I've never found any natural licks and don't know if there are certain geographical features where you would find them like a creek bed or what have you. This looks weird and eroded to me, its not a creek though obviously, there are game trails that lead to it and creeks close by if I remember correctly on either side not far at all. There were tons of tracks in it which is what got me thinking, but with streams right there they obviously wouldnt drink that muddy puddle.

What do you think have any natural licks youve found looked like this?

Looks a lot like the natural licks I hunt. Good find!

Nice find, the only natural lick I found once had more iron content in it....

Did you notice any hoofy prints around it? Can't really tell from the pics.

Looks like a water source , a seep or spring
One pic shows it running down slope a ways?
doesn't look like much old disturbance, maybe someone had placed a salt block at one time?

Agree here. More than likely someone had a block there for a while. There are a ton of sites like this in the forest. Hunters are often quite active in putting down attractants. There are more partial and full on licks out there than one realizes.

Looks like an ephemeral stream to me; a water course only active during snow melt runoff or heavy rains. When it dries up the suspended particles are left on the ground.

The ground there doesn't really show it, there are trails leading to it, but all those small imprints you see inside are tracks. Something is attracting them right inside of it

Thats why I was there looking for Elk/sign. Called a Bull in weeks before probably ~6km away but for that area and mountain right there very very low Elk sign, almost all Deer. All the wallows I find in this country havent looked like this at all though

Yeah its running down the slope a little bit, and I thought of this could be a lick station set up by hunter. Nobody camming it though looked high and low all around in every tree, doesnt mean they aint but if I had one goin i'd be cammin

I never said Elk wouldnt drink it, I was actually referring to Deer when I said that and I don't believe Deer would, being there are two clear streams right there.

I know Elk are cool, but I also know they are some of the most foul and disgusting animals in North America during their rut.

Only thing it’s missing is a stampede of tracks. The one I found is just pounded with elk and moose tracks old and fresh. It’s hard to say

Elk and Moose in the unit, but mostly just Deer in this area. I'll hang a cam in the spring too see

I’d carry in 2 of 40 lbs bag of granual cattle salt, works way better than blocks and help them out they will keep coming

^^ however, something to think about. If you use blocks, on a new site, and you put up cameras, if you aren't getting a hit (few animals coming in), then you can pick up the block and move it somewhere else. Once you establish a lick that attracts animals, you can do whatever you want. Provided you are in an area that supports the placement of attractants.
