Well, the fires really screwed up my plans, so I ended up in the area where I shot my last buck. Went out solo yesterday to a place where me and my pops were seeing lots of does and one 3x3.

Going up this FSR, I was seeing tons of does on both sides of the road. Got to one spot I wanted to check out, and there was a single doe already there that I watched for a while. Hopped out the truck and walked uncomfortably slow about 5-600yrds up this trail and spotted another doe with a good body on her. Unfortunately, she spotted me before I saw her. I was trying to move as little as possible, scanning for a buck. He was there, but had already spotted me too; about 80yrds away. I put down the camera, lifted the gun and he took off about 40yrds. I was shooting about 120yrds freehand through pretty thick forest. Won't lie, got a little buck fever and missed the first shot. I only had about a 15" window through the trees and branches. I think the shot was just an inch or two above his head, but I was a little more shaky than I would have liked haha. Second shot smoked him in the ear. I know head shots aren't recommended, but his body was behind the timber, and I didn't want to wait for him to run again. He dropped on the spot.

This is only my 3rd buck and definitely the biggest to date. I've learned a lot this year, but definitely had some luck on my side.

I don't post a lot, but I read on here all the time and really appreciate all the vets sharing their knowledge with the new guys like myself.

I'll have to go through the footage, and hopefully I'll do up a video.

I was gonna say "Shit dude! You shot him in the ear!" and then I read the post and sure enough - you shot him in the ear!

Tough call on head shots, right? I know they're not recommended but I know a couple of pretty good hunters who head shoot their deer all the time. I think its a case of "Can you put the bullet where you want it? If so, great. If not? Hit the range and know your limits".

That buck looks both really good and really dead, so I wouldn't sweat that one. Tipped over fast, right?

I practice shooting quite a bit, and I like to think I'm pretty accurate. I practice taking a lean off trees and shooting from a knee, but it's a little bit different aiming at paper vs a big buck. Hopefully next time I can do a little better controlling my nerves haha. But he did tip over real fast!
