OK, so this season I was visiting family and one day I decided to go out hunting deer. I started hiking about an hour before light and as soon as the sun started to show so did the wind. As the day progressed so did the wind. It was even difficult glass with the binoculars let alone the spotter. I figured I was not going to see anything but I was wrong. Right from about 8 am I was seeing doe almost everywhere but no bucks till just before 10. Finally almost 1 k away I see one buck but even in the wind I could see a rack at 900 yards. OK so I begin my hike to him, I get there and crap, I cannot find him seeing doe's all over but no bucks let alone the one I seen. So I hunt my way back towards the truck as it is getting that time. When I return to the spot where I first spotted the buck I figure what the hell, turn around and look where I first seen the buck. HOLY CRAP, 4 bucks. I was confused but excited. So I headed back. When I know I am getting close but still no sight of them yet, I belly crawl slowly for about 60 yards or so. I peek through the grass and about 200 yards away, at least a 5X5 with stickers on both sides. So I found where I missed the bucks the first time, just a little bit of a roll in the lay of the land where they were standing and I totally missed them. I keep the move in to see where the others are and there they are, two three points, one 4 point, one possible 5 point and the buck with the stickers. Oh yah, and there was one doe.
So here is where the wind comes in. Still very very windy, I sit for about 20 minutes watching all the deer. Finally I take rest and put my sights on the biggest buck that is now over 200 away. I have What I figure was about a 70 k cross wind. I aim upwind maybe a couple inches, take my shot and nothing, no deer even acknowledged my shot. OK, shot two, same thing. Not wanting to throw out a good opportunity on the closer bucks I take a shot at the possible 5 point(150 yards) miss again. Now I aim waaay up wind, drops like a sack of bricks.
Unfortunately this was the ONLY time I have gone hunting without my camera and did not get any field pics. Sorry folks.

After all this I took my rifle to the range to make sure it was sighted in still. 150 yards, 6 shots all under a toony.

Nice buck!! That wind can be a bugger hey? Need a wind speed measuring device, chart and ballistic tables like snipers!? At least the end result for you was still a positive one - good work!

The other buck was huge on mass, had a bit of a mess at the base and he had what looked like matching stickers I think between G3 and G4.
Yah steve, I think I will have to take shooting lessons so I can actually hit the deer the first time LOL. But you will have to come up to PG to help empty the beer fridge afterwards.

What Cartridge were you shooting ?

Takes an awfully strong wind to cause a miss on a deer sized critter at less then 200 yards with most High powered centrefires........

Congrats on the Great Buck !

That happenned to me with my rocky..........320 yds across a canyon. Luckily my buddy was on the spotter calling the shots for me. There was no wind where we were sitting as it was sheltered but after the first two shots my buddy looked out into the canyon and could see trees blowing around pretty good. Most liekly a good 30-40 kph crosswind..... Bullets were blowing a good 2 1/2'. 130gn ballistic tip out of a .270

Congrats on a nice buck! Way to adapt.

Got me reading -
for .308 with a B.C. of .400 travelling at ~2600 fps @muzzle
drift will be ~1" @ 100 y., ~4" @200y., ~9"@300 for each 10 mph of cross wind.
So, 40mph @ 200 =~ 16 inches. 50 mph @300y. = ~45".

for .270 with a B.C. of .450 travelling at ~3000 fps muzzle
drift will be ~2.5" @ 200 y., ~6.5" @300 y., ~20"@500 y., per 10 mph crosswind.
So, 30" @ 320 y. would indicate about 40 mph wind.
