Got a good local buck this year. Only deer i saw the whole season
Got out for an afternoon hunt with the wind blowing a favourable direction to still hunt a ridge that i know deer like to bed down around. Was on my way out when I walked into this buck bedded right in the moss 12 yards away with his neck craned around staring at me. I look away and act neutral as i get the rifle up. When i shoulder it and cock the hammer, his neck in my cross hairs he gets up and starts to trot away, i lean left into a new shooting lane and get him with a sharp quartering away shot ~20 yards. Its 3pm, not much time for pictures. An hour to get him loaded using the gutless method (bone in quaters). Another hour pack out in the pitch black and fog with 120lbs on a shitty old pack frame that i was very great full that did not bust apart on the way.
My thoughts in the seconds between seeing and shooting him were I thought he was just a huge 2x2 and i had wanted to hold out for a better buck, especially given the required haul out. But then thought what a cool close encounter experience and just round it off. Turned out to be a nice even 3x3 that i managed to get on a trail camera a couple times. Didn’t see an exit wound so felt around the offside shouldered and recovered the 150gr NP from my .308
