Not sure what exactly this will mean for FN control of natural resources but it sounds like a good thing for us

Great news. I doubt it's the last we've heard on the subject though.

You know, as the Minister states, this was never about giving the Indigenous people control or 'veto'. There was a lot of misinformation and mistrust. Now, mistrust of Government, I completely understand. Every Government.

It doesn't really change the current state. For those that sit on any of these committees, we know, this is about sharing in the management of our lands and wildlife. About using all available intelligence/data. Indigenous Gov and Indigenous stakeholders are ON those committees, have been for over 10 years and will continue to be. "Co-management" and "Shared Decision Making" are not new phrases.

For myself, I'm encouraged Government can back off of a contentious issue, while we work to address other important wildlife matters.

My thoughts exactly. An election is coming and they got worried. They are supposed to work for the majority of residents but it appears the politicians have their own agenda. Hopefully the voters see them for what they are but I don't put much faith in the average citizen.

This appears to be good news, but we all need to realize that it's not over. They are pivoting their approach, recalculating, scheming... The woke sickness won't just stop and accept people don't want 3% of the population to have veto power over 97% of the land and related decisions in this province. And really it's less than 3% because it's often the handful of politicians in that population that serve their own interests and not the population they purport to represent.

Stay vigilant or we'll find ourselves persona non grata in our own homeland. I mean who am I kidding, we already are... But it will be enforced, and all lost.

This is on hold for now so it won't impact the upcoming election but if they are elected again it will be back guaranteed.

British Columbia's First Nations Leadership Council is expressing extreme disappointment over the provincial government's decision to drop planned amendments to the Land Act that would have cleared the way for a shared decision-making process with First Nations when it comes to the use of public land.
The N-D-P government announced it had decided not to proceed with proposed amendments after holding a series of meetings with stakeholders, citing a need to further engage with people and demonstrate the real benefits of shared decision-making in action.
Earlier this month, B.C. United Leader Kevin Falcon said his party could not "support giving veto power to five per cent of the population with impacts to over 95 per cent of public land," referring to First Nations people.
In a Wednesday evening statement, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, said "We are absolutely disgusted that the opposition leaders of B.C. United and the B.C. Conservatives leveraged the proposed Land Act amendments as a shameless opportunity for partisan political gain."
Also in the statement, Cheryl Casimer of the First Nations Summit Political Executive described it as "shocking and regressive," that a small cohort of so-called leaders utilized these amendments to tap into racist fears and beliefs for their own benefits.
It also suggested that the amendments would have created space in the law to implement an agreement that may be reached in the future -- agreements which are negotiated in accordance with the process and requirements of section 7 of the Declaration Act passed in 2019.

I guess the First Nations Leadership Council is disappointed. You were so close to having your cake and eating it too and now it has been snatched away from the evil opposition.

Land Act amendments will return: Sea to Sky MLAWest Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy says he expects the NDP government to bring its Land Act amendments back after the October election, despite putting them on ice in late February.

“If they get re-elected, then they’ll just move on. I don’t see them changing track,” said Sturdy in an interview with Pique.

The Land Act amendments being considered by the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship were presented as enabling Land Act decisions to be made with Indigenous governing bodies as part of the process.

They were intended to bring the Land Act in line with the province’s Declaration Act, which works as a framework for implementing the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and allows the province to give Indigenous Bodies a formal role in decision making on Land Act matters under certain circumstances. The province is already legally required to consult with First Nations on Land Act matters

I know Jordan Sturdy personally, and have since the 80s (I believe Gatehouse does as well), and he is a straight shooter and very intelligent man. I don’t doubt he is correct.

Well it will be back, it’s certainly isn’t gone, but since it was unpopular need to hold off to get re-elected, and unfortunately they will. Industry is shutting down, sawmills closing up one after another, pulp mills will follow I expect. Another 4 years there won’t be much left to pay the bills.
