I had a great sheep trip that I was going to share on the site, but the forum is difficult to manage with pictures and formatting so I just put it on spikecamp because it is such a slick set up.

UPDATE:
*** I just did a copy paste of the story and it may have worked....formatting may not look good on your computer ***

The story is below. No idea how to delete this thread and start fresh....

It’s free to join, you just need to be a member of one of these groups: WSSBC, WSFAB, RMGA, BHA Bc chapter. Just another resource for hunters. https://spikecamp.com/

We should be members on all the forums and platforms. We should also be members in as many conservation groups as possible. If we divide and not align ourselves together we will lose our ability to hunt. HBC is a huge resource for hunters. Private platforms like HBC, Alberta Outdoorsman all need to be supported, The big social networks are constantly banning content, shadow banning and censorship.

haha. that's one opinion. It's not an apples to apples comparison.
They have podcasts and other resources. I like it.

Don't worry. You can still come on this forum and yell at people anonymously...

ahh. interesting. I did not know that.
I figured it wasn't competition for huntingbc, but i didn't realize it required an afficiliation.

huntingbc is more banter and bs. Likely won't find a COVID thread with thousands of pages of discussion on Spike Camp. :)

Off the highway, down the valley and up the drainage, it didn't take long before we were having to make calculated route decisions and take very careful steps. This was my first sheep hunt and I quicky realized how focused you had to be to avoid injuries.

Multiple creek crossings, side hilling scree, climbing up and out of creek drainages when you get cliff'd out was hard enough, but then you had moose brush to navigate through as you made the final push into the alpine after a long day filled with heat, sweat and dehydration.

The hike in took 12+hrs and it was tiring...
We set up camp, in what ended up being terrible spot.

https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/14c0d9d7-f35a-4212-afc9-62760d13749b/1701750192640.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/14c0d9d7-f35a-4212-afc9-62760d13749b/1701750192640.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

Why was it terrible? Because when we woke up the next day and spotted two rams:
https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/f2ed09b8-73d2-4264-9da1-cd8fb8bfbe9d/1701750192656.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/f2ed09b8-73d2-4264-9da1-cd8fb8bfbe9d/1701750192656.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

They were good rams, and they were headed to bed:

And there bed gave them a perfect view of our horribly located camp:

Maybe it was a quick break before heading higher, or maybe it was our tent in plain sight, whatever it was, those rams took off while this sheep rookie was setting up a tarp in prep for a long day of watching the rams during a hot August day. .... f'n morons.

So then we set off to find them again that afternoon ... unsuccessfully.

Day two came to an end.

*******************

Morning of day three started with us hiking and spending time behind the glass. The goal was to ensure that the rams were no longer close to camp before we left to a different area to look. We did not spot the rams. We headed down another valley with lights packs carrying a tarp, sleeping bags, glassing gear and a couple of days worth of food.

During a coffee break, it did not take us long to spot more sheep:
https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/a41ec60d-8391-4ffa-9690-c624dffb9b4c/1701750192693.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/a41ec60d-8391-4ffa-9690-c624dffb9b4c/1701750192693.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

We continued our push down the valley after determining that our focus should remain on the two rams that ghosted us. A we got near the end of the valley, we climbed up the North side and glassed for a while, and then crossed to the South side to glass some more. It was when we glassed that North aspect that we turned up the rams again:

https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/899863cc-0405-43eb-8e53-4e7141eb7fd2/1701750193439.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/899863cc-0405-43eb-8e53-4e7141eb7fd2/1701750193439.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

We were all smiles after the previous day's rookie mistake of taking our eyes off the rams.
It was hot day, on the sun exposed slope, as we watched them from across the valley. We did not dare take our eyes off of them.
The rams spent the next 2 hours feeding up to their bed for the day.
Unfortunately, they climbed 3/4 of the way up the mountain to a spot that gave no opportunity for a closer look.
Once the rams were bedded and we were confident that they were content with their current location with no intention of moving to a second bed, we headed back down across the valley to get a little closer.

After spending most of the day watching them we had a great feeling that the one ram was a good one, but we would have to shoot him based on age and not curl. That was stressful, and it required more time behind the glass.

https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/314587cf-a32d-4977-9ad8-8c4ac634ff5c/1701750192747.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/314587cf-a32d-4977-9ad8-8c4ac634ff5c/1701750192747.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

That night we set up the tarp, laid down the sleeping bags on a emergency 'space' blanket and slept on the grass close to the rams. It was starting to feel like a proper sheep hunt:
https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/ba6aec11-4b51-460e-9143-f0759a816aae/1701750192771.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/ba6aec11-4b51-460e-9143-f0759a816aae/1701750192771.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

**********************

We woke up the morning of day 4 very focused on finding a glassing spot that might be close enough to determine age. Within 100 yds, our progress was stopped by lambs and yews feeding. Fortunately we spotted them before they spotted us.
https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/db5b6787-6a28-4120-bf6e-df60577c6854/1701750193276.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/db5b6787-6a28-4120-bf6e-df60577c6854/1701750193276.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

We decided not to continue any further and set up the glass where we were. We quickly relocated the rams. They were still on the mountain side and confirmation of age was not possible. Even if we had confirmed legal age at that point, recovering them would be dangerous and nearly impossible. They were not close to the valley bottom. He was looking good though.

We continued watching his as the sun rose and the light improved. He was looking even better:

It was still day 4 and we knew a shot would not be fired. The decision was made to go back to base camp, and grab a couple more days of food. Some would argue for more food in the pack, but we were forcing ourselves to make a play as we had been very patient thus far.
We also felt that if the ram wasn't going to come to us, then we would have to go to it. Our only access to gain elevation was from a spot further down the valley. This was going to require us to walk right under the rams in the bottom of the valley.

https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/c9aa66a0-7312-476c-a013-c648e11cc24c/1701750192865.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format&w=1400&h=1400&fit=max&impolicy=ResizeCrop&constraint=downsize&aspect=fit (https://media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net/asset/c9aa66a0-7312-476c-a013-c648e11cc24c/1701750192865.png?ixlib=rails-4.2.0&fm=jpg&q=75&auto=format)

We felt if the rams could watch us the entire time, as we walked from their right to their left, then maybe they wouldn't spook. We gambled and it paid off, but we did bump about 15-20 lambs and yews out of that valley bottom. Oops!

This was the camping spot for night two under the tarp. This spot sucked.
We wrapped our bodies around a bunch of rocks, and made due.

While I was trying to find camp my partner was moving along the same path across the valley underneath the rams as well. We made the choice to walk separately versus together.

With me arriving first, it gave me ample time to brew up my 4th shit of the day thanks to my inability to successfully process another sort of food in a somewhat natural way.

Dehydrated meals are a battle for me, and my toilet paper and baby wipes were losing the battle. While I waged war behind a rock, my partner had no idea where the hell I went when he showed up. His search for me led to him finding the perfect spot for verifying the ram's age.

Over the years, the creek had carved out this deep draw that brought us directly under the rams at a very close distance. The sun was in their rams' eyes. We climbed up and out out of this old creek draw, and set up for a look in the best spot so far.

After nearly 100 photos with the kowa 883 and ollin adapter, we both agreed that there were 8 visible rings. We figured he was 9, possibly 10 if he had another annuli near the bases.
Day 5 was going to be a bit more spicey.

*****************

We wake up, grab our gear and head to the glassing location from the previous evening. The 15s are out (Maven and Swaro SLCs). We are both scanning, and seeing nothing. The rams are gone. They had been there the last 2 days. I am confused and bring the binos down and just start looking around us. Down valley, just over 400 yds, something is moving. I thought they were caribou. They were not. It was our rams.
Things speed up from here.

The wind is bad. My effective range is 500 yds with the 308 and the rams are walking away from us. The decision was made to move to a spot closer to the rams.
W were not sure if they winded us or if the sound of the rocks under our feet as we walked spooked them, but when we got to the spot we were aiming for, the rams were gone.

At that point, we had been so close but we were limited by my effective shooting range. I told my hunting partner that if we were given another opportunity at a longer distance that he could take the shot. I wasn't going to make us come home empty just because I thought that the ram was only mine to take.
Heads were down after the failed attempt, but I tossed my binos up and found the rams again, but only for a brief moment. I managed to pick them up again, and figured they were still close enough to make a play now vs. waiting. My partner pointed out an outcropping above the brush and we made a move.
I was watching the rams with binos as we moved closer. At one point, I could see a ram looking our way and told me partner to freeze. He didn't hear me and the rams spotted his movement and bumped further up the mountain. At that point, I felt that they were for sure out of my range. I made the decision to move away from the rams in the open while my partner snuck in to get set up for the shot.

The plan worked. The Rams watched me walk off. They settled down and started feeding again, giving my partner time to set up. 580yds was the reading from the rangefinder.

This trip was both a success and a failure. It was an amazing trip into the mountains with my hunting partner and friend. It was a failure as I felt like I gave up by giving my friend the green light to take a shot. That decision was more about 'us' and less about 'myself', and I think it was the right decision.
It is a trip I will never forget, but one that will tear at my heart strings if the Ministry decides to put Stone Sheep on LEH.

Every resident hunter should have the opportunity to challenge themselves and their hunting abilities in the mountains of Northern BC in pursuit of a Stone Sheep. Poor luck in the LEH draw takes away that opportunity. If sheep populations do in fact need our support in the future, then the Ministry needs to get more creative then using the LEH because I want to go back!!

That's a wonderful write up, thanks for sharing on this site. It's nice to hear your perspective on the hunt. I have heard Devins a couple times on his podcast and on talk is sheep. You're good at writing, hopefully you decide to do a write up like this for that beautiful elk you guys hammered...

Thanks for taking the time to post your story and pics on here. I really enjoyed it especially not being able to chase sheep any more. I know get my hunting kicks vicariously thru others.
Beauty ram! Congrats to you both!

Sheep hunting is teamwork for sure. Let it always be about the team…as you already have done.
Your time will come.
Cheers

Great read and your photos are awesome. Love your perspective on LEH. I don’t like them in their current format. It is taking hunting away from many of us. There are other ways to limit animal takes while allowing us the pleasure of the hunt. It’s the hunt that counts, not the body count.

thanks for the post.

Great write up and photos. I love the character of the horns. Gnarly looking! What was the final consensus on age?

final age was 9. Experienced sheep guide confirmed and local CI made it official.

Well done, great writeup, pics, and congrats to you both on an awesome animal... that hunt was a team effort, it doesn't matter IMO who pulls the trigger, you made the right decision.. I too don't like the thought of LEH, even though I've never hunted sheep, I too believe there's got to be better ways to sustain healthy populations... how heavy were each of your packs on the way out?Cheers...

Well done. That's a beautiful ram. You're to be commended for your perseverance and giving it over to your partner to take a shot you weren't comfortable. Teamwork makes the dream work!

That was a great story. Thanks for sharing. It's hard to hand over a shot for something that you have works hard for. But it shows you have great character and a attitude of a mindful hunter. Imagine if you let greed take over and you took the shot and missed, or wounded the sheep and were unable to recover it... You decision turned a good hunt into a great hunt, which could have easily been a gut-wrenching failed hunt.
