Any thoughts on whether or not this is a decent buck?

well i,v heard on this site that "big bucks scape big trees". that being said all the scrapes i have come across, have been on smaller trees than that.

Looks more like a blade made those marks to me over an old scape maybe.

Certainly does go very low to the ground!

The blade is a tine. I would guess from brow tines and the remainder from the inside of the mainframe. This guy was on a mission, about 30 trees in a 500m stretch.

I will be back to look for him8-).

I have a spot where the buck is rubbing trees just like that.....just last week I snuck in there and got in on a few does......buck comes crashing in I think"Oh shit this is gonna be good" he ended up being a friggin dink...pissed me off! But lately the bucks have been busy so i'm hoping maybe??? Good luck with that one .

That is a yr or older rub....scrapes are made by whitetails and moose wich consist of a 'scraped' area on the ground..smell them they reak of urine.....you can never rely on a rub to tell the size of a buck !!...could have been a rut crazed , frustrated fork that decided the tree was going to pay for the shit kickin a big buck gave him a day ago ?? ( speculation as usual)...I tracked a nutso blacktail couple yrs ago in fresh snow...he attacked maybe 25 plus willows and cedars along the way...some were 2" , others a half inch..like we might think was a 'dink buck'...some were 'scrubed clean' of bark , others just a mild fresh rub....mostly just small stuff....got him next day he went 141B&C....??...??......I go by foot size / roundness of the toes in the print...this is a SOLID clue.......

If the veggies near the rub are also contacted by the antlers, a better judge of size can be made. If there are multiple stems and only one is mangled, chances are of a smaller rack. According to theory.

I've seen big Bucks leave small rubs and small Bucks leave big rubs.......all depends on the Buck and his fondness for it

Sure a Big Rub gets the heart going but in all honesty it is seldom a "sure sign" of a BIG Buck IMO :-D

Orangethunder if i come across a good rub like that one ,i my self wouldn't overlook that area. Sure it might be a small buck that rubbed on that tree ,but then again it might be a monster buck. It's worth the effort to look over that area ,nothing to loose ,but maybe lots to gain.

Right you are. The rub was a day old when I took the pic (shavings on top of the snow). I was out in the general area again yesterday and the bucks are still going hard, too bad I was at work:-(!!!

It must have been a hybred big/dink! Perhaps a pissed off quad hunter, or perhaps Todd Bartell after being scoped by some guy with a crossbow!

That being said I'd be setting up a tree stand right some quick! ;-) dopn't forget yer camera!

Simple: shoot him, post the pics, and then ask if he is big........by the looks of it, he's a good one.
