Fished a mountain lake in the cowichan valley last weekend and we caught 4 trout. All about the same 10-12" size, but one, caught on the deep side of the lake, was VERY dark, purple ish colored. All catch and release, and foolishly didn't take pictures, but was wondering if anyone has any light to shed on why we would see such a drastic difference in appearance.

It could be that they are in the spawning mode, but I don't know if they spawn in these lakes.
If it's a put in lake they could be triploids (infertile).
I depends on the lake.
But I would say it's more about what they eat and where they live.
I don't know if there is still a lake in BC that is fully natural.
Often fish that are just released and been fed on pellets, appear darker.

A couple of pothole lakes iv cut trails into out north west of PG have dark trout but you give em a little scrub and they turn silver. At first I thought they were going to taste muddy but they were good eating.

I have red that trout will go a darker colour when they are stressed. Like spawning time or warm water.

Mr Bartell's dark fish there looks very similar. Don't think this lake has been stocked for at least 15 years, if it ever was. We're gonna head up this weekend again and try to get to got to another lake in the area. Be interesting to see what the fish there look like in comparison.

Fish in the other lake looked the same.

Was a dandy of a day.

There are a couple of lakes or groups of lakes on the Bonaparte plateau that have dark water and the fish are dark coloured also.

These ones are very clear. We were watching fish on the bottom in 20' of water yesterday.
