Thought I would share a story with everyone . My son and I were hunting the open moose season in region 6 . Day two and we were canoeing down our favorite slough when we spotted what we thought was a dead swan floating as we had seen a sick one the day before . Upon closer inspection we saw that it was a moose gut bag floating , we had heard two shots opening day . We were both aware that they may be a bear in the area and continued on down the slough after passing close by the bag. Within 10 seconds I heard my son say Holy Sh**t and as I looked up we came face to face with a dark brown grizzly maybe 20 feet away in the razor grass, we were only 5 or so feet from shore in 6 inces of water. He was standing up and all we could see was ears , eyes and a head . We quickly made for deeper water as he dropped down and covered the final 30-40 feet to the edge where the gut bag was floating . His first visit to it for sure as there no bite marks and it was still floating off shore . We stopped up and took these pictures plus a video that I will try to post after these pics . Continuing on we were pretty pumped and wondered if he would still be there when would be coming back at the end of the day .
Six hours later we were still hoping he would be gone but there he was 400 yards up the slough laying on his side . It was amazing that he winded us that far away instantly and never took his eyes off of us . You can see that he has eaten or dragged the gut bag away and was standing on the partial leg of the moose . As we had to paddle right by him within 50 feet I had my 45/70 loaded with 300 grains and my son had his 30:06 on safety . The only thing he did that had us thinking Oh no here it comes was getting off his side , coming to the waters edge and glaring us down . No sound at all from him and as little eye contact from us as possible . He dropped down grabbed his moose leg and took off when we had passed him . We did not get a moose this year but that experience kept us both jacked up for the whole time . Before anyone says what the hell did you go past him again for , we had no alternative other than a long slog thru some unknown country and then a long walk . No shots fired so things worked out well for both parties .
