Looking to increase my chances of seeing spring grizzlies in Region 8 this weekend. Specific locations would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply. I’m in the outskirts of Kelowna toward Lake Country. I’m making a drive down to Osooyos on Friday though so I could really make it out most places in Region 8 this weekend.

Seen a few over the years up on the Aberdeen Lake plateau area, be aware of the snow pack as it is usually pretty deep still.

Lots of heat this week should get them out of bed
Food is still scarce though,no dandelions or cabbage out yet

Generally, look to the northeast portion of the region.

Grandby, has lots. I've been told you can see them on the slopes of big white in spring, not sure of this but Grandby I am sure of.

Pretty much what everyone else said: East or North East areas of Region 8

North-End of Christian Valley (e.g. Grandby)
Greenbrush Lake
Mount Beaven
Twin Lakes
Bunchgrass FSR

I feel like grizzly are like moose. There's more in the Okanagan than people think.
Focus on the best feed areas, and tend to push the elevation as high as snow levels will allow, and you'll either find grizzly or large black bears.

Granby. If snow will allow. Lynch creek, All those new burns in there. Almond creek is usually good for a grizz or 2. Head up over Traverse to Thone lake and into Christian valley. You get high enough there, should be able to glass and pick one out. Go for a hike up to the blue joint lookout, another good spot to put the glass to work.

As others have said, east and northeast areas of region 8. But, you aren’t going to be getting too far up any FSR’s this weekend asides from those that were plowed for hauling.

Most people would be surprised at the number of grizzlies within 30 minutes of Kelowna. One of my hunting partners has property a short ways up Goudie Rd and has several showing up regularly throughout spring/summer/fall. This is 15 minutes from Rutland.

One was shot by a cat hunter near James Lake and there are numerous sightings around there each year.

For purely a gbear viewing experience, tough to beat the BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops, almost guaranteed

I took a couple of new hunters to an older clear-cut ridge near Niles Lake in October of 2013. We hiked to the saddle of the ridge and climbed into a wooden tree stand that my son had constructed a few years earlier. We had a good vantage point 12 feet above the ground. Once up, I raised my binoculars and scanned the area. Something caught my eye immediately... about 500 yards away was this beautiful, glistening silvertipped grizzly turning over stumps and foraging. We watched him for 10 minutes before we lost him in the underbrush. We had set up for an evening hunt and I decided that there was no way I wanted the two 18-year-old novice hunters to have a grizzly encounter in the darkness. We left the hill. There there are most
certainly grizzly in Region 8-5.

Saw two grizz near Princeton last year. One galloped across a huge clear cut at an alarming rate. About an hour later in the same area I saw a herd of about 15 elk. Another one I encountered at about 75 yards away while calling in an elk. He heard the conversation and wanted dinner. That was intense.

I had a very close face to face encounter with one up behind my house last spring and saw very large bear tracks up Bata FSR a couple of weeks ago. The front tracks were just about as wide as my size 9 hiking boot and had that turned in Grizzly gait to them. You don't need to go far to see them, they're around here for sure.

Exactly as stated above . Sow with two to three cubs up back end of Bert ( off Whipsaw Kennedy ) almost every year .
