Went out for a little hunt this evening and came across 2 of these rare Region 3 critters. Both bulls are 6X6's. Spotted them at 100 yards and was able to crawl up to 25 yards and snap a few pics.

Fisherdude,
Nope, not a huntable population. There was an open season years ago, but I doubt we'll ever see an open season again. A few years ago the elk foundation was looking at doing some transplants but had to jump through way too many ministry hoops. The excuse was that it would just be a feeding program for the wolves.

I took this pic this past May. I would imagine it is one of the bulls I saw this evening. I'm thinking it is the smaller of the 2.

There never was a huntable population a few years back in the interior of BC (Prince George and area). There sure is now and more elk are showing up in places they never were before every year!

Elk are like a bad weed. Eventually there will be enough elk running that country to have a season! What we don't know is -- how long, whether it will be 5, 10, 15, 20 or more yrs from now.

Those are nice bulls you took photos of!

Dam wolves ,thin them out and let the elk populate in areas that have good habitat and can carry them. I wish i would have seen one of them two elk in the EK this year ,one of the two would be in my freezer. Great snap shots ,thanks for posting them.

Great pics! You did well to get so close. I love it when new critters come to town. This June I saw a Whitetail in my M.U. a first that I have ever seen in my 35 years.

I'm guessing that there were no whities out and about? Nice pics though, were they further down the valley again?

Last year when we ran into you guys out there they were right above where we were cruising.

OT,
Never saw a whitey although lots of sign in those new blocks that you cruised last year.

Mikek,
I'm using an Olympus SP-55OUZ. It's a point and shoot camera with 18x optical zoom and 7.1 MP. I really love it.
Here's some more pics from it to show what the camera is capable of doing. These pics are probably at about 75 yards. They have been cropped.

That one elk on the left looks like he really rutted hard ,his back is curved down ,that's a sign of age and a loss of body weight. Thanks for posting the elk ,i made the two in the pic as desk top back ground , as them being my favorite animal to hunt ,Thanks.http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

Nice pics, as for spreading elk seem to be very adaptive and seem to thrive in most areas, I know in the lower mainland they used to be quite plentifull in the chilliwack valley and then they were gone?? Now people are starting to have sightings again as well as road collisions, wonder if they get lungworm or something that decimates them for awhile??
