I don't guide professionally i just like helping first time sheep hunters as well i have several seasoned sheep hunting buddies that i hunt with. Having said that most of my hunts are solo sheep hunts . i have my pilots license so i would either fly in then back pack or get dropped off by jet boat or pack in with my horses although i havent used horses for a few years mostly in by plane. this year going in with a buddy sept 6 by plane and from the gravel bar its a full 2 day hike in to where we are going after some big sheep. we will split up for 3 or 4 days at a time then hook up again and do this over a period of a few weeks. Whether we connect or not its still a thrill for me to be in the mountains. and i have quite a high standard before i pull the trigger so more likely not if i get a ram but i will see plenty of legal rams where i go.
Man your speaking my language! I understand your apprehension in posting your personal pictures such as these so want to thank you again for doing so. They are unreal. Good luck on your upcoming hunt. If you ever have some spare time and feel inclined to tell a few stories about any of your pictures I (and I’m sure many of us) would love to hear them.

You must have past up some nice elk/moose etc. to keep the focus on sheep in that country you are in!

Incredible batch of photos!! Thanks for sharing :) I can relate to the solo hunting, it really adds to the experience and memory’s. What plane are you flying?? A PPL is very high on my list of things to accomplish, along with a plane on floats. Couple more years I’ll have my ducks in a row to get after it.

ive had a few planes over the years pa11 , super cub, super bushmaster on tundras and floats but currently have a pa24 260 b

Some exciting times!! A super cub would have to be my dream plane, perhaps one day. The Pipers seem to be a good way to get introduced at not a bad price, but are a bit trickier to land Iv read. My neighbour had a pa-11, iirc, with a bunch of mods on floats. It was a fun little unit. I got him on one sheep hunt with it, unfortunately it wasn’t his cup of tea lol. The mountain flying was a little out of his element.

1 week out from a fishing trip by beaver, can’t help but giggle like a little kid at that sound!

Lots of variation in color in stone sheep, but i prefer them when there hides are Dark (black) really makes the white stand out
When i worked in the Muskwa /prophet area it had some very dark sheep and the later in the season the better. You have taken

The months are ticking away till sheep season. Started my exercise regime 2 mile walks with 20 pound pack for next 2 weeks then will add 10 pounds and on weekend hikes up the mountain. AS the weeks tick by ill add 10 pounds at a time and once a week in the boxing gym . 2 stone sheep hunts this year one to help my buddies 12 year old kid on his grand slam and a solo sheep hunt for myself. Both hunts in region 7. Ive hunted with the same rifle for 40 years a 7mm mag husquvarna with 162 gr rounds with a swarovski 3x9 scope. i have swarovski 10x42 binos but leaving them behind and using 10x42 Carson Binos(i really like them), Stone Glacier backpack , swarovski spotting scope . With food im around 56 pounds, boots are lowa tibets gtx(they are awesome) and sitka raingear. as well i never hunt without my walking poles.

Are you 56lbs including the weight of your rifle and poles? I always include everything that’s being carried by me except for the clothes and boots I’m wearing. So everything in or strapped to pack, rifle, binos strapped to chest, poles in hand. That always puts me right around 68-70lbs for a full 14-15 days.

243 should work great for deer…personally I’d go with a bigger caliber that he’ll be able to use on all big game as he gets older, like one of the 6.5’s or 7-08.

I went through this process back in 2021 when picking a cartridge for my daughter (10 at the time) to shoot. The venerable .243 win was high on the list, heck, I even had (well, still have) a rem 700 mtn rifle sitting in the safe for this very purpose. After careful consideration I went with a Weatherby Vanguard compact in 7-08. The reasons: I didn't want to cut the stock on the 700 to shorten the LOP and the 7-08 rem is a much more versatile cartridge. One can load 100 gr varmint rounds for plinking/predators and on up to 150/160's if you want to for big game. It will kill a moose without much issue when using a stout bullet and crush coyotes/ground squirrels...Very similiar powder capacity as the .243 and 7-08 share the same parent cartridge so basically the same recoil when using 100 grain bullets.

I started her off shooting a Sierra 100 gr HP in front of a charge of BL-C(2), recoil wasn't a problem at all. She hunted with a 110 gr Barnes ttsx load that fall. I have since moved her hunting load up to a Barnes 120 gr TTSX BT with a stout load of H4895 behind it...The only thing I need to do this summer is put the spacer block back in to lengthen the LOP a bit!

There’s been a couple threads on here about the 6arc and 6.5 Grendel. I think either would be good for any size mule deer at reasonable distances. I know of one moose shot with a Grendel. I have my sights set on a howa mini action in one of these cartridges whenever I can get to a store to handle a couple different models. I think the 243 win is a big case for a 6mm.

I ended up buying a browning youth model in 6mm creedmoor for my kid. It has a brake on it and stock spacers to add as he grows. I had to look all over Canada for this rifle and ended up with someone answering a wtb ad for a store with no website and the guy had seen it on the shelf the day before. Browning also issued a 50% off of a full sized stock that’s good for five years if I decide to change it up. As TODD BARTELL told me the 6 creed has similar performance as the 243, but usually has a faster twist for running the heavier bullets. 6 creed bullets were hard to find when I bought it, but they seem fairly mainstream now, or at least at the canadian tire downtown.

Decker9 reaching out to see if your planning a sheep hunt this year and if so is your kid going as well? i used to take my son in when he was young shot his first ram with a 243

We are in the planning, flight date is booked. My daughter is pretty determined she’s coming alright, but I’m a bit sceptical on this trip, mostly because of the duration, we have 15 days booked, I think it would be quite a bit for her still. Iv found the 5-6-7 day trips she quite enjoys so far, so I think we’ll do a hike in together later on and hopefully a goat trip or two.

For as tough as she is, she’s still not taking to centerfire shooting. We tried a youth .243 with reduced loads, now have a 6.5 Grendel in a howa mini with reduced loads, she shot it twice, both times she didn’t take to it well. Iv recently picked up a bubba’d model 70 .222 rem that I’ll trim the stock on and reduce some loads for her to try. Iv no idea where this fear of loud bangs or light recoil comes from, but I don’t want to push it with the bigger cartridges quite yet. She’s grown close to 2” over the winter though, so maybe her management to recoil and muzzle blast has too. We’ll be trying out this .222 in the next little bit here, I think once she can warm up to it, the reduced loaded Grendel shouldn’t be to much further off.

Awesome are you going for stones? if so region 6 or 7. I'm in my get ready work out mode lol need to start now to be ready for sheep season. Awesome your daughter is into hunting Although my son whos's in his 30's hunts he has no appetite for hunting sheep he sticks to elk and deer. oh well not everyone gets the sheep bug that never goes away'")") I have two sheep hunts this year. A hunt with my buddy and his young son who' s going for a grand slam thats impressive for a kid to do and i have a second hunt solo in region 7

Awesome stuff! Hopefully he can finish it off with a slammer of a stone! My partner and I will be flying into reg 7 again for opener. If my daughter and I do a hike in later in the season, we may head up to the alaska Hwy, we have in-laws in fsj so would probably be a visit trip with a 5-7 day sheep hunt in there too if I can find a buddy to come along, kinda needs to be a second rifle along I think. My lady would normally come but were hoping she’ll have a bun in the oven vs a pack on her back this year.

My hats off to you guys doing it with strings of horses. I spent a season many years ago clearing trails and setting up goat camps for a local outfitter with his horses, was a heck of a good time and showed me what a good horse was. At the time I had horses, more her horses, but they were of the English kind… you can imagine.

But the work involved to train and set up your pack, and get out there, cheers to you guys! Maybe in the future I’ll get back into a horse or two, with regular saddles lol.

Both, I’ll sit/stay them if I’m belly crawling into a new area. The year I took my ram I was solo, I sat/saty’d my old dog with some water and leftover gear from my pack for a final stalk. Took my ram and did all the work, 4-5 hours later when I got back my dog was still layin in the same spot. If, there were fresh wolf sign or grizzly sign around, I’d probably not do that.

The training didn’t come easy though, a lot of time spent and stalking animals. My newer dog, is still in that learning but doing great.

I’m going to guess 9 or 10. But as I understand from some of the threads on here, you’re only allowed to count the lines you can see, not what’s been beat off in which case it would be 7-8.

And that’s only a guess, because I dont have any experience. I live in Alberta and here they’re judged by curl for legality, not age. I’m hoping one of the experienced guys breaks it down for us.

Honest question here. I would think the first ring from the broomed tip on that ram is the 2nd year anuli. If that's the case I think he's 8 at least possibly 9. The regs say at least 8 years based on rings as determined by the wildlife manager or his designate. Do you only count the first visible ring as the 1st year regardless of being broomed off? Thanks!

I did about 10 kms and 250 meters elevation w/40 lbs and yesterday. Cumulative for the year so far is about 130 kms (weighted hikes) and about 4600 meters elevation. I'm a bit behind where I was last year - I racked up 400 kms and 12000 kms elevation before I hit the mountains. I won't get there this year - injury and shortage of steep mountains where I live now. I'll stick with 40lbs in the pack until the end of May, add another 5 in June for a few weeks and then top out and stay at 50 in July. I'll do a full pack (everything I'll be taking on my hunt) a couple of times in July. Everything I'm carrying in my pack now is what I'll be bringing on my hunt, in other words no sandbags or weightlifting plates. I find that makes for a much more realistic fit. Mixing in lots of road bike rides also.

Getting stronger (not bodybuilding) definitely makes a difference for backpacking or anything strenuous. As I get older I spend a lot more time improving strength and power, it has made a very noticeable difference the last few years sheep hunting. I do compound excercises using barbell and kettlebells, all starting from the floor. Deadlifts, zercher squats, kettlebell front squats, presses. Kettlebell swings, cleans, snatches, presses, Turkish getups. As sheep season gets closer I add a lot more walks with pack on.

mod7rem
05-10-2024, 09:30 AM
I’ll add this.
I’ve found that if a person stays active and in decent shape all year round as part of a lifestyle. Then the biggest improvement to heavy backpacking ability, is using the winter season to get stronger and more powerful. It makes the body more stable, more efficient in movement and more resilient. Then get more serious about training with a pack closer to go time.
I find it more effective than wearing a pack for long periods during the year. Just my experience.

mod7rem
05-10-2024, 09:49 AM
I also find as I get older (mid 50’s), that I get more benefit from more frequent workouts but shorter duration and less involved. I try to fit something in as many days of the week as I can.
eg, -short warm up and 20-30 mins of kettlebell snatch repeats.
Instead of trying to fit too much into every workout and stretching them to 1.5 + hours, then taking a day or two off. That might be better for young men.

The “use it or lose it” saying really starts to make sense as you age.

TheObserver
05-10-2024, 10:50 AM
Exercises that improve explosiveness are good too (snatchs and cleans being two examples). Powerful legs are definitely important, thats why I do them twice a week weighted and then hiking every weekend

Yes, that’s power training.
The bulk of the lean muscle mass we lose as we get older is type 2 fast twitch muscle fiber. Type 1 fiber is easier to maintain with resistance training, think “old man strength”.
But to maintain as much type 2 fibers for as long as possible requires power training. Olympic lifts, kettlebell ballistics, sprinting, etc.
Olympic lifts are way too technical (therefore risky) for some of us, including me. So kettlebell ballistics and sprinting are perfect.

I havent done squats myself so cant say if it helps or not but for me i find if you pack up in the hills everyday it builds up the stamina. You dont necessarily have to be strong just need to be able to go. i hunted once with a gym workout guy who was all muscle, he was good for a a while and them started wilting especially if your burning more calories than your are taking in everyday. Going up and down the hills sheep hunting you burn way more calories that you can eat. I know guys like to ride bikes, hike with packs. treadmill , stationary bikes and stair climbers for training. Climbing stairs is good

Ya definitely makes sense.. I try to hike longer distances with the pack on as well
Basically good to train for strength, endurance, and cardio, a good balance IMO...

Any Particular sock liner?

I use a merino blend one. It's at the house so I forgot the name. It has some venting by the toes. Light and allows the foot to float a bit in the boot and pulls the moisture.

Both my buddy and I had zero issues on our sheep hunt. Only thing I'd consider is a stiffer boot for side hilling. That was rough.

i had an air drop last year for food which is always weather dependent as was my case no food for 5 days till weather broke. sure was nice to be lighter hiking in:) \nice thing is i know the area your heading into. the area is alright packing into but packing out can be a bitch lol one hill in particular to get to the flats :)

I asked this earlier in the thread but maybe you didn’t see it.

If you are 55-56lbs all in for a couple week trip, I’d like to learn from your gear and food list. Over the years my biggest increase in pack weight has come from upgrades in optics. Better spotter, binos, tripod and scope have all added weight lol.
My food has been pretty consistent for awhile at 1.3 lbs per day.

This year I’m definitely going to use your string with strips of plastic bag system.
I too would like to see your list...for my hike in elk hunts, my pack is usually 60-65 lbs, but for only a 3-4 day hunt!

[QUOTE=decker9;2447167]Yup defiantly getting excited! My whole year gets booked around sheep hunts, Iv been counting down the days!!
Iv spent the past couple winters building a new sheep rifle stock, it’s back to walnut for this guy. rifle sits at 5 1/5 lb bare I was hoping to checker it before august, but I won’t have time with all the chores piled up. I’m excited to put some mountain miles on it.

Thanks fellas. I built that 6.5 prc on an anti action and 22” #1 benchmark firing 140gr accubonds at 2975fps. I have a AGC privateer for it as well. I packed that last season, but swapping out for walnut this season. Iv only got a half dozen rounds through it with the walnut, im curious to see if it (and I) hold the same accuracy as with the AGC stock. Next days off we have a range day planned to give it a good test.

As some of you may or may not know im in the process of scrubbing and deleting my account. I will no longer be able to assist sheep hunters on this site but can be found on other sites. Hopefully the process shouldn't take more than a week. Then the gang of six can have their celebrations:)

Im here for about a week going to take that long to get thru the posts and houseclean and delete what i need to delete. Yes on spike and other platforms. Thanks

Good stuff! I’m quite enjoying the SC and it’s people. I recently started a mountain goat identification thread, over 70 photos and 100’s more to come!

A sheep aging thread was recently started as well, wish I had rams to share in there, I look forward to all the seasoned sheep guys to fill up the thread with aging photos. Hope to see you in there :)

Well there’s been countless members who have stopped coming to this site. I use to like it so maybe It is a habit to click the link. The ankle biters chased another good one off. This site holds no value anymore. I just came to kick the cage full of chihuahuas once in a while. These low value members chased off a veteran sheep hunter (SRH) with years of knowledge to share. I can name countless great people who stopped coming to this site and I can see why. It’s full of garbage. I too am joining that crowd. To the good ones who have helped with knowledge over the years , thank you very much for your support and time. To the ones I keep in touch with , chat soon. To the rest, enjoy your circle jerk.

Crazy how you and SRH take zero responsibility for your part. I guess it’s everyone else’s fault and you two are innocent victims…..people just began picking on him out of the blue for no reason…..how un lucky.

No personal accountability whatsoever. Must be nice to be able to just have no responsibility for anything at all.

Why do you feel the need to announce you are leaving over and over? Why did you feel the need to make the announcement in the first place. All you needed to do was delete any posts you wanted to and then log off.

No need for all the drama. Just delete and log off.

Point proven , petty AF.

I guess you need accountability to want to stop reading this bull shit you losers post. Same with all the greats who left. You lame bro.

the only responsibility I have is to keep grinding so I can be semi retired at 45 chillin at my offgrid homestead at the lake. By then I’m sure you’ll still be spewing your shit on the Covid page. Good luck pal ! Over and out!
