View Full Version : Deer are supposed to have two antlers

went out hunting this morning and right away was into some deer, but they were a bit alarmed as they had heard me sneak in (rained all day yesterday and most of the night, then temp dropped to freezing). Had a small 2pt bedded 100 yards in front of me, which had enough of my noise and bounded off, taking about twelve does and a decent sized buck with him, across the field they went and most of the deer filtered into the timber @ 350 yards.

I glassed the bigger buck as he thrashed a bush. It was still pretty early, and a bit foggy - tough to see well. Looked like the buck only had one antler, but he was in the willows and it was tough to see. I ended up stalking 100 yards closer, and he followed some does back out into the field, and I could tell for sure he was busted off on his right side. And he was only a 3 pointer, and on his broken side he was snapped off around 2 inches above his skull.

I managed to stalk within 200 yards of him and some does. The buck was trying to herd up the 2 does, but when I blew my fawn distress call, they came running and he had no choice but to follow. THey eventually got to within 50 yards, I managed to get some ok pics through my binocs

If he had the other antler I am pretty damn sure I'd be skinning deer right now

he had a huge body

Good pictures. Looks like he would have been a decent deer - nice long tines. Still lots of fun getting close.

Def. long brows for a mulie.

Theres a whiletail ive seen - 6 point - that only has one antler.
Other is broken at the brown tine. I would assume from fighting hard, but ive also been told they get busted while in velvet (from a fall, hit by a car, etc)

That buck has a wicked brow tine.

I let one go like that once...his antlered side was backdropped by a tree, while the non-antlered side was against the snow. Although I thought I could see an antler, the side against the snow looked definitive that it was a doe. So, I let him run away, which is when I saw the 4 point antler clearly! That was back in the Tasco days.

Oh well, I dumped a 160" the next day, so I'm glad I let him go...

Funny you posted this TB, a couple days ago I had to pass up a 170" typical mulie because of the same problem, he was broken off and had the brow and about 5" of mainbeam. I would have dumped him otherwise

So if he only has half a set of headgear does that mean you only need to partially cut a tag???:wink:

Nice looking buck...Nothing wrong with taking a unique one like that Bartell...He may not score well but definitely unique...Not being familiar with regs in your part of the province, is it a 4 point only season??

Seen a whitetail on monday that only had one antler. Figured he broke it so he wouldn't get shot.

I don't know I've never tried them but I imagine horns taste like
crap anyway..:p I shot one a few years back that was the same way.

Funny thing is it always seem to be the right horn, would that make them left or right hoofed:smile:
