Well after an eventful weekend of hunting Blacktails (another story) HighCaliber and I had a day trip planned for reg 3. Took a tour doubled on the quad to get the lay of the land a bit and to wait a bit for things to soften up as it was -10 with 4-5in of snow when we arrived. So after acouple of glassing sessions and some close encounters of some good deer we split up and made some plans to work the hillsides. But litlle did we know that I would get into some action shortly after splitting up. I broke out of some timber into the previously scouted burn tracking some good sign including numerous rubs. I broke away from the tracks to get to some glassing points and as I worked my way down the slope I was seeing lots of benches below ranging from 5ft. wide to 100ft. which became littered with tracks. Trying to take my time I found my self sliding almost out of control into these benches. Well it didn't take long before I spotted a doe, so I crouched over this narrow ledge looking for more. There was nothing I thought.... until I decided to dig out my rattling antlers. Well as soon as they touched this buck came running out spooked! I let a grunt and i stopped him in his tracks but behind some dead trees.
so i crawled around to get a better look and the more I looked at him the more points he grew! It must have been a 2mins and he was getting nervous as well as his girl then he started to bolt so i let out another grunt that stopped him again but still dead trees obstructed my shot @170 yrds. So I waited what seemed like foreveer and he began to move, one more grunt was used to stop him then I let one fly! He went about 30 feet and skided to a hault right where th pics were taken. Now I don't know if this guy would have made the winter even though he was a younger deer. The reason I say this is that he was a scrapper with 5deep puncture wounds and every gland from his face on his drivers side was abcessed badly! When we went to remove his shoulder (wing) that gland was festered to the size of a big grapefruit between his shldr and rib.He also had no fat cover and was quite boney! I'm really happy about this buck and plan to mount him!http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/100_0198.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=6947&ppuser=1677)

Mike.

Great looking buck. Good thing you vacated the Chwk valley - I've been pounding the hills hard for a couple weeks with very ungratifying results.

Great deer! It sounds like he was a scrapper, no wonder he was jumpy. It is amazing what injurys they will survive.

Brambles,

I believe it had snowed there 2 days prior to our arrival!

Tarpman,

Unfortunatly the bucks front quarters were abcessed pretty bad and wasn't gonna take those portions in their poor condition. Jamie was there and between us both we distributed the weight of 2 hinds 2 backstraps and the rack 'n' cape.(one of my lightest packjobs ever) The no gut method was used to dress the deer. I tell you the photo session took longer than the dressing! lol!!!!:D
