Well as the Fall winds down I finally have some time to share a few stories of our 2023 hunting season. At this point in my hunting career I get just as excited watching my friends and family get their first animals as I do harvesting my own. This year was a year full of firsts and that made it one of my most memorable yet.

It started back in July when the LEH draws came out. I had a horseshoe up my a$$ the two previous years and my group of 4 had drawn November bull moose draws both years. I knew my chances of drawing this year were basically NIL, but they were giving out a whack more tags where we hunt so I had high hopes that someone in my large family would draw a local tag again. I was ecstatic when my sister and her husband informed me that they had pulled the October bull moose tag for an area in region 3 which we have hunted for 3 generations now. We have had the November draw a few times but never October. To my even greater surprise, my brother and my two pals had also drawn in an adjacent unit just across the highway where we have also pulled moose out of over the years. We were back in the game and plans were made for the first 2 weeks of October.

Summer flew by and before we knew it we were packing up and ready to hit the bush for a couple weeks. As we got closer to the date we saw that the weather was supposed to change and get cold right when we were to arrive. It had all the makings of an epic moose hunt. We pulled into camp September 29 and woke up next morning to the first frost of the year. You really can’t beat autumn in moose country.

We have several trail cameras set up in the area so the first couple days were spent checking those and trying to pin down an area that a bull moose was calling home. My sister wasn’t able to come up until the following weekend so the plan was to get two bulls down for my buddies and my brother the first week.

The cameras revealed a handful of small bulls throughout the summer months but nothing impressive and nothing really recent. We were going into opening day without much of a game plan.

Opening morning came and passed and upon returning to camp my two buddies inform my brother and I that they bumped what they think was a bull moose as they were walking into a new cut where the road had been deactivated. The moose was just inside the tree line and all they saw was ass but one of them swore they saw antlers. A look on google earth revealed a nice big patch of mixed old growth bush surrounded by new deactivated cuts which is where the moose went into. We took two bulls the year prior just on the other side of this patch, only 2km away. We made a plan for the evening.

Neither of my two buddies have taken a moose before so my brother took one and I took the other. The plan was to get one in their sights. My one buddy and I were cruising the side by side burning daylight before we headed into our evening spot and we parked the machine and hiked up a knoll to view the back side of a cut block and let a couple cow calls fly. Nobody home so after 30
mins we turn around and start heading back to the side by side. All of a sudden I look up and see a dark object moving at the very far side of the cut block. I can see it’s a bull moose with the naked eye. He had a nice wide rack on him but with skinny paddles. We would gladly take him. The excitement grew as we speed walked down the old logging road towards where we last saw him.

We set up and glass. We instantly see movement on a hill about 500 yards away and are amazed at how far he made it in such short time. He was cruising Lookin for love for sure. I let out a long cow call. He stops in his tracks and looks at us. We walk up a bit and range him at 467yds staring right at us. Not a shot to take. I whisper to my buddy to get set up for a shot and I’m going to call the bull to us. I cow call and he starts back down the hill, right towards us! I can see the excitement in my buddies eyes. Unfortunately we’re in the middle of a cut so he lays down and rests on a rock as that is all that’s available. I would have to call the bull down the hill and across a ravine that stood between us, then up the hill on our side into our view. I kept calling as we kept seeing glimpses of him working his way towards us. Then we go a few minutes without seeing him. Must be in the ravine. All of a sudden I feel the most discouraging thing a hunter can feel as the wind swirls and hits our necks going right towards the bull. We never saw him again even though we spent the remainder of our evening there. We still felt good that the rut was on and we had an opportunity on day one. This is the cut block we saw him in

Up well before dark again on October 2. My buddy and I went for a walk along a chain of 5 meadows within close proximity of where we saw the bull the night prior. We put in a solid shift calling and walking those meadows, even checking a trail camera I had in one of them and nothing. We concluded that bull was on the move and had travelled in and out of that country.

Curiosity got us as we head back towards camp and we take a walk down a deactivated road to the cuts on other side of the patch of bush the boys saw a moose morning one. The deactivations are huge and nobody is hunting back there. We get to the tree line of the first cut and find what we are looking for …

https://i.postimg.cc/gkWMT34m/E49-A15-B6-9-F25-4186-96-E5-E88-DFC82-F199.jpg (https://postimg.cc/RqgQ36jD)

There was several piles of moose crap and another couple small fresh rubs just inside the tree line. It was now mid afternoon and fairly warm so we decided to back out and come back in for the evening hunt.

ElliotMoose
12-03-2023, 09:40 PM
We cooked up a big lunch, packed a couple sandwiches and we were back out. We parked the side by side at the deactivation and made our way down the reclaimed road to the cut block. We came into the block and I picked out a nice log pile about 150 yards from the tree line that I thought would be a good spot to sit and call and hopefully pull the bull out of the patch of timber for a shot. We sat for 5 minutes before I let out a call sequence. We sat still and listened for 20 minutes. Nothing. At this time my buddy looks at me and says “I’ll tell you right now I can’t sit still for 2 hours until dark.” With that comment, we threw our packs on and said f@&k it, let’s get in there.

We hit the tree line and the wind is perfect. We start slowly creeping our way through the mixed old growth, stopping to call every so often. While travelling the old moose trail we come across another beauty rub that looks like it was made last year.

https://i.postimg.cc/L5y4WLwD/B3-DEE7-D9-2-AA6-4-F30-9-E58-F7-BE1-C19-E8-CB.jpg (https://postimg.cc/jn7rwwsn)

As we continue picking through we come to a nice spot where the poplars allow you to see 60-70 yards in a couple directions. I let a cow call go. This time I hear a noise a couple hundred yards off. It almost sounds like a dog bark. My buddy looks at me and says “what is that?” I tell him “get your gun ready. That could be a bull!” I have heard moose make some weird sounds especially when the noise is travelling through thick bush. We sit in silence and as it gets closer there is no mistake, we have a bull moose coming in HOT. My buddy sets up in a shooting lane. I turn around and call behind me to hopefully drag the bull right past us. The bull gets the script and comes right for us, crashing bush the whole way. All of a sudden he pops up into view at 25 yards. My buddy lets the .270 talk. The bull stands there and my buddy puts another one in him. I see the bull stagger and all of a sudden I just see legs in the air. BULL DOWN we both shout. Not seconds later I get a call from my brother. They were hunting the other side of the patch 1km away and heard the gun shots and even heard us scream bull down. We give them a supply list from camp and tell them where we’re at. We’re 2km from the side by side and it’s getting dark fast. It’s going to be a long night! The smile on my buddies face says it all. A beauty first bull.

10 minutes after the shot the skies open up and it starts pouring. All we can do is smile as we have a sip of fireball and reminisce on what just took place. Reinforcements arrive and we get to work on the bull.

My brother and I cut the animal up while our buddies made a first trip to the machines. It was a long, wet, miserable pack out but I swear we smiled that whole damn time. We finally made it back to the side by side with the last load at about 1AM and headed back to camp. Bull down on day 2 and were just getting started. TO BE CONTINUED……

Alright, so. October 3rd was a well deserved sleep in after being up until 3AM getting the meat back to camp and on the pole. Nothing like having your morning (afternoon) coffee at the hangin pole picking hairs.

https://i.postimg.cc/RFcjWzLH/AA3-B6854-9473-415-F-AA5-E-875-B49-A610-E8.jpg (https://postimg.cc/FdHP68qr)

We decided that night would be a road hunting night as we were all pretty spent. One man stayed at camp and the other 3 of us went for a cruise to an area with a vast road density that had burned a few years prior where we have seen some big Mule deer, but still might have a chance at a lucky moose. We were all in sweat pants and flannels, not really prepared to get out for a hike but hey you can’t shoot one from bed.

We quickly notice the amount of traffic in the area as we seem to pass vehicles every couple minutes. I notice a herd of black angus cattle grazing off in the burn that had me fooled for a split second before we saw how many there were.

As we continue down the well travelled road not 200 yards past the cattle, you can see into a meadow through the burnt timber. There’s a black body standing in the middle. “Damn cattle” I say to my buddy and my brother. I put the binos on it just to be 100% sure and wouldn’t you know it, it’s a moose! My brother looks through his binos and neither of us see antlers so we continue to glass around the animal to see if there are more. By this time a vehicle is behind us watching this play out.

We can’t see another animal but I keep looking back at this “cow” just standing there staring at us. Something about this animals stature just said “bull” to me. We bust out the spotting scope and once it turns its head sure as shit it’s a small 3x3 bull whose antlers were so small they went right in line with the white ridges on his ears. My buddy jacks a shell and tries to find a rest. There is nothing much to rest on so we creep our way forward until we’re about 120 yards away. The bull is now aware of us creeping closer and looks as though he’s about to bolt. My buddy lifts his rifle freehand and let’s one fly

ElliotMoose

The bull humps up like he’s been hit. All of a sudden lead is flying. This is my buddies first big game animal in the scope and he got a little excited. As the moose takes off for the back end of the meadow a cow and calf join him. We head into the meadow to look for blood.

We get to the spot we think he was standing and nothing. We spend the next 2 hours walking his escape route and still find nothing. My buddy is discouraged and I tell him misses are a part of hunting and I bet next time he’ll wait until he has a good rest. As the light faded we headed back to camp a little sulky. My buddy said he wanted to return in the morning and we all agreed we should put in a solid full morning so we sat around the table that night planning on google earth and mapped out a good approach that would cover that whole area. The area was an hour from our camp so it would be an early morning.

We get to the spot before first light and it’s a perfect morning. We split up and head to our spots we discussed the night prior. We walked all over that country, stopping to call in several spots and found no sign of the bull. We swallowed the tough pill that he had gotten away unscathed. This is the area we were hunting :

We returned to camp and went back to the drawing board over lunch. It’s always a crappy feeling letting a chance like that slip away, but it was still only day 4 and so far we had seen a bull a day. I reminded my buddy of this and he remained in good spirits.

Originally I had planned for us to go back into the mountains with the side by sides halfway through our hunt and set up a spike camp in a valley I knew produced moose. Only thing was it can be a popular spot. We decided to go and check it out that evening and see how much traffic was in the area before committing to a spike camp. We loaded our packs and some grub into the trucks and headed for the mountains in the north part of our region.

ElliotMoose

The valley I want to hunt is about 8km long and goes from one lake to another with poplar covered hillsides on both sides and a creek running down the middle connecting the lakes. The creek goes through the nastiest, swampiest muskeg area that the moose just seem to love. There is a road on both sides of the creek running the length of the valley. My brother was to drive the north side in his truck and we would hunt the south side. We would only be 700 yards or so from each other on either side of the creek and swamp.

We get nestled in and I start to call. It’s still pretty warm out so we let the calls marinate for an hour or so before trying again. Miraculously we had service in this valley which we never have before. Must be a new cell tower in the area. An hour and a half into our sit, my brother texts the group chat saying he’s got a bull grunting in the poplars high above him. I’m sitting on the opposite hillside while our two buddies are down below on the edge of the swamp/creek bed. The bull my brother has going won’t come down the hill and all of a sudden the boys text me saying they’ve got one going in the creek as well. I start to hear it faintly. Now the one up top goes crazy and is grunting every second or two and snapping trees that echo down the whole valley like a thunder clap. What a rush, this is what moose hunting is all about!

We play cat and mouse while I continue to give the sluttiest cow calls I’ve got, hoping to either pull the bull down the hillside to my brother or to fire up the one in the creek enough that he popped out for one of my buddies down below. This goes on for over an hour until my brother makes the call to head up the hill towards the bull up high as he texts me to keep calling. About 10 minutes later the silence is broken by the unmistakable sound of the 300WM…

After the first shot I whisper yelled (yes, whisper yell, it’s a thing) “COME ON” to myself. 20 seconds go by. BANG. Another shot rings out. By this time my two buddies have emerged from the creek bottom and started walking up to the road where I’m standing calling. As soon as they make it up to the road we hear a 3rd shot. “BULL DOWN” echoes from across the valley. My two buddies and I yell from our side and can’t believe what just happened. We worked that area like a tactical unit and now we’ve got bull number two down on day 4. We can’t wait to see what he looks like but we’ve still got a 45 min hike to the truck and then a half hour drive all the way around the valley even though we were less than 1km from my brother. We arrive to his truck to see him sitting on the tailgate grinning ear to ear eating a mountain house meal. After a quick BS re-capping the story we throw the packs on and begin our ascent up the steep embankment and then up the hillside. About 30 mins after we leave the truck we make it to the bull and I am blown away. A beautiful animal and a fine example of a high country southern interior bull moose. Admired him for a bit as we took in the fresh mountain air and then took a few photos. He went 46” on the tape.

As they say “now the work begins.”. Those are the pack outs that stick with you forever. We started cutting him into pieces making trips down to the truck and back. We strapped the last load on our backs at 1:30AM and still had over an hour drive to camp after we got to the trucks.

The next day was a well deserved camp day. We cleaned meat, drank whiskey, played loud music, had a big fire and had a feast of bacon wrapped moose tenderloin with all the fixins that night. The boys would head home the next morning and my brother and I would have one days rest before my sister came up that Saturday. The meat pole looked mighty lonely after they left.

We normally go up for November 1st to hunt spike forks but seeing as I already had a half a moose coming my way I decided to not hunt the spike fork season. Instead I went back up mid November for one last kick at the can to fill my whitetail tag. I would have my sister along with me as well as my 8 year old nephew who had never been part of a harvest before. We had a couple quick chances at small bucks where we couldn’t get a shot off in time and then on the second and last morning of our two day hunt I managed to pull the trigger on this little guy in a small poplar stand where I have shot 3 other bucks now. My nephew got his hands right in there and it’s safe to say we have another one addicted. A pretty perfect ending to an already incredible season! Cheers to all and happy hunting

Thanks Elliot for sharing.

Sandwiches are probably one of the best lunches a guy can have out there I think, fills the spot after hikin hard.

Funny you say that it almost sounded like a dog barked, last year I killed a Wolf while hunting Elk. Then a couple weeks later I was bugling and raking and then all of a sudden I heard what I thought was dogs barking and I thought there is more Wolves and got ready. Then listened to crashing like a train coming through the timber for 2 minutes thinking it was a Bull Elk that had lost his voice trying to chuckle, well it ended up being a large Bull Moose that came into raking and Elk calls (actually posted about it last year) was a really cool experience and reminded me of what you explained. Actually sounded like there was one behind me in addition to the one that came right in to 30 yards infront of me, almost like I was in the middle.

Your buddys young Bull looks like a super healthy one! Thanks for taking the time for posting all the pics and the story, and good on ya for gettin the young guy out along for the WT. And I agree f**k fb and these other sites, this is our home and we should be filling this site with hunting content not others, for any competent person posting pictures and stories on here is nothing as long as one has a little bit of free time to do so.

Question, what is the hole in the 2nd Bulls nose (nice Bull btw), that a bullet or unknown?

I have heard that barking noise from a bull moose on more than one occasion now! First time was up in the middle of nowhere pink mountain and I thought what the hell is a dog doing way out here. Next think you know a bull (not legal unfortunately) started walking across the meadow in front of us grunting the whole way.

The hole in that bulls nose was my brothers second shot. He knew he hit him on the first shot but the bull stopped and gave him a look at his head right before disappearing into the willows so he let him have it in the beak. The bull stood there dazed for a few seconds and a third shot tipped him over

Wonderful story and photos Elliot, nothing more satisfying than hunting with family and friends. It’s great when you can do it on big bodied animals with big challenges as it really boosts the comradey and also if it annual as you really get to something look forward to and planning for. Congrats to all the hunters.
Open sites lever gun, got to love it. Thanks for posting!
