I was at Crappy Tire in North Van this afternoon and was interested in buying some ammo.
After showing the young guy my PAL with a 2012 Expiery date I decided to purchase the two boxes of ammo. He pulled out a log book from diplay case and I was thinking inventory control. Nope he wanted to record my PAL number and a few other details as well. I said, nope dont need the ammo that bad not to mention this information is not required as of yet in the Firearms Legislation, my question is "has anyone else been asked for this type of info "?
Cheers,
Rob

I've heard of that store policy before, therefore I never go there. You were right to walk away, that info is private and they have no control of distribution.

Hello Rob

Wally world tried that when the new registry first came out
I told them the same thing, "pound sand". They did away
with the BS shortly after as well. They have no right
to ask for further info and it is not required by law. Phone and
ask to speak to the manager and ask why they require this info? If
it's company policy tell them you'll advise everyone you know about
it and tell them not to shop there.

Who cares if you look fishy or for that matter smell fishy!

I think I saw a thread on Gun nutz about something similar some time ago.

Apparently it is law in Ontario that you have to show and tell with the papers and they record it.

Maybe the manager there is a transplant from out East?

I agree

That they may be, but don't blame the kid for doing as they're told. It's store policy, take it up with the manager. I stopped buying my .22 there long ago when they would escort me to the front till to pay. I would pay and go back to shopping. "I wasn't done yet!!"

sounds like an individual store policy. never been recorded at the store in abbotsford. generally, the kids are friendly, though they know jack about guns. i always open the box and check the cartridges having heard stories about mismatched and lousy ammo. the crappy tire kids generally seem shocked by the size of something labeled 7mm, and a shotgun round that's a big chunk of lead wieghing an ounce. lol.

haven't bought at the local walmart yet.

Thanks for the concenses ( spelling ) I think I need coffee bad ....
I dont care if the kid has zits on his or her face, but when I was asked for my PAL and what ever else he was asking I told him that " that info is not required by law" ( not now at least ) and "that I didnt need the ammo that bad."
I was thinking of talking to a manager , but the last time I spoke to one she was younger than the person helping me.
I am not rude or abusive to anyone until they run off at the mouth first, even if it is shopping at Crappy Tire, after all they are new to the work force and need to learn too.
Not everyone works under the protection and interest of a Union.
Again was looking to see if it was just a local incident or was something bigger, thanks to all who have replied.
Rob

I don't agree with the ledger system, but you'd think that they would all be somewhat consistant wouldn't you?
Our CT here in Campbell River looks at your PAL, not really reading it mind you, just seeing if you have one, and then they take the ammo up to the front and leave it there for you to pick up. When you go through the cashier, you ask for it and they ring it up. They don't ask to see your PAL again, or even verify that you are the person who requested the ammo. A little simple, but easy to buy there.
I've found the sports shops in the area are gouging on their prices which is why I go to Canucky Tire.

Does anyone know what, if any, regulations procedures the retailers are supposed to follow?

Hi Rob,

I've heard of this happening in Ontario.

I thought I looked for ammo at CT in North Van and all they had was pellets - no wait, that was Vancouver.

Anyway, I did buy some shotshells in Coquitlam's CT with no hassle or ledger book, just the usual showing of the PAL.

I have bought .22 Ammo several times at the store out here in the Ridge and all they do is look at your Pal and bring the Ammo to the cash desk:cool:

I was at CT 2 weeks ago with my neighbour, he needed a box of 300 winmag ammo.
Asked for help, the young lady opened the case, neighbour picks out the box he likes, we procede to the cashier and pay...........have a nice day.
No Pal required.

After that I was wondering if the whole "present your PAL" thing has been abolished.

What is the current state of the registry?..........anybody know?

It's policies like this that keep me from feeling guilty about the time I bought a brick of .22 ammo at CT, and they only charged me for one box at the till.

I bought a box of 7mm at cambodian tire in Langford a couple of weeks ago and the young girl wouldn't even open the cabinet until I showed my pol and then she proceded to inform me that she was an environmentalist and that the world population was growing to fast and there should be something "done" about the number of people and to leave the poor animals alone. I think she'll be on the news one day hand cuffed to a tree or something, cuz someone has to "stick" up for them gary oaks.

That happened to me as well when I asked for a brick from the storeroom. I had other stuff so didn't notice till out the door. Told my dad and he was in there the next day trying the same deal...they had wised up by then I guess.

I have bought .22s a few times at the NV store. with no probelems. I asked for and told the store manager that it was not legaly required to do so. There is no Fed. or Prov. legislation requirering the record keeping of buyers personal info to do so would breach privacy acts I believe.

Oh, 2slow, don't get your knickers in a knot. If you can honestly tell me that you would drive all the way back to the store, a week after the fact when you noticed it on the bill, and attempt to give them their $18, on your own time when it was them who screwed up, then you can go ahead and call me a thief and I'll suck it up. If you cannot in all honesty say that, then you should think twice about making silly statements such as that. It probably would have cost them $19 to take my $18....

wasnt buying ammo but they did the reverse of this once to me, walked to the till with a box of clay and the gal proceded to bill be 15.99 for each of 135 or whatever it is in the box...lol, man that would've been an expensive round of clay shooting!:-D

Oh, 2slow, don't get your knickers in a knot. If you can honestly tell me that you would drive all the way back to the store...I'm inclined to correct the clerk no matter which way it goes. If I'm charged $2.99 instead of $29.90 I'd notice. No, I don't go back after the fact.

In any case, I show my PAL and they walk me to the till. One CT had a bank pouch system for "valuables".

An employee of any business doesn't get to make condescending remarks to a customer, regardless of his or her personal beliefs. I'm afraid I'd have objected vigorously to the management and, if I didn't get satisfaction there, I'd have gone to higher levels.

I told her that hunting was a good way of controling the animal population and that "Bambi" was real tasty and if she wanted to "do something" about the people population she'd better get a pol, because she couldn't buy ammo without it! She shut up:smile:

Haven't read all the above posts yet as I have just a minute to be on here. I have had a woman grill me about my PAL, ask me for my birthday (what a good security question???) and tell me "this isn't a firearms license" because it looked nothing like her military issue card. It all depends who you get. Sometimes they don't even ask me for it.

I buy ammo at the Langford Crappy Tire sometimes. I usually get an older women that I've talked to a few times. She's good to deal with. The odd thing is that she told me the story of how her ex-Hubby shot her twice. I asked her if it bothered her to sell ammo. She said not really cause it's the person behind the gun, not the gun that she's afraid of and most people are OK. She said some people just shouldn't have guns though. She's got that right.

I buy ammo some times at crappy tire on the island at both Nanaimo and Duncan and EVERY time I have bought it at Duncan in the past year at least, they won't even look at my card and say it is NOT required. I know is is bull but I just buy it. The one in Naniamo asks me every time and they surely look at it. I have never had anyone actually take info though. Thats not right.
