Proguide66 and I went out for a "last chance" hunt for blacktails in Region 2 today. Today was the 2nd to last day of the season. I played hookey from work, so did he. Both of us had already got reasonably nice deer so, we decided that 'any decent buck" was on the menu.

We went to a popular wintering ground area, zipped up on the quad together (I was on the back, so we did lots of wheelies) Then disembarked and headed into thick timber. Our plan was for Steve to take the left, and hunt up a small finger ridge, I'd take the right and be down below. We hoped that deer would be between us, and at the very least, one woudl push deer to the other.

We set off and I zagged when I should have zigged, then a few minutes later heard a muffled boom! Steve had shot a nice blacktail, and the rest of the gang had run off- Right to where I was supposed to be!!!

We met up ,and checked out Steves nice last minute buck.

Please note the snow camo. Some English tourist woman accosted us at the gas station, demanding to know where she coudl get such stylish attire!! I shit you not!!

Tomorrow is the last day of the season..Steve will be going to work...I called my sous chefs and told them I am going hunting!

PS let me know if you can only see red X's for pics...Ddn't use regular pic host...

BTW For the ballisticians..

Steve had a quick shot at 70 yards through a "thread the needle" opening, at a quartering away animal. He was using his 300RUM, with my handloads of 180gr TSX bullets at 3250fps. The hit was behind the ribs, and the 180gr TSX plowed through to the vitals, and the bullet was recovered on the farside chest/neck area.

About 2 foot of deer penetration at close range, and the recovered bullet looks liek a TSX ad, except the ends of the petals curled up, as to be expected with a hit at such high velocity. Looks like 100% weight retention.

I was happy he wasnt' using his 243 with Ballistic tips.

I went out today for the last chance to hunt in this area (why does region 3, 20 minutes up the road get to hunt until Dec 10 and we close on Nov 30 anyway?):(

I parked the truck, walked up the road and then trudged into the trees and headed up a ridge, going slow. Lots of deer sign. Wihtin 100 steps, I ran into a 2 pt. He didn't see me so I let him go in his way. (A minute later, some hunter on a quad putted past but of course didn't see me or the buck...what is that they say about getting off the road?)8)

I kept going, and then saw a 3pt, pretty nice one, too. I let him slip past and then kept heading up the ridge. Pretty soon I spooked a doe, and she bounced away. I waited ot see if there was a buck, but none turned up. About 30 minutes later, I looked across a depression and there was a decent 4 pt, 150 yards away. I could only see his neck and head and a wee bit of his body, through the thick cover. I was quite pissed at myself for leaving my Leica binos on the dashboard at this point, since I was trying to asess the buck through a 1-5X leupold scope, which is a great aiming devie but a crappy spotting scope!

He didn't look like a huge 4pt, but I would have shot him earlier on in the season, but witha bunch of meat already I wasn't going to pack out anything but a real big one. I tried to get closer for better viewing, but he busted me and slipped away.

By this time I was near the top, and ran into the last deer of the day, a heavy 2 pt, bedded down 50 yards from me. He wasn't that concerned about me, and only left when I sat down to eat some lunch.

The sun was shining, the air was crisp and cold, and I could see majestic Mt Currie across the valley. What a wonderful day to be out hunting the last day of the season in beautiful British Columbia.:-D
