I'd let the little guy grow, give him a couple years and he'll be a hog!

He was the best Whitey I saw this year, had it been a full rack, he would have gone down. I watched him for about 45 minutes in total, a doe had his undivided attention. My freezer was almost jam packed, so I decided to pass on him. Saw lots of good bucks, tons of dinks, but if I was gonna buy another freezer, he had to be relatively big. He will be bigger next year . Saw 2 other bucks with busted off tines in the same area, so they must've been having some fun!!

I'm right in the middle of BBQing a couple of steaks from a whitey I took last year about that same size. It's so tender, the fork slips out when I try to lift them off the grill. So, I'd pop him!

If your freezer is full, however, and you don't think you can use the meat, then passing on him may be the better option.

Nice when its a great rack.... but..... most of the time it seems I need the meat so the hammer would have probably fallen. Nice big bodied whitetail though and I'm glad he's probably still out there.

Nice buck but I would have let him walk, had to let a good mulie walk this year too because of a broken mainbeam so I know I could do it.

If you had his horns on your wall, every dick head that walked into the room, the first words out of his mouth would be "Be nice if he had 2 horns EH!!" What, did you hit him with your "Truck!!!" No, i'd let him go, maybe next year try to find him again. It would give you some thing to look forward to!

I'd have to have an empty freezer and have it being the last hour, last day to shoot him.

i would of hamerd him, but then he turned; I still would of shot him.

ha ha, exactly what went through my head. Whenever I get out for Whitetails its for a meat buck only...maybe that's why I haven't ever seen a whitetail (while hunting) that's any bigger than that one?

Wildman
11-30-2007, 04:30 PM
Yup, I would have taken him.

If I still had a tag to fill and it would be the last day of the season he would be down for the count.

A wise man said once; “Never pass up the first day what you end up shooting on the last day.”

Glad you let him walk... leaves him out there for me! Swoosh <sound of arrow> Thawack <sound of arrow hitting that beauty>. Maybe trophy hunters should all take up bow hunting exclusively... LOL

kennyj
11-30-2007, 06:23 PM
Nope! I'd let him go.Maybe see him next year with both horns.

LeverActionJunkie
12-01-2007, 12:00 AM
If I can get a whitetail to hang around that long this year.....Bang for sure I need more meat and since I'm not a squirrel I wouldn't starve on account of the missing antler.

12-03-2007, 10:39 AM
thats it i need a new area to hunt! I have never seen a whitey hang around even just to get my gun to my shoulder. I've seen big ones and small ones but anything with 4 points would vanish in seconds. Put it this way, I would only have seen that he had bone and I would have pulled the trigger.

Tikka7mm

Pretty tough call. I believe in Karma so if my freezer is full he walks; empty and he's down for sure....but a nice deer anyways. Hopefully you'll get a shot at him next year.

I'm a meat hunter and anything that is legal as long as it has some size to the animal ,down it goes ,can't eat antlers.
