Ok, whew that was a long long hunt! 2.5 hours from actual hunt start to finish!!! We slept in on the morning of the 15th after too much karoake at the Pink Mountain Motel. we strolled across to the gas station and someone asked where we were going to Bison hunt to which I replied, " to be honest, we really don't have a clue (except for some tips I gleaned on here)! A man said, bring me your map. He showed us how to get to the normal bison hunting grounds without having to pay a trespass fee. We ended up at the Genesis Road after driving our quads for a bit. This road leads to the valley. We found fresh sign on the side of the road and made a decision to park our quads and follow the tracks (3 bison) into the bush. We tracked them for 20 minutes before we heard them ahead. They must have increased in speed as we could not catch a glimpse of them...we even had a First Nations Tracker (he told me to use the other non-PC term but some might take offence and/or not understand that depending on the spirit in which it is used it is ok). Ryan, our tracker, said that he thought they were trying to back track on us and he was right. We ended up back at the road...the little buggers did back track on us!!! There they were, standing on the side of the road at approx 125 yards. Boom, Boom! Two shots and the smallest one was down!! Man it was exciting as well as surprising as we did not expect to see some so soon. We got to work and caped it out minus the head as we just cut that off and left the hide attached to it. We cut it in two, and strapped half to each quad. There was about 14 inches of snow on the road but the quads handled it well. Talk about a great hunt! Not only was it my birthday but it was Frank's who had the draw! A bison for his birthday...does not happen too many times if ever to most people.

I've never hunted bison on a ranch-but have entertained the thought more than once when coming home empty handed from a moose hunt-where we called in bulls-but not the elusive immature.
Adding another day to the trip and spending $1 a pound for a freezer full of good meat isn't a bad deal-especially when we have already paid for all the gas, ferry fares, time off, meals etc. to go anyway.

The problem is-unless you already know where to go , we're already on the way home-a bit late to start looking for a bison ranch

Great buffalo!

Incidently for those of you who can't seem to get drawn we have a free ranging Sikanni buffalo hunt available at our auction at the Wild Sheep Society's fundraiser in Kamloops on March 15th ish.

Bring your best VISA card and maybe you'll have one of these for yourself!

Ratherbefishing:

We also have a farmed buffalo harvest available at our auction as well. It's in the Dawson Creek area as I recall. Buy it at our auction and then you'd have it all lined up before you head North. Guaranteed to taste better than any moose too!
