Saw a thread on CGN about this topic and thought it might be interesting.

What's your ammo load for hunting? :)

How many rounds do you have for the hunting season?

How many do you carry on your person?

Do you have some extra in a truck or saddlebag?

Usually two boxes. I’ve seen a few guys drop their rifles and not have enough ammo to sight them back in.

While hunting I carry enough for a loaded magazine and 10 more on my belt carrier for my carried rifle. When out with a .22 I take a full box and whatever in a partial box, when the partial box is consumed I take another full box to go with the one I had left. In my field ammo box there is always a few more cartridge boxes full of rounds as well.

Backpack hunting-6 or less, 3 for shooting an animal, 3 for potential problems on the way home(2 full mags)

Any other time-3 in the mag and whatever is on my hip holster, maybe 6 more.

Extended trips out of province- usually an extra box or so in the truck.

My favourite load and the one I carry most often is Barnes TTSX 168gr. Pretty much can only hunt weekends and would carry more ammo for a 7-10 backcountry trip, but usually have 3 in magazine (1 in the chamber if still hunting solo and I know there's an animal nearby); 6 in the buttstock pouch (lots of predators in most areas I hunt). Always have an extra box in the truck and a box of cheap stuff for target practice before heading home

I carry a full box in my rifle case, then 8 in my hunting ruck sack, in addition to the rounds in my clip...

A full 20 round box back at camp and 10 rounds on me. So I guess 30 rounds......

2 mags of 4 each with me, extra mag and @ 10 in the truck.
Probably have 100 rounds overall but Son In Law and I both shoot 30-06 and I share a few with him.
We've had a long tradition in our Family that Son and Son In Law get a box of whatever they are shooting in their Xmas stockings.

while in the bush, usually 12.

4 in the rifle, another 4 on the buttstock( depending where I'm hunting). And I have 4 that stay in my survival kit.

A guy in Peace River Ab came across a pack of wolves eating 2 deer on a hillside across from him. There was 15 wolves. Since then I have always had at least 15 rounds on my person for the rifle I carried. Minimum 25 rounds if carrying a shotgun.

9 on the stock holder, 1 in each pants pocket and the rest back at camp. I usually bring 40 rnds for each pea shooter I take. If it’s my Tikka, 2 full mags, 1 bullet in each pocket. The 444 gets 5 in the mag tube, and 1 in each pocket! But I always bring 40 rnds! Moosin

2 full mags, 1 in the rifle and the other in my pack or pocket if I carry the xbolt.
if i take the no1, one in the chamber, a couple in my pocket, and 5 in a sleeve in my pack.
I almost always have a box or 2 in the truck as well

10 in an ammo wallet on my belt plus whatever the rifle holds (3 or 5), so total of 13 to 15.

If I have my...
.22, then it's 2 full mags and at least one box of 50.
.30-30, enough to fill the tube, at few on the buttstock, and a full box of 20.
.308, 2 full mags, and a full box of 20.
12 gauge, full tube and an ammo belt with a mix of slugs and 00 Buckshot.

I have an extra box of 20 hunting rounds, some birdshot, and a .22 brick in the truck and quad.

I don't do much hike in hunting (overnight +) anymore, but when I did, I always carried another extra 5 rounds (in a ziplock bag) of whatever caliber I was packing. Don't remember exactly why I decided on 5 rounds, but it just became a habit. 3 for signaling, 1 to shoot my partner in the leg so I could outrun the bear, and 1 for me if that didn't work out maybe??? :-) :-) (just kidding of course!)

I usually have about 60 of each load for each rifle and at least 100 rounds of 12 gauge in my ammo cabinet. Always shoot TTSX or TSX.

I like to have a dozen perfect arrows each for my compound and stick bows plus a bunch of practice arrows.

10-20 depending on species and type of hunt. Extra in truck or at camp if out for multiple days.

Since .30-30 is my primary deer caliber, and most Federal cartridge
s for that caliber come in two 10 round plastic sleeves, I load the 7 rounds into the carbine, put the extra 3 from the one sleeve in pockets and bino pouch, and the other 10 sleeve goes in top pocket of my pack. I’m over 50 now, and the extra weight is good for my calorie burning regimen.

When I’m on a multi day trip, I carry plenty of extra. If it’s a backpack hunt, one extra box will go to base camp. If in my camper, then I’ll have multiple calibers along, with multiple boxes for each. Better to have and not need, than need and not have!

Being that I'm superstitious I

1) hunt with a new rifle every year and

2) always carry 7 rounds in both front pockets :)

At least a box.
Might need to re-zero after a fall.

my two main rifles are 30-06...in my survival kit I have 10 shells at all times...gives me 3 chances to signal distress + 1 spare.. they are in a styrofoam holder shortened and held together with a bit of tape to prevent clinks and rattles. I keep 5 shells in my rifle or in my front pocket when unloaded (hinged floor plate ). I have another 5 in the fingers of a mini glove in my other front pocket as spares (if I have clothes on I should be carrying 10 ). I also keep another 10 secure in my day bag....I usually take 3 boxes with me hunting - a box of 150' gr, 165 gr and a box of 180's...rifles are mostly useless without ammo..heheheh

Ammo is the cheapest part of the hunt. I carry 25 with me in case of emergency and about 100 in the truck. Can always use it at the range later. I have hunted with a person that thought 3 was enough and spent a lot of time looking for his wounded deer. I have learned to be more selective in who I hunt with since then.

I usually have around 9 rounds on me between in the rifle and in my pack for a day hunt. On a multi day hunt away from home I'll have a spare rifle w/ 20 rounds ammo for it in addition to my main rifle w/ 9 rounds ammo

Going into season I have a couple dozen loads ready for each rifle

On a fly in hunt; 13 on me in various locations. 10 back at the lake. It may seem like a lot but sometimes things can get out of control before you know it. A single bullet can be worth more than your tent when your 2 days hike away from the lake you flew into on your “once in a lifetime” hunt.

on my fly in sheep hunts I take 19. 3 always in the mag, 6 on my buttstock and 2 plastic 5 shell holders in my backpack.

10 rounds for a day hunt. 20 rounds for a spare rifle and 20 for my hunting rifle for a trip. Usually have 40 loaded up for any rifle I may use during the season.

For hunting with my 7mm: 3 in the mag with 1 in the chamber, 2 in each pants pocket, 2 in each coat pocket, 8 on my pack belt which gives me 20 on my person. 1 box in the truck, 1 box in camp. 60 rounds total.

At home there's a few hundred rounds loaded up for the 7mm alone. I shoot 300 - 400 rounds per year with my hunting rifle.

Since I take a shotgun everywhere in the bush I have a box in the truck that contains: 20 birdshot, 10 00 buckshot, 10 Federal Deep Penetrator slugs and 10 comet flares.

I have a few thousand rounds stocked up for all my calibers combined. Buy it cheap, stack it deep.

Without getting into shotgun rounds for birds and road hunting...

- 30-06 150gr

- I have enough rounds for several hunting seasons. On average, I use less than 10 per season between checking the scope and taking game. I would only shoot more if I had to re-sight.

- I try to keep the magazine full (4 rounds) and I have an ammo pouch in my backpack which can have anywhere from 1 to 20 depending on when I last replenished and how many I decided to put in.

- No extras in the truck unless for whatever reason I decided to leave my pack behind.

What's your ammo load for hunting? Depending on what rifle I'm packing which depends on what ammo I have on hand

How many rounds do you have for the hunting season? Between 20 and 100

How many do you carry on your person? whatever the rifle fits (usually 3) plus 9ish or so in my bino harness

Do you have some extra in a truck or saddlebag? usually whatever is left of the current box.

Since i reload and have a whole whack of dies , i have a full factory plastic ammo sleeve of several different types of ammo in camp for the "have not enoughs" . Myself; day hunt....several in the pack, 4 in my pocket in a neoprene holder and a rifle full if walking plus a box in the truck.

When I was younger I always carried an extra pocket full of ammo. But, I have learned I that I always carry it - and never shoot it.

Now, with a high powered rifle I just carry what's in the mag. 4 rounds or so. If I miss that many times I'll be headed back to the truck in shame anyway. Extra ammo wouldn't make a difference.

Birding - at least 10 rounds on me. It really depends on the kind of hunting. But, in general I need more for more misses. :-)

Banging around with a 22. Just a few in my pocket.

I usually have 50-100 rounds loaded for each of my hunting rifles at any given time.

On a day hunt I will have the magazine contents (3-5 rounds) and a spare magazine or a ammo wallet with about 10 rounds for the hinged floorplate rifles.

The truck will usually have 50 or so rounds of ammo for every firearm I might use during the hunt.

If I’m hunting with the short mag, its two mags full for 8 rounds, 2 on the stock holder for 10 to walk around with, and anytime i`m more then a few hours from home i take that and have 2 full boxes in my truck… usually have a 20 ga for grouse, so add another box for that, 22 is another beast generally if i take one with me, i have 500 rounds in the truck and grab a handful if I’m taking it for a walk

On my day trips I carry 5 cartridges with me.

at home I have about 50 cartridges give or take of what I shoot for hunting ammo for my shotgun. I have about 20 rounds for my centerfire rifles and the compnents necessary to make much more if necessary. Lastly, lots of pellets on hand to plink with.
