was simply recognizing the fact that given my access and limitations, I am very unlikely to ever see a nice whitey like that one; let alone cap it

It's a nice deer, and will taste great. Congratulations FSJ.

As for young, it depends on your definition. The average life span for a white tail buck is 4.5 years, does love longer, and of course that is an average. I would guess that buck is 3.5 and would have peaked next fall. I wouldn't consider that a young deer but a deer entering his prime. Doesn't matter though; it's a really nice deer taken in a perfect whitetail habitat. Will be some big ones around for a while.

Nice buck! That is called grocery shopping!! I'd shoot a buck like that every year if I could! Thats some of the best eating around!!! Congratulations! Hopefully helped rekindle the passion for hunting? Moosin

Nice FSJhunter, you will see a big one tomorrow and all you can do is take a picture and wish him well. Lol
I found the rut this year in the peace was just crazy, bucks standing around or running around in broad daylight for about 2.5 weeks now. Dead bucks in the ditch along all the main hwys. Can’t say there was more than usual for deer as I have 11 cams and 9 years of data up here but they just lost their brains this year. I found everything this year also was fat, fat, fat and real good eating.

All good
knowing bucks like this are out there is what keeps the drive alive for me
I know there is one where I go that is better than my PB, so still trying

Nice buck! I’d take him in a heartbeat..( being on the island,I just wish I knew where to go)
Question- if we would choose a steer of that age over a tough old bull for prime steaks, then why would we pass up on a ‘young deer’? Can’t eat antlers…

Guess that will be BCHunterFSJ’s last buck. Only talked to him a few times via pm, but he was a good guy.

Victor Plotnikow, longtime North Peace Rod and Gun Club Member and supporter, avid angler, hunter and outdoors-man passed on February 1, 2023. The club would like to express its heart-felt condolences to the Plotnikow family and to Vic's many friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Victor on Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at The Lido Theatre.

I feel much the same.
I was right startled to read of his passing, simply thought it was another commenting on his post.
Still shaking my head.

He certainly came across as a very fine Fellow here, and although I never did meet him, I was hoping our paths would cross one day. Guess now if they do it will be on the other side...

RIP Sir.

Sadly,
Matt

Vic was definitely an outdoors enthusiast and and avid angler and hunter. When they first moved to FSJ from Quebec to teach at the high school, he of course wasn't able to hunt that fall because of residency requirements. When he found out I was going looking for deer he always asked to tag along. One afternoon in September after work (I had a LEH mule deer tag for an early season they had at that time) he came along with another friend and me — we saw something like 26 bucks all together in a field, with four whoppers — Vic was beside himself — unfortunately we did not have permission to hunt on this land (nobody did) so all we could do was admire from a distance. Vic went on to be a dedicated hunter going out at every opportunity.
