Shared Moose Hunt

Can someone please explain how the odds work with 3 or 4 people in a shared moose LEH? Would the odds be better if a 4th person is added to the group as compared to a 3 person group?

That is incorrect. You might be thinking of group hunts, in which that would be true. But for shared hunts, which are only for moose and bison, the odds for the "shared hunting party" increase with every entrant.

Here is an excerpt taken directly from the regs "For a Shared Hunt application, each memberof the group is entered in the draw as aseparate application. If any member of thegroup is drawn, the entire group is treated asbeing drawn and authorizations are issuedas follows: A group of two will be authorizedto take one moose or bison, and a group ofthree or four will be authorized to take twomoose or bison."

4 applicants have better odds than 3 applicants in a shared hunt BUT if anyone in your group has been successful at getting a moose/bison leh draw in the last 3 years then the odds go down for everyone in the group.

And yes the remaining 2 get 2 tags.

However, for Group applications specifically, you are changing your overall chances by applying as 1 Group chance in the draw. So you could individually have 4 hunters apply for the same hunt code for mule deer and you would have 4 total individual chances to be drawn amongst those 4 applications. If 1 of those hunters won it would be an individual win alone, although all 4 hunters could win potentially individually. If you applied with the same 4 hunters as a Group for mule deer instead then you would have only the 1 total chance in the draw to win. But you would win together, which is a key factor to many hunters. In many cases hunters will only travel to a specific, perhaps out of the way area, if they actually have their own LEH draw. It is far more likely that you would win together as a Group than if all members applied as individually. So there isn’t necessarily a benefit either way you apply in that situation, it is just how you and your partners want to hunt. If your partners will travel together no matter who wins, then it might be better to put in individually to have more overall chances at a choice hunt, just to try and get one of you drawn.

As for Shared hunts versus individual hunts, again, neither is better or worse, they just have different options. With 4 moose hunters attached together, all 4 have separate chances for your Shared hunt to win and it only takes 1 of you getting lucky to pull all the other members to the win. If you are 4 individual hunters you would have 4 individual chances in the LEH draw to be drawn, alone. If you are 4 Shared hunters you would have 4 Shared chances to win, together. It’s the same number of overall chances both ways. However, one outcome could be that a Shared hunt of 4 hunters might only win 1 total moose amongst them all. Another potential outcome is that if you all win together in a Shared hunt, then when applying together again under reduced odds for moose for three years, you would have multiple hunters available to beat those reduced odds versus an individual hunter with just the 1 chance to win in any given year.

I know that is a whole lot of information but this should hopefully clear up any questions you might be wondering about.

Does anyone know off hand if you can add another hunter to a shared moose hunt at anytime before the LEH closes to applications ? We have a shared hunt applied for now as every year , but someone may want to join .

Yes you can, as long as you don't exceed four hunters total.

as you create the group application you can put in other hunter info but once the app is in then a hunter has to add himself to the group through his log in
