Brandon and I just got back from a successful hunt up near pink mountain. We met Caveman and his Dad on Monday Nov 5 while checking for fresh sign. We decided to team up with what was described by some other hunters as road hunters, but after seeing them walk 7 km through the
bush before Caveman connected, there was little truth in that statement. Brandon had helped Caveman get his bison out and hunted with him the following day, then left for the trip home. brandon and I stayed in the same area the next two days with a close call on Bison on Friday, but could not get close for the shot. Saturday we headed into the same area and we came accross fresh tracks going down a cut line which Brandon followed. A short distance down and he came accross the lone bull that he bagged. The work then began with it being completed just before dark. Great hunt, would like to get drawn myself and do it all over again. Greg you up for it? Brandon is!http://pb100014.zip/

Whiskeyjack.....go to www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com), create a free account an upload your pics to there.

You will see when in your post a little "yellow and green picture" of a mountain. Click on that and you will be prompted to add the URL of the picture (link to the photobucket picture) and add it on through there.

Whiskeyjack,

When where you there?
Did you stay at the Indian cabins or were you wall tenting it?

My buddies wife (and my friend) just took a decent (tender size) cow from up there.
It was like the wild west. 2 bowhunters, another 6 or 7 rifle hunters, and all of their buddies lining up for a shot. It all went pretty well and everyone went out of his/her way to make it work and get along. I don't think anyone got his nose too far out of joint.

The last time we got a tag there was only one other hunter. This time it was a well...... Very different hunt.

Man those bison are tough! I watched the guy beside us put 3 good 338 Win rounds into a decent bull and it just stood there for about 15 minutes! We were using a 300 Win loaded with 200gr Nosler Partitions. We put 4 in the body (one bad shot) and two in the head before it quit!

Nice buff by the way! Looks tasty!

I took mine with my little 30.06. Two in the ribs that likely would have killed him soon enough because the blood was pouring out of him, but I put a third in the neck and dropped him like a sack of Sh*t. Proof that shot placement and not the caliber is what kills. If my third shot was the first, I wouldn't have needed the others. It broke his neck and he was dead before I could walk up on him. There was an 1.5" hole right through his spine.

Freshtracks;
We met up with Caveman and he got his on the second day, after helping him get it out, we stayed in the same area and Brandon got his on the sixth day. Lots of work but lots of fun.

Caveman,
We borrowed a chainsaw from somebody that was using a 30-06 was that you? If it was thanks again!

For what it's worth 3 of the 4 shots we put into our animal were good mid lung hits. The forth and final shot was well placed but it was at such an angle that it didn't penetrate far enough to make it past the liver (had to mow some serious grass before it got there).

Through my binos I watched the guy beside me place all three 338 bullets into the heart/lung area. The blood just poured out of the animals mouth yet it refused to go down.

In an attempt to finish our buff (shooting off hand) I put two in the head while the animal was moving at just over 100 yards. The animal was dead broadside and I aimed one shot at the eye and then the next at the base of the horn. Neither put the animal down but after the animal was dead you could grab the horns and rotate the skull 20-30 degrees in either direction (a weird sensation).

You can see the one bullet hole about an inch below the eye..... the horn shot needs no explanation. I was pretty happy with my shooting but I have to admit that I still have no idea as to where the brain is......

Sorry it's pretty gory.

I was there helping out a buddy with his LEH - post is here (http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=28369)

Congrats on your bull! That is some tough hunting, whether it's the cold, the crowd, or the animal.

I understand there were 43 tags for the Nov 15th draw. I bet we saw/met about 15 different groups. We noted that after the first days (huge) hunting pressure, they were all to be found up in the hills and cliff faces! Although there were crowds, we also found that everyone got along well, helped each other out, and had some great stories.

The natives charge $175 per group to cross their land to hunt. The cabin sleeps 7 for $65 a night. We stayed at the hotel at Sasquatch Crossing, just north of Pink Mountain, $95 per night, definately not 4-star, but they had an Atco trailer rec room where we could drink beer and watch the fight. You can reach the hunting grounds easily (a creek crossing and some major steep hills aside) without paying if you have quads (we did, thankfully there wasn't too much snow) or snow machines. Just before you reach the gate marked private property at the ranch there is a trail to the right with a good wall-tent camp just up from the road. Follow the trail onto a seismic line around the back side of the native's ranch, then hang a right when you reach the trail that exits the ranch, along the Halfway River.

Also highly recommended - a cheap chainsaw with canola oil for chain lube. Makes quartering a cinch.

Even if you do choose to pay, don't plan on driving in with a pickup - there are limits how far you can take 'em. Quads can go farther, snow machines farther still. Crossing the ranch rather than taking the trail around will save about 1/2 hour each way, which will be worth it IMO when you're soaked through from tracking/killing/gutting/skinning/quartering/loading/hauling an animal that weighs up to 2000 lbs. and its -17 degrees out. We chose not to on principle, and man were we toast when we finished unloading at the truck at 8:00pm.

PM me if you want more info.

We also stayed at Sasquatch Crossing, they have a small cabin in the back, full kitchen, bathroom, two double beds. Quite nice. $100/night. If you go in at 156 mile you can access some of both 57a and b, low pressure some great area. You have to go in about 22km to get to the MU. Well maintained roads
Good Luck on your draw!!
