My Brother in Law drew the region B tag for Bison for the Nov 25-Dec 5 season. His father, and brother accompanied us on this hunt. We arranged to stay with Mike and Dixie Hammett from Sikanni River outfitters in one of their cabins,

We left last tuesday, and after a few tire failures on our trailer, we made it to the lodge Wed night. Conditions were cold, minus 25 - with very little snow on the ground. Most guys were using quads to get around, as were we. I had brought 1 sled just in case, but we never used it,

There were 3 other groups of resident Bison Hunters staying at the lodge, and one group in a wall tent camped out in the cold. We used the 1st day to get aqainted to the area having never been there before. With the low snow conditions, the Bison were up in the trees, and quite wary from what we were told,

One group of residents had been there for 6 days, and only saw their 1st Bison on Day 6. This was a major change from last year we were told. These guys went home without a bison,

On the second day, we hunted towards Marion Lake, and after seeing some fresh sign, we split up and started to walk. I had been walking for only 10 minutes, when I heard my BIL shoot. A group of Bison had walked out of the trees to them, and at 65 yards he killed his 1st ever Big game animal. 1 shot with a 300 WSM through the lungs, and it was all over, and the work began. We skinned it out, and then cut it half and loaded it all into my Rhino,

It was a great time, and the people at Sikanni river are top notch!

Thanks to Bc Rams, Thuderstix and David Heitsman for their info and assistance,

It is unlawful to hunt Bison with bullets under the weight of 175grains. Not that it matters now, but your BIL harvested his bison unlawfully according to the British Columbia hunting regulations.

Congrats to you guys! Looks like a great family hunt! Wow one shot with a 300 wsm:eek:. I have heard stories of guys with bigger guns needing way more than 1 shell! Way to go. It is going to be fine table fare.

Congrats, that's a nice animal.
Did he run a bit after the shot, or did it drop on the spot?

My parents just did up a roast this weekend from my bison, and everyone there were raving about how good it was. Enjoy & congrats!!! BTW, the bullet didn't fair so well by the looks of it.

Excellent Bison, very impressive for first big game animal..I'm sure the excitement is just wearing off...
Nice to see it was shot at 65 yards and not 200 yards. I doubt if a longer shot would have been a clean kill...
Enjoy the table fair....I hope the head is getting mounted, its not every day you get to harvest a bison...
