A group of us have successfully received a moose draw for November 1-15 in MU 5-01. As the area is new to all of us (but 1 who hunted there last year for his first time ever), we are hoping to get advice from any members willing to share moose information in this area. I have a group of friends who have hunted the areas for years but they were always late September hunters and this is a new time and likely no rut to call them with. We are staying at Halfway Lake and appreciate any "tips" on moose in the area. Also if there are suggestions for deer if the moose doesn't pan out we are open for advice on them as well.

cheers Steve

That is a pretty tough draw. It is post rut which is when all the bulls hole up and don’t move much. We did manage to fill our two tags with that draw last year but they were the only two bulls we saw in 14 days of hard hunting with 4 guys. Focus on areas with ample feed and water close by and pray the weather is cold as that gives them a nudge that it’s time to pack on weight for winter, which makes them move from food source to food source.

A plus side is that bulls tend to group up at that time of year and it is not uncommon to see multiple bulls hanging out together.

Couldn’t get our gang together for the earlier draws so here we go on it. We hope to have similar success to you and hope weather and animals work with us. Just hoping to get some advice on where to focus our attention initially.

Also did you see any whitetails at all there then? They are an added bonus on any hunt

Moose generally live within a 15k radius the plateau near my house with the highest density they do not move at all...get out there for a fishing trip and find some animals at the same time before season..find food sources... then plan on booking the whole two weeks even go early and try to find them in advance...i would expect a very low whitetail population in the moose habitat of that region.

Thanks for your reply. Might not be able to make a fishing trip but are planning on being up there early to scout around. Weather may define our options a bit but we are prepared to work the area over. Looking forward to exploring the area.

Day 1 of our hunt and while the weather is less than ideal for reading sign we did see a cow and a calf and a single cow today. Saw a different cow and calf yesterday as well. We are piling on the miles in our side by side learning the area better but it’s a big area. If anyone has any recent sightings of animals a private message is appreciated.
cheers Steve

hmmmm its now grass...not ass..rut is over..FOOD...THEY WILL bed down just inside the timber...less wind...= warmer= less energy expended...they will make beeline from bedding to food source..again less energy consumption....look for willow close to bedding area...its supposed to snow tonight in Caiboo..10 cm...will show tracks =movement....food + bedding...thats it...
if cold they will stand at treeline in first light..
where moose were in Sept is different than oct rut AND november FEEDING/BEDDING..
good luck

Steven

Interested to see how you make out. We were up last weekend and there was very little movement. For a bit of inspiration, here are the two bulls we took for that same draw. It was -17 for the first one and -24 for the second. Made for some chilly pack outs!

Nice animals. My friend filled his tag here last year on a solo hunt. At 65 it almost killed him. It was -20 when he got his and he’s with me on this hunt but the conditions are radically different. We are hunting hard each day but have only seen a few cows and calf’s. Each day out early and covering lots of ground

Could you please send us a little if that snow that was supposed to come so we can find some fresh tracks. The fog today in particular made todays hunt a bit more difficult.

hmmm...lack of snow makes finding feeding moose tough..as does fog...however the REALLY warm temps really throws a wrench into the works.
3 temp/outlooks sites predicted the temp and snow....and have been pretty damn reliable..
this time no snow not even the freezing rain prediction early in the AM...
i even put out the snow shovel for Susans use...love the warmer than normal temps....easier on the heating bills.

moose STILL consume 40 pounds of grub each day..that amount takes several outings.
