license @ the age of 69,and her 1st deer this year)The plans are being put in place for next season already,so we can invite others along with enough notice. I'm with you guys one hundred percent.
I can get out and hunt on a daily basis because of where I live and what I do for a living, but the absolute highlight of my season is when my sons, Martyonthewater and Betterofffishing come up for our annual father/son weekly hunt. Lots of BS flying around, barbs, and general good natured bantering.
Last season we invited a couple of folks outside of the family to the camp and it just wasn't the same. We've sort of decided to add family members only, as my grandsons grow into the sport, and maybe have a second trip where others can be included.
Now, if only we can teach Marty not to shoot sick moose or catch diseased trout , we'll be fine.

The thing I really miss when I hunt is family. I never grew up around hunting, and now in hindsight REALLY wish my family had been into it a little bit more. I'll have my own kids soon enough and it will be great to get them out there at an early age. I hope they enjoy it as much as I would have if my dad had taken me out.

For those that say they can't find anyone share a camp with, there are a ton of hunters right here that you can befriend. It's funny to think that some of my best hunting partners I actually met online. I met Mattb on Monstermuleys. We shared emails back and forth numerous times and then finally met for coffee in the Loops. We did some shed hunting together and soon became such good friends that he willingly gave me his rifle to kill MassNTrash. :) BCrams and I met online as well. We shared emails back and forth for several years before I finally met him when he strolled into our 2005 Muley Camp at 3 am askin' "Is this dana's camp?" LOL! I met Ruttinbuck on HS and then chased Cali bighorns with the camera with him. One spring we decided to do a bear camp one weekend and we had an absolute blast. It just takes a little effort is all. Sites like this can hold some great hunting partners.

I meet Andy ,blacktail stalker hear on this forum and now he and me hook up for elk trips and island deer trips. Andy is a hard core hunter ,all he thinks of is hunting. He is an avid compound bow hunter as well ,there is only one thing that i don't like about him ,i have to take two steps compared to his one step ,hard person to keep up with when hiking into an area, he is a tall person with long legs. It is nice to hook up with other young hunters so i can pass any knowledge i have to them. Regarding the good old days ,the best thing i have found about hunting in my career is the group of guys you are with on the trip. Its not about getting something ,that's just a bonus. It would not be a nice time out there hunting on a trip buy yourself ,believe me ,i have been there a few times including last year ,its no fun ,very lonley

For those that say they can't find anyone share a camp with, there are a ton of hunters right here that you can befriend. It's funny to think that some of my best hunting partners I actually met online. .

Aint this the truth. Met some great hunting partners here. Spend some time getting to know the ones you want and it does not take too long to figure out who you would hunt with and who you wouldn't

Good thread and great pictures people

Wow. Thanks for sharing all the great pics guys!

Blacktail3113 and Hunter1947...great shots. They really show what I was attempting to get across. Same goes for Caveman and youngfella. :)

Shutzen...thanks for the welcome! I am a long time lurker of this site, mainly to see what the heck Gatehouse is up to. :) AR takes up a heckuva lot of my www-time though, so I haven't found enough time to contribute much here. Will try and change that.

Gates...you know that pic was just for you bro'.

J_T, onesock... cheers!

Dana, I agree wholeheartedly. I have met so many great people on-line that I have subsequently hunted with (mainly from another site) that my GF figures these forums are like internet dating for hunters. ;)

Cheers,
4Ster

J_T, onesock... cheers! Careful 4Ster, you may not really want to be making it known you associate with bowhunters. Might work against you if your looking for a date on here.

LOL! As I typed that last reply I thought to myself, 'oh my God, I'm going to get ripped by many thinking I troll these sites like an online dating service.' LMAO!!! But in all seriousness, these sites are amazing to network, share info and meet hunters that have the same mindset as you. It's amazing how many good friendships I have made. I will temper that though, that people need to do their research first before they jump whole hog into a hunting trip with people they have never met before. I'm sure there are a bunch of HBC bear hunters that know exactly what I am talking about.

Here's one of my most favorite pics of the good ol' days.

I really like the black and whites for giving the Good Ol' Days of the Here and Now more of a classic feel.

I agree! I have met some life-long friends via the 'net....but it attracts all kinds. I have hunted in some really interesting places with people I only new by e-mail or the net and it has worked out every time, but I always worry a little.

Me too.....awesome pic! The deer blends in better in B&W too, which kind of adds to the depth of it..

That thing is a HAWG! Congrats! The pic looks great in B&W too.

B&W is also a good trick for hiding blood in a photo.
