OK....here goes.......3 yrs ago ( maybe 4) a freind of mine showed me a place people "used to hunt" yrs back but not anymore due to it being "too grown up"....I saw the largest blacktail foot prints in my life ( I have over 50 blk tails to date)..I guide up north for part of the fall and RACE back to chase deer....actually , RACED back to hunt that spot and a couple others....I can easily say that it can take yrs to finally figure out how to hunt your 'spot'....figure the genetics...maybe get lucky and score !!....
Last fall I 'gave -in' and shot a 115-120ish buck in the area while trying to rop 'Mr. BIG'....week later I blew it on 'Mr.B' in his bed in the morning..then AGAIN the same day 5 hrs later SAME BED !!! ( MORON)...anyway...one week later rattled him in to 8 yrds , measured out ( by Rick Gander) gross score 141 B&C....well....cut his foot off , brought it back there..the print I was after originally dwarfed the 141 bucks foot....so...'06 ended...'07 ITS ON AGAIN !!....last 2 weeks have been spent chasing 2 spots.....went to 'Mr B's spot Sat morn , rattled in a small 3x2 during first hr of light..hiked a bit , hit some lunch , starpped on the pack frame and headed 'UP'---WAYYYY UP !!...crazy assed rubs the whole way...got to the top...slowed down due to knowing the bedding knobs...moss rock , spruce , ect...20 yrds into my 'bedding stalk'...looked through the 6" tree trunks ( small growth on rock/moss)..here he was...broadside at 30 yrds...picked a hole with my 243...one shot to the base of his neck....3 seconds later my knees wobbled !!!!...crazy the adrenaline shot upon 'realisation'....anyway...pictures , shoulder pats ( had a young partner)...cut him up , loaded him , started the hike down !...what do we find???...last yrs shed from a different buck that will go over 150B&C....so...its ON AGAIN !!!!......goingto take Gatehouse in there tomarrow and see what we can rattle up on video !!...hopefully his bro who has the missing 4th tine !!!!......and yes , took pictures of his tail !!...all angles.....coastal mainland blacktail !!.......

THE END......( almost)

Great buck you got yourself there! Whats the outside spread? It must be great to have a honey hole that produces bucks like that! Even though I'm feeling the shits I hope to get to an area that Ive got (pack only) that holds one of those as I found a shed that is around 140 ish 2years ago! Way to go and hope you guys get another!!

Well call me a moron if you want, but if you look in the reg's on pg 5 it's shown in detail a Mule(black-tailed)Deer with 4 points and 3 points.

You do not count the brow tines on these deer, only Whitetail do you count them:roll:

Prove me wrong, but thats what the book states.

Just because the regs say you don't count the brows on a mulie or blacktail for determining a legal animal doesn't change the fact that it still has those points. When you score it for B&C you count those points. The BC hunting synopsis isn't the hunting bible, just laws and rules we have to follow.

Hell some places he's a 9 pointer:confused:

Some would say its a 4x3 with browtines or some will call it a 5x4, do whatever you want.
It would be nice if everyone uses the same terminology but thats not going to happen

I agree that it would be nice If everyone were on the same page, that would be pg 5 lol:biggrin: I believe they count all the points in the USA which would be a 9 pointer

just my 2 cents

.

That's how the BC regs class them, for legal to shoot purpose, but as Brambles says, you count them to score...It's a G1 according to my B&C score sheet:smile:

I agree, call them whatever you want, except it is fun to heckle easterners about inferiority complexes and counting points.

I think there should be a division in the book for island blacktails and mainland blacktails.........that's friken huge for a deer around here!

11-13-2007, 05:01 PM
Just for a quick note , I grew up hunting b-tails on the island and know how they differ from mainland blacky's...it would be deffinitely unheard of to nail one that scores like this on the island.....for the record , I'm not in to the record books at all , have many 'book' sized game under my belt and have none recorded...this buck will not be in any book as well. I have guided many many people from all over the planet for game and have seen many a hunt soured by the 'tape measure'...we as well will NEVER attain 'god status' from a set of antlers !!...but what a hoot HUNTING THEM !!!..
Good luck !!

I believe I know where this buck was taken...just from the vegetation. Of course, I could be quite wrong, but if I'm right I don't think B&C accepts this area as blacktail range. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nevertheless, that's one heck of a buck...and if it's where I think it is, you might have taken him in an area I hunted quite a bit in the last month.

Proguide,

Congrats on a beauty...and I too agree....tape means nothing as some of the more memorable hunts are often those that don't end in monsters.

so..are you saying that mainland blacktails are genetically diferent than Isand blacktails?I did see one rack years OVER 30 ago that came out of Jordan meadows that I initially thought was a mule deer[fantastic buck-few guys will EVER even see one like that in a lifetime.]I'd be interested in this genetic angle though-some areas seem to produce bigger deer-just as other areas produce smaller deer

I would say most certain the mainland blacky's have direct mule deer genetics at least 'somewhere' down the line. As an example of deer 'blood' making it west , I saw and video taped ( gave it to the wildlife biologists) 2 whitetail does here in Pemberton last year...I again saw them while trapping during late winter..and as well saw them in the spring , and one had a fawn with a black tail !!!...there has also been recent whitetail sightings in the Squamish valley !....so....if one were to think the mainland blacktails were of a 'pure strain' I doubt it !!......want to see some rcazy genetics chek out 'blacktailworld.com( I think)..shows b-tails from Wash , Oreg , Calif....some of the bucks look crazy......some most deffinitly mule deer blood..some tiny bodies / 140" racks...ect......I would think the true 'pure strain' would come from islands !!...some freinds of mine have nailed some rather large bucks on the island , including 140's !...not knocking the 'home rock' bucks...

Frazer valley bucks and Pemberton area bucks do have genetics in there blood in them areas for sure ,no one can sit there and tell me that hear is the cut off line for black tail deer and mule deer and the mulie bucks are not going to cross that line and breed with a sitka black tail doe.

Blacktails near "the border" are VERY much interbred with mulies...I see mulie bucks mating blacktail does every fall. Interestingly, it's usually the bucks that bring the genetics west...never seen a definate mulie doe around here. Here's the tail from a buck shot near "the border"
