Hunting today and came across a doe and fawn. The fawn couldn''t have been anymore than a week or two old but wow, late in the season for such a new fawn , trying to load the picture but not having any luck.

Rut timing is actually on a bell curve, most does come into heat during peak rut. However there are atypical does at either end of the curve. Does that are not impregnated on their first estrus will come back into heat roughly 28 days later, and possibly even a third or more heats 56 days later, etc. It’s entirely possible that this doe failed to breed on the first few times around and a lucky buck was still checking for a doe in heat very very very late in the season. Weird things happen in the bush. Or perhaps this particular fawn had a failure to thrive and was very small for its age? Either way yes, a small fawn at this time of year is unusual to say the least. Not great timing for the poor little guy.

I saw a WT doe and two fawns about a month ago. They were both still spotted but decent size. I was surprised.
