Hello Everyone,

I’ve been dreaming a lot recently about someday going for stone sheep and mountain caribou hunts. From what I’ve seen online these hunts are mostly fly-in or horse access. I’m curious, does anyone do hike in access hunts for these species? Not looking for anyone’s areas or access points. I’m just wondering if it can be done. Stories and pics are always appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Jimmy

Yes it can definitely be done. The majority of stone sheep hunts are hike in off the highway.

Hike in for either is very doable, caribou might be a bit heavy on the hike out though...Lots of spots on the Alaska Highway for sheep from what I gather. The biggest caribou I ever saw in BC was off the highway at Gnat pass.

Lots of drainage s hold sheep.
4,8, 10 mile creeks, McDonald, Duniden, Nonda, etcetc. Wokpash
Find the harvest charts through Bios.....
Vavoom.
Work your arse off for two weeks....... Learn lots come back 2022,2023, 2024.......until you finally tag a big Ram.

Or you might get lucky right away.

Sounds easy , it's not ! Good luck

And the same theory works for almost any game you are after…minus the harvest chart part…

Have done one caribou hunt and was back in 1999 . . . we hiked off the highway and cut a tag. Doing a fly-in this year.
Lots of solid sheep spots off the highway but some get rather plugged up for the opener. My first ram was a hike in and it took 6 trips to connect. First one always seems the hardest at least if your starting from scratch.

Join WSSBC to meet people and learn sheep. Search here for threads on locations. There is a pretty good thread with a bunch of hike in locations.
