Hey everyone hope your hunting seasons are all going well. So I recently got my first moose and am looking to do a euro mount. I've never done one personally so looking to see which method works best before I give it a go. Any suggestions and thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks and happy hunting

Get the deepest widest pot you can find so you can submerge the skull as much as possible and boil that sucker for a good half hour

I've done a pile of em, skin out the head, and just start cutting as much as you can off with a knife. Once you get it down pretty good throw it in a huge pot or bucket on an outdoor propane stove. I like to dump some dish soap and some borax in the water as it helps degrease it. Let it boil on medium for a few hours, not full bore as it weakens the bone. You can pull it out at any time to scrape bits off and put her back in. As the meat cooks it'll curl up and contract and you can basically scrape it off pretty easy. The toughest part is cleaning out the brain cavity. I've actually started taking a fine toothed meat saw to cut the very back of the brain cavity open so you can just scoop it all out with a knife or spoon or something otherwise its really hard to dislodge and remove everything in there. Once you get it all clean go order a big jug of hydrogen peroxide, tape up the antler bases so they dont discolour, and let it soak for a few days. Also something to note in case anyone else hasn't done it and wants to, do it within a couple days of your harvest because the longer you let it sit the grosser it'll get but also the meat and rot will stain the skull and even hydrogen peroxide can't get it white enough.

If you want to keep the thin spiral bones inside the nose then wrap it in a garbage bag and let it rot for a few weeks before boiling. If you don’t want to keep them then just boil and pressure wash it. I cut the bottom off of a 50gal drum for a pot. I live in chilliwack, if you need to borrow a pot….come get it.

I like to keep the bases intact as much as possible, ie tree bark, moss, etc that is usually embedded around the bases, I love that extra character....so after skinning wrap the bases and bottom of beams in saran wrap, hair dry a bit so it tightens up, and then tightly wrap with electrical tape....then finish the process as described above

the maceration method takes a lot longer, but is good if you want to preserve the nasal passages

Rocksteady has beetles that will clean the skull up. Beetles do a great job

For the brain, while its fresh just cut a straight piece of coat hanger about 12' long. Then put a bend in one end about a 1 cm long. The bend should be at a 90 degree angle. Place the straight end into a cordless drill and start blending the brain. It takes a few minutes and constantly be moving the the hanger around different parts of the cranium structure. This will basically liquifies the brain and it will pour out. Tip the skull upside down and stuff will ooze out. You can get a small hook and help it out. Once 95% is out it will basically looks clean, the boiling will take care of the rest.

Once boiling is done all that is left is like a clear like membrane and that peels off the skull surface. This can be grabbed with needle nose plyers.

I recently got my first moose and am looking to do a euro mount.

Was it you I saw around noon today driving Hwy 1 westbound by Abottsford with the moose rack in the back of your truck?

For removing the brain, nothing works better than a pressure washer! But can get messy so wear appropriate clothing...

I recently spoke to a taxidermist ( here in Delta ) about this as I told him I have a nice rack from 3 seasons ago and just did not have time ( built a house ) to pay it some proper attention.
so I enquired about getting the rack mounted on a plaque, and he said you want a Euro mount, or a the bone wrapped in a leather cover.
I said I’ve cut the rack out of the skull and it’s too late for a Euro mount. There is a good chunk of bone between each antler .
he said He could measure the distance in detail between the antler bases and cut the antlers off the bone and order a plastic Euro mount skull and install the antlers on the Plastic skull and done, there is your Euro mount.
The plastic skull was worth ~$250-$300 depending on the size, plus his time to do the work, and your around $600

hope that helps

Thanks for all the kind words. It was my first attempt and I'm glad I was able to do justice to this awesome bull which also happens to be my first so its a great trophy to hang on the wall

If you give it a light coat of mop n glo, it will not collect dust (and be easier to dust). If you put on multiple coats it gives it a sheen..

Nice work.

Wrap the antlers really well especially near the skull, burry the skull just leaving the antlers sticking out, build a wood box to protect the antlers from critters that like to chew on em.
next fall dig em up and pressure wash them off. If after washing down with javex they are not white enough, spray em with white flat enamel.
Shoe polish up the antlers and Bobs yer uncle!

I do not recommend burying, as it tends to be too moist for too long and can make bone crumble..

NEVER use bleach, it eats bone.

I do on average 40 heads a year. I have dealt with the bad decisions other people have made by burying and or bleach. It's terrible..

Boil it for how ever long till the meat starts peeling off, then pressure wash it! Works like a hot damn, but a little messy. All I’ve used for whitening is volume 40 peroxide from shoppers. Soak it all night, wipe off then repeat if needed.

This what I do. Add a little dawn dish soap to the boil. Make sure you pressure wash with mouth closed and wear rain suit. Lol
