View Full Version : Brambles Last Day Buck

Nov 10th Last day for Mulies in parts of Region 4 that I tend to frequent.

My search for a decent muley buck started on Oct 11, I have hunted almost straight through till today ( I get a lot of time off 8)). The weather hasn't cooperated even a little bit, not enough snow to push the big boys down from the mountains.

Passed up a number of smaller 4 points and I did see a buck I would have cut my tag on but his right side antler was broken off at the mainbeam. Big guys seemed not to have shown up this year, a couple have been shot but not as many as previous years.

I was getting a little bummed out and was searching for new "Tag Soup" recipies.

So last night my buddy calls me up, he is new to hunting a couple years ago, he was also with me when I shot my P&Y black bear in the spring. Anyhow, he wants to go hunting, I said sure where do you want to go?
"I don't know" was his answer. So I said that we should go to a spot that I scouted out in October and had seen some does.

I wake up at 3:00 and get ready to pick him up at 4:00.
We drive to the spot with plenty of time before light, HOWEVER its raining buckets and the wind was screaming, for the last day of the season I wanted to hike into a couple spots but I wasn't going to do it in weather like this.

After an hour or so we find ourselves up in the highcountry and its snowing like mad and super foggy, NO fresh tracks on the road so I said to my buddy that something is going to have to cross the road in this beautiful old cutblock. Visibility was crap but we walked the road for hours while doe bleating trying to get something to lay down some tracks.
Well our efforts were useless, nothing showed up.

Well its approaching 11:00, a time in which animals have been really moving lately and a number of bucks have been shot at.

We hopp in the truck and head to some lower cutblocks to get to a vantage point so we could glass and see if something moves during this peak time. As we come around a bend and we spot a deer at the top of a cutblock moving away from us.

Binoculars go up and instantly I see a nice rack, not like the archery instructor, but really nice none the less:mrgreen:
I grab my rifle and take a rest on a nearby tree, 1-2-3-4 BOOM, he was seconds from entering the bush and from what I seen of him he was a shooter. The shot was a perfect uphill quatering away shot that entered low on the ribs and absolutley blew up the heart and busted the offside shoulder, found my TSX next to the skin.

I couldn't be happier with him, when I had pictured what my next buck would look like this was it.
He was fairly young buck good teeth and a real scrapper or he was attacked by a lion when he was younger. Nasty scar on his back, NO TAIL and about 2 inches from the end of one of his ears is missing.

Pics to follow
Hope you enjoy

The snow we were hunting was at 5600 - 6200 ft and this buck was shot at 5200 ft

A couple people have asked this question, the answer is Yes, I have taped him.

I'll just say that this is definitly one of those bucks that looks WAY bigger than its score would otherwise dictate.

At first I was disappointed with the score but afterwards I thought, screw the score, he looks the way I wanted my buck to look, he is a fantastic looking buck and I'm still very very happy with him regardless of the "score"

Heading to Kamloops area on Wednesday for 4 days or so of hunting and a little family visiting (but that can be done in the evenings), so it will be interesting to see what lady luck has in store for me, hopefully a little snow so I can at least track a bit

Right on Brambles - great last day buck!!! Congrats hombre. Awesome season for ya!

I didn't pull the pin on a muley this year. I saw ~ 12 bucks up to ~160, but not what I was looking for with a full freezer... The whitey vermin might still be in trouble though...

Thanks Steep, good luck on the Whitetails, after my kamloops trip I have to start back to work again, (they might have to re-train me cause I've been off so long:lol: ) but I'm going to try and take one of them whitetail things with a bow.

Well the saying "Its going to happen when you least expect it" is totally true, I hunted hard for a long time and almost everyday I was absolulty sure that a big buck was going to walk out at any time. On the day I shot the buck I thought the last thing that was going to happen was see a shooter buck, I figured I had a better chance of finding Jimmy Hoffa first, in fact when we seen the deer I first expected to see a doe, but the binoculars reveiled a different and much more exciting alternative:smile:
