Yesterday while driving to a project site, I finally found the CRANKER muley that I was holding out for... Smokin' busy with work, as usual, I haven't had time to pound the bush and have been out for bucks only a few times, but have hit all of my prime spots and have stomped alot of ground. I've seen about a dozen bucks and have had a couple up to ~160 in my scope, but with a freezer full of elk, have been holding out for Grandpa...

It was a work day, but I loaded up the rifle and bino's just in case I got some time at the end of the day... It was about noon and I was in a good wintering area that I'd stomped around and seen some huge non-typical sheds. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of the white face of of a linebacker of a muley... I slowed down and got another glimpse through an opening in the bush... he was alone, standing in the willows on the edge of a small swamp about 80m down a small draw... the forest was only a few bounds away and the area is thick and steep which makes it difficult to catch one of these big boys in the open... He was a specimen of a timber buck with thick bases and mass that carried to the tips of his antlers that were almost black pitch from rubbing the mountain pines... (continued...)

Steep, stop jerking our chains, our season has been closed for 10 days so I know this story isn't going to end with a dead buck, hope you got a shot off with the camera though. You must have been hunting whitetails.

Bruin

The pic in his avatar is a buck from a couple years ago, not the guy from this story.

I sure hope this is going to end with a picture of a huge buck.

Sorry that it's take me so long to get back on here, but I'm just starting to recover from that UNbelievable day!..

(continued... I quickly stopped the SUV, loaded up my gear and headed back to find that buck... I circled around the swamp and just as I got him in my binos TWAAAK! I felt a sharp blow to the back of my head... I fell to the ground unconscious...

when I woke up... in a daze, I crawled to the nearest house. Luckily, the guy was a carpenter who had seen this kinda thing before and graciously cut a plug and got the arrow out...

When I recovered I heard the story... Apparently this 'unique' crew from up north had heard about the buck and came down to hunt him. Reportedly, their rifles got burnt up in a tent fire and all they had left was a crossbow... As I was stealthing through the bush, their crossbow got caught on a stud and misfired hitting me in the back of the head...

Sorry it took so long to finish the story, but today after starting the story I got called away to a meeting and on the way... my string of luck continued... but I finally had some horns...

I just got back from ICBC and the taxidermist, who said that he can glue that horn back on... unfortunately, the CRANKER muley got away, but I have some gratuitous (twisted) horn porn for ya:

that's my story...
(either that or I was waiting for SSS to get sucked in to pay him back for that 40 incher on his birthday... doh!)

  Seriously... I hunted hard and I'm eatin' muley flavoured tag soup... With no does around that CRANKER wasn't as dumb as I expected and he was gone by the time I got back with my video... I followed his path up through the timber and he grunted back to me, but I never saw him again... apparently he can read the regs, cause I was at that spot 5 days ago when the season was open... (Brambles - thanks for spillin' the punchline ;-) ) until next year...

Here's a buddy's dark-horned timber buck from 2 years ago that reminds me of the CRANKER...

Steep, sorry for spoiling your joke...

Glad to hear your at least seeing the biguns because I hunted hard and never seen a piss cutter, next season perhaps. I'll be able to make it out for the Early season and I look forward to some High alpine treking and checking out some more remote spots.

I'm also hoping that we get some snow up high next year so that the biguns are pushed down a little and we can track them. Season ends too damn early down here if you ask me.

That's it?? It's pretty hard to suck in a old guy like me. Pretty much seen everything life has to offer at this age:roll:.

Keep trying Steep!!

Now go shoot a nice vermin!

To avoid the lynch mob, I went through my f'd up photos and...

I hunted hard when I was out there... Spending 2 full days in my favorite spot, where I shot my last 2 bucks (100 yards apart) and normally see 30-40 deer and ~10 bucks, there wasn't a single deer?!? There was almost no snow and I don't know why they left the area - wolves, big cat??? There were may cattle tracks, but there always is... It was the end of October... Any ideas???

There was a big buck there earlier in the season... Here's one of his favorite trails...

Here's a stud about to get a piece that I saw in my travels...

I look forward to seein' the biguns that fall to those northern boys in the late season...

Good lookin rubs Steep, I think the lack of snow was our problem this year. It was a funny year for deer hunting, hunted some really productive spots in october and didn't see squat, they really stuck to the darkness.
