I was wondering if it was legal to buy or hunt with silencers, and if it reduces the accuracy. I figure if i come across a herd of deer, i could harvest one, without scaring off the rest, so my buddy could harvest one......

thanks

Silencers (suppressors) are prohibited in Canada, although there is really no good reason for the prohibition.

Keep in mind, rifle cartridges will still produce a sonic boom, even when used wiht suppressors.

as long as it is faster then the speed (about 1100 fps) of sound it will make a sonic boom but if you were to get a slow round say 800 to 1000fps and a long enough barrel it would do a good job of lobbing out a round fairly quietly:tongue:

There is a good reason you have to ask that ?? here, and that no one you know has one. Everyone should have a read of the CFA, it has lots of surprises.

I have spent a couple of seasons working in southern England. If you have the proper permission and premits you are allowed to use a moderated, (silenced) firearm. They use them mainly for wildife control, the permit is NOT just given to anyone and can be very difficult to get. It does cut down the noise from a high powered rifle but is most effect of low vel. 22 ammun.

Ditto.
We have used this 'method' lots. Many times the other animals get confused to where the sound actually came from. JMO

Shooting subsonics out of a .22 is barely audible, you can hear the sound of the hammer!

CB cap's in a 22 with a longish barrel. Quieter than most pellet guns.

Quite a few of my Pel's both pistol and rifle are louder than my powdered .22's. Especially when the .22's are loaded with CB's all you really hear is a click;-)

rural folks are in a bit of a dilemna-many people like to keep a dozen chickens for fresh eggs and eating table scraps-but whenever you have chickens-you have coons and in spite of building a roofed over coop on a foundation, heavy chain link fence over chicken wire-you still have predators-mainly mink, coons and rats.Sure-you could put out poison, and traps[I always have a rat trap on the upper plate]but try as you might-youstill have the occaisional coon or mink-and a 22 is the best way to deal with the problem-not an issue until city people began moving into rural areas and where the sound of a 22 never used to raise an eyebrow-now you could face a SWAT team.....and therein lies the neccesity of discretion-no point in advertising what you are doing.

Was at the Otter Co-op buying some stovepipe for the W tent and noticed that they had CB's in the locked case. When I asked for a box of CB's the sales clerk, she said Oh, you mean Langley Shells. Lot more to the conversation, but you get the idea.;)

As was mentioned the sonic boom from a rifle round isn't very loud. I always remember it sounding a lot like someone snapping a pencil in half.

Silencers do not negatively affect accuracy, in fact they've been shown to have a slight improvement on accuracy because the column of air that shoots out behind the bullet is vented off to the sides instead of pushing against the back of the round quite so strongly.

But as others mentioned, absolutely illegal in Canada. And not the kind of illegal that gets you off with a warning, if the cops found you with a working silencer you can bet on jail time.

In New Zealand silencers are legal. I have used them to hunt rabbits. With no preditors it is your civic duty to shoot rabbits. With a silenced 22 and low velocity ammo it is not uncommon to shoot over 20 or 30 at any given spot. I have shott hundreds in a day.

Would be nice to hunt rabbit with a silenced 22 rim in Richmond or Annacis Island.

For chicken coop raiders (actually duck coop) I load my 30-30 bolt actions with 168gr cast bullets at about 900 fps..sounds lik a 22 short, penetrates like hell...

I am sure it would killa deer out to about 100 yards. After that it starts to lose alot of velocity and drops liek a stone. But great for little varmits!!

I use CB longs for dispatching coons discreetly without the chamber fouling of the short CBs or regular shorts. They work good at the point blank range I use them at but I have skinned many coons with multiple .22 bullets that I assume people are using shorts or CBs at a bit longer ranges and they were not effective and the wounds have healed over. As for silencers it's too bad they're illegal here. Jim
